Sallinger threatens to expose Trish, giving Jess a tough decision to make, and Hogarth's increased anti-powered actions alienate Malcolm further.
Jessica determines Sallinger is unconscious and urges Trish to leave, but her sister wants to finish him, as although the cops didn't see her face, he did. Knowing this will make her the bad guy, Jess knocks her out and leaves with her as police arrive.
She takes Trish to a hotel, where she cleans her up as it finally settles in that Dorothy is dead. Jess admits her own mom would've been proud of the heroes they've become, while Dorothy is the reason Trish is the way she is. Jess tells Trish they have to make decisions, as this will be looked at as just attempted murder, wanting to get her out of town. She finally answers Costa, who offers his condolences and police protection to Trish following Dorothy's murder, and tells them about Sallinger. The killer has already told them it was the masked vigilante, who clawed off half his face, and he is now under protective watch as well. Costa says Trish could ruin their case with the body, and can't promise any kind of protection if Jess brings her in, directing her to a news channel. Hogarth is holding another press conference, revealing Trish has attacked others and offering a $250,000 reward to anyone who can help unmask her. They realize they have to get Trish out of the city for sure, especially when an unknown number sends Jess a clear photo of Trish attacking Sallinger. Jess begs Trish to just stay in the room until she can get some answers. Malcolm questions Hogarth's methods, bringing up Dorothy's murder, but she replies that the system will handle that while they focus on what it can't: Trish. She orders him to unmask her himself so they don't have to pay the reward. He gets a call from Jess, who argues that Trish's actions make sense given Dorothy's death, and he agrees to bring her supplies.
Dressed in a nurse scrub, Jess gets in an elevator alone with Sallinger, but he doesn't believe she'll finish what Trish started, as she's afraid of losing her.
He doesn't want to go to prison, so he demands that she destroy any evidence from Silva's body, otherwise the photo of Trish will automatically get leaked. With no options since Trish would end up at the Raft, he adds that she has to trust that he'll keep his word, but she says she'll destroy him if anything happens to Trish. Returning home, Jess requests that Gillian look into things and asks that she answer the phone, but realizes Gillian is quitting because of the job's strange nature. Jess appeals to her humanity, and after Gillian offers condolences for Dorothy, Erik shows up and Gillian agrees to stay. Erik says he got Brianna home and safe, then saw the news, but Jess pushes past condolences and lets him in as Gillian deals with callers. Erik feels responsible, since he wouldn't sacrifice himself to put Sallinger away, but realizes Jess' desire to hide Trish permanently would be difficult. She doesn't want Trish to go down to save Sallinger, and Erik says he can get her into the crime lab by requesting a favor. Meanwhile, Laurent Lyonne visits Hogarth, believing she wants to change after seeing her press meet, asks if she's good at her job. He reveals his mom is doing poorly after two deaths, and is too proud to come to her, but the people Peter embezzled from are after them. Though most will likely back off, their lawyer seems useless against the one who won't, so he wants Hogarth, asking that she not hurt his mom again.
Erik takes Jessica to Officer Carl Nussbaumer (Kevin Mitchell), whom he blackmailed after discovering he'd been killing drug dealers to take their profits.
She tells him to stay hidden and approaches Nussbaumer, who realizes she's with his blackmailer and turns off his bodycam, saying he's square with her "boss." She threatens to expose him if he doesn't get her into the lab, so he counters that his badge allows him to beat her. Erik steps in, snarling that they're not square, and though he agrees after she calls Erik off, he says Erik showing his face was dumb. Jess chastises Erik for showing himself, but he reveals guilt and rage toward Nussbaumer, having realized the man has gotten worse and he could've stopped him. Malcolm brings Trish a change of clothes and urges her to not blame herself, but she knows this, feeling bitter that she lost while everything was on her side. Malcolm tells her the bad guys don't always win, and she admits she doesn't think she could keep the heroics up, which he says is good before leaving. Hogarth goes to Kith to admit she did what she thought she had to because she loves her, but Kith snaps that her actions are always self-serving, not loving. Hogarth opens up about their past, explaining she cheated because she wasn't ready to love, but followed Kith over the years knowing she would be one day. Kith tries to drown her out with a piano, then drums, but shoves a stand when Hogarth admits to investigating Peter and discovering his embezzlement. She responds that truth is overrated, then leaves after Hogarth reveals Laurent came to her, afraid of what will happen. While Hogarth's words have an effect on Kith, Jessica makes her final decision on Sallinger's deal, Trish gets antsy, and Malcolm takes his job back into his own hands.
It's certainly beginning to feel like at least a few of the characters in this show are trying their hardest to make me hate them.
Of course, it's fair for Jessica to point out that Trish's rage and actions make sense because she lost her mind, but she still should've kept her head. The main reason to be against how Trish acted is actually the fact that it works against the particular kind of hero she's trying to be. By going after Sallinger, Trish has made herself, and by extension Jessica, even bigger targets, because he and Hogarth can continue making him seem innocent. Trish has an issue with vanity, and since becoming a hero has constantly thirsted for the people's attention, and now she's got it more negatively than before. For someone like Frank Castle, people's thoughts and opinions on his actions couldn't matter less. For Trish, they're an important part of what she's doing. Trish wants to feel like she's making a difference, and while this is an admirable goal, she's too obsessed with requiring that people know what she's doing. Jessica also frustrates me this episode because she is so desperately against letting the picture get leaked so Sallinger will go down. It's a similar kind of situation to when Erik had to make his choice, but the stakes really aren't as high and Jessica is making the choice for Trish. They all know Trish is more than willing to take the fall, like she said she would when Erik needed to, and the result would be she either goes to the Raft (obviously not a good choice) or going on the run. For Erik, the choice was either continue living and not get Sallinger, but with hope to get him in the future, or put Sallinger away for a short time and likely die in prison. For Trish, I don't see her going quietly to the Raft, and a hidden life where no one knows her is what she's been trying for since the start of this season. What it comes down to, however, is the lack of choice, because Jess left Erik's position up to him, but she's not even giving Trish her options. More than them, however, was my increased irritation for Hogarth, who has gone full-steam ahead with her anti-powered garbage. Kith really hits the nail on the head this episode in saying Hogarth doesn't truly love her, but wants to possess her and manipulates people to her needs. It's really creepy listening to Hogarth declare her "love" for Kith, when it's really just a major case of stalking, since she watched her since school. She seems to think this is going to win Kith over, but if someone told me they were so infatuated they watched me for years, keeping track of where I lived and worked, I would be getting away from them ASAP and calling the cops. Also bad for Hogarth is how she admits to digging into Peter's past and causing his suicide, which I don't think is likely to win Kith over. The one way I'd say I'm glad for what Hogarth is doing now is that Malcolm is finally snapping back to his senses, certain they're helping a serial killer. He makes a bold enough move this episode by helping Trish, but he actually takes it a step further later on that shows he still has integrity and morals. Sallinger continues to impress as a villain, of course, having set up a camera expecting Jessica to beat him after Dorothy's murder, only to catch Trish. This really works better for him, because he has ruined any chance at a reputation for Trish, has proof it's her, and by extension of getting her as put Jess in a bind. If it had been Jess who attacked him, the only way I could see him playing the situation beyond getting her in trouble is that people could think any evidence on Silva's body was something she planted there. By snaring Trish, he is able to catch Jess as well and order her to destroy the evidence, so she is left with a ruined reputation and no way to send him to prison. However, we see that Trish, like Costa said, clawed half his face off, which I feel won't be good for his already warped mind. We've already seen what a damaged face does to a person after Frank Castle mangled Billy Russo's, so how about Sallinger? Speaking of Costa, he is once again one of the people I feel worst for, especially because he's just trying so hard to do the right thing the way he can. Every time he thinks he has a lead, it comes from Jessica, which makes the higher-ups suspicious, and there is always something that ruins what they've got. The case is dragging on, and spending too much time digging into Sallinger without getting results can't be good. Now we come to the worst thing to happen to the group lately: Sallinger murdering Dorothy, which is of course what sent Trish over the edge. I'm honestly not entirely sure how I feel about Dorothy even now, because we know how she's treated Jessica and she prostituted her own daughter. I do think Dorothy was trying to become a better person now, and really just continued to deal with some of her old habits like focusing on Trish's fame. At the same time, however, I just rolled my eyes when Gillian described her as a "force," because often times this "force" was just being mean and manipulative. Regardless of mixed feelings about her, Dorothy cared about her daughter and I don't think she deserved death, and Rebecca De Mornay played her excellently. Trish is going off the deep end, and now Jess and Malcolm will both have to deal with the consequences of choices they've made.
