Adidas has created shoes through 3-D printing and plans to continue the new method, according to an article from Quartz Media.
The shoe, called the Futurecraft 4D, is the first made for Adidas using this process, which allows the company to quickly create new shoes and test them, then decide if they are going to sell or not. Five thousand pairs are expected to be released by the end of the year, and that production will be increased through 2021. Naturally the shoes will be expensive as they are first sold, but with time they will become more affordable. Adidas vice president of technology innovation Gerd Manz said the process is a big step forward because what usually takes a month can be achieved in two hours, according to the article. The final goal using this knowledge is that customers will be able to enter a store and have a customized shoe made for them. To me, this sounds like an incredible step forward and reminds me of "Back to the Future." There, Marty McFly got self-lacing shoes, which Nike did start work on last year, and this sounds like a step forward in innovating the shoe making and buying processes.

South Africa's president Jacob Zuma is in hot water after he fired a well-liked finance minister, causing problems for the economy, according to a BBC article.
Protests broke out after Zuma fired Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan, which angered both supporters and opponents of Zuma. Despite this, a group has come out to support and defend Zuma, with one saying a forced regime change would be wrong and make current South Africa similar to the days of Apartheid. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets as one group of protesters marched, according to the article. Protesters are demanding that Zuma resign from the presidency. Zuma's supporters believe he will be causing a major socio-economic change, so if he does, there is a chance things could calm down. People would likely still be angry about the firing, but if the economy improves, there will be something to be happy about. If not, Zuma's supporters might join the opposition and eventually succeed in removing him from office. To me, it appears that Zuma made a reckless decision and is facing a backlash that should have been expected. Firing someone who so many people like is already a problem, and causing issues for the economy can be catastrophic for citizens. Scientists have discovered an atmosphere surrounding an Earth-like planet, according to a BBC article.
The planet, designated GJ 1132b, was first announced in 2015 and is 39 light-years away. At 370 degrees Celsius, or 698 degrees Fahrenheit, the planet is far too hot to sustain human life, and its atmosphere is comprised of either water, methane, or both. Despite there being no chance humans could survive on the planet, scientists said there is now a better chance at finding other planets with atmospheres that could be housing lifeforms. With this discovery having been made, fans of space and space travel are surely excited about the news. Even though this planet can't house life, perhaps others could, and in that case we would really have a breakthrough situation. Astronomer Marek Kukula said that this means technology should be able to detect more planets in the not-too-distant future, according to the article. I personally have never loved space as much as some do, but I find the situation interesting and like a technological step forward. Whether there is life outside Earth or not is an age-old question, and it would be incredible to find another planet that is hosting life. We also clearly must have at least better understanding than we did even months ago if scientists are able to learn so much about a planet without even going to it. President Donald Trump announced April 6, 2017 that he ordered a missile strike on Syria in retaliation for the recent chemical bombing, according to a CNN article.
Many believe the Syrian president is to blame for the situation, though he and Syrian ally Russia have said this is not true. Some people said Trumo made a good decision, but suggested he be careful to not start an open war with Syria. For those who support Trump, it feels like he took matters into his own hands and made a quick decision. Critics have said it was a rash move, with some referencing a tweet Trump made when Barack Obama was in office, urging the former president to not get mixed up with Syria. Good or bad, the world is in a delicate place at the moment. Along with internal struggles in America, quick decisions that affect other countries, especially a powerhouse like Russia, could have horrible consequences. America and Russia of course have a history with the Cold War, and if things don't go properly we could return to a situation like this or end up in another actual war. At the same time, with Congress aware of what happened, Trump may have to interact more with other facets of government before making more decisions like this. Comedian and actor Don Rickles died April 6, 2017 from kidney failure, according to the New York Times. I remember seeing a picture of him seemingly at random on Facebook and thought nothing of it. Later on, it was trending and people were posting all over the place. Rickles was known, of course, for his brash comedy style in which he would insult anyone and everyone. No one was safe from his humor, whether they be black, Asian, a celebrity or just a random person in his crowd. According to the New York Times article, a major favorite of Rickles' was singer Frank Sinatra. Rickles even joked about his wife, who he said could signal ships with her jewelry, and his mother, who he called "the Jewish Patton." Despite his insulting comedy, Rickles was beloved by many and no one took his jokes to heart. I remember growing up with him as the second Mr. Wilson in the "Dennis the Menace" movies, as well as Mr. Potato Head from the "Toy Story" franchise. Both kids and adults will feel the sting of this death, but he is immortalized in the films and comedy specials he made, and will not be forgotten. |
