Glimmer plans to seek out Princess Mermista with the help of the boisterous Captain Sea Hawk to control sea routes, but Shadow Weaver's spies are always listening.
As Angella is looking for ways to build defense, Glimmer suggests she and the others be allowed to recruit more princesses on a diplomatic mission.
She proposes that, as anyone coming to Bright Moon by sea must pass through the Salineas Sea Gate, they could reach out to its ruler, Princess Mermista (Vella Lovell). Angella is reluctant, but agrees after Glimmer, with help from the others, notes they can succeed with just a boat, an experienced captain, and She-Ra. She demands there be no violence or collateral damage. They go to a tavern in Seaworthy where the bartender directs them to Sea Hawk (Jordan Fisher), who boasts of massive accomplishments. He takes control of the hiring and reveals he is costly, and when they turn to leave, claims no one knows the way to Salineas better, as he knows Mermista personally. Remembering how they first saw him, Adora challenges the sailor to an arm wrestling match; they leave if he wins, but he helps them if she does. Despite his boasting, she wins, though he says he let her and wanted to go to Salineas anyway. A shadow figure nearby disappears, giving this info to Shadow Weaver, who states that Catra has another chance to retrieve Adora, shrugging off Catra's point that Hordak told her to give up on the girl. To Catra's annoyance, she's travelling with fellow Force Captain Scorpia (Lauren Ash), who gets overly friendly, and she becomes sick and frustrated on the boat ride over.
Meanwhile, Adora are aboard Hawk's ship "The Dragon's Daughter III," named so because he apparently set the previous two ablaze.
While Adora and Glimmer are unimpressed, the captain says he expects them all to help out on the ship, and is caught off-guard when Bow ties the sail down properly. He continues playing cool, but Glimmer's powers and Adora doing good work as well frustrate him, wondering for a moment why they even need him. His bravado returns as Glimmer looks at the map, and he sings about how great he is. Adora beats Hawk multiple times arm wrestling as Glimmer realizes they're off-course, noticing shipwrecks nearby, and a sea serpent suddenly slams the ship. Hawk reveals he took them here on purpose to give them adventure, and he gets a shock when Adora becomes She-Ra and charges the creature. Disgusted that Hawk was showing off, Glimmer rants that he's wasted enough of their time and demands he finish the trip, telling Adora to return to the boat. Over on the Horde ship, Catra is surprised to learn about the Sea Gate in their path, and more shocked when Scorpia says it's learned about in "Force Captain Orientation." She orders that they find a way through the gate.
Adora and the others are confused to find Salineas empty, but a guard arrives, demanding to know why they're there. Glimmer tries to explain the mission, but Hawk interjects that his name should be mentioned to Mermista.
As it turns out, the apathetic princess is disgusted to see him, and while she knows about the old princess alliance, her dad told her it was a disaster. Mermista has her guard fetch refreshments as Sea Hawk flirts with her, and she reveals everyone abandoned Salineas when the gate started to crumble. She shrugs that she can handle it but that the Horde is annoying, and while she doesn't know the cause of the gate's collapse, it gets weaker daily. Scoffing at Glimmer's suggestion to reform the alliance, Mermista asks what Bright Moon has done for them, and stops Sea Hawk by revealing their rocky past. Adora notices First Ones writing on the wall and discovers the gate is likely losing its connection to its power source, the Salinean Runestone. Mermista agrees to join if the gate is fixed, but demands that Sea Hawk leave, so Bow directs the disappointed sailor back to the boat. While Adora is busy recharging the boat, Glimmer tries to cheer up Sea Hawk just as the Horde arrives, but the growing rebellion is ready to fight.
Honestly as I was watching this episode, I was giving thought to how I should understand sometimes to give up on certain shows after a while, even if I want to have a full opinion on one.
As this one went on, however, I was so glad I decided to stick with the series, as this was probably the episode I've had the most fun with so far. Sea Hawk perfectly contrasts how the group has most been thus far, as they have lighthearted moments but try to be serious in Horde situations. Sea Hawk, on the other hand, is full of vigor and bravado as he seeks attention and approval from others, coming off at times as not knowing how to be serious. Certainly when the sea serpent attack, Glimmer has simply had it with Hawk's attitude, snapping at him for taking them away from their goal. I always like when I'm proven wrong in a god way, and that happened here, as I'd suspected Hawk was going to simply be a liar who would betray the group. As it turns out, his stories (or at least some of them) seem to be true. He lives for adventure, and desperately wants those around him to like him. This might be part of why I like him so much already; he's been given a lot of depth rather quickly, and as Glimmer cheers him up, it's clear that he just wants friends. In this way he reminds me of "The Office's" Michael Scott, who begins the series as just an inappropriate loudmouth, but is revealed to be an incredibly lonely individual. Hawk and Bow were quick to become friends, so there were friendly interactions early on, but the shining moments for this episode involve Mermista as well. What better way to even out Hawk's boisterous, courageous personality than to introduce an apathetic, bored princess? Especially because of their past, I was grinning and laughing every time Hawk's raucous attitude clashed with Mermista's dry gloom and doom. They're again reminiscent of other characters to me; at the moment I'm thinking of "Animaniacs" characters Rita and Runt, a sarcastic cat and goofy dog. A particular line that got me was when Mermista requests her guard fetch food; Hawk is immediately interested, and she quickly specifies that none of it be for him. While Hawk's attitude is given specific explanation later in this episode, Mermista has good reason for her cynical thinking as well, obviously surrounded by negativity. She mentions the negative way her dad described the past alliance, and what does she get when she takes over? A land that is quickly deserted and a crumbling wall. Once she's got this, she then has to continue dealing with the Horde alone and the wall is further damaged, likely leading to her feeling hopeless. I got the feeling this episode that Mermista, much like Hawk, is really starved for friendship at this point. She's been alone for so long, but now she has a group of friends, and they're the kind of positive people she needs. I was glad these two got to shine this episode, with Fisher and Lovell giving excellent performances, but Adora and Catra's short encounter int he end of this episode was also quite interesting to think about. Normally what I've seen with shows like this is that the main character loses their best friend to darkness and continues trying to bring them into the light, like in "Naruto." Here, however, we've got Catra trying her hardest to convince She-Ra to rejoin her back in the Horde, rather than just fighting. She keeps having to find in the end, but before any of that, Catra spends a few minutes pleading with her former friend to return with her. It's an excellent twist on the typical broken friendship storyline I've seen before, and I'm enjoying seeing how the relationship dissolves as they go their separate ways. With the fun characters Sea Hawk and Mermista now in the show and the Rebellion picking up speed, light entertainment and a more even war are on the horizon.
