Adidas has created shoes through 3-D printing and plans to continue the new method, according to an article from Quartz Media.
The shoe, called the Futurecraft 4D, is the first made for Adidas using this process, which allows the company to quickly create new shoes and test them, then decide if they are going to sell or not. Five thousand pairs are expected to be released by the end of the year, and that production will be increased through 2021. Naturally the shoes will be expensive as they are first sold, but with time they will become more affordable. Adidas vice president of technology innovation Gerd Manz said the process is a big step forward because what usually takes a month can be achieved in two hours, according to the article. The final goal using this knowledge is that customers will be able to enter a store and have a customized shoe made for them. To me, this sounds like an incredible step forward and reminds me of "Back to the Future." There, Marty McFly got self-lacing shoes, which Nike did start work on last year, and this sounds like a step forward in innovating the shoe making and buying processes.
