One of the maidens grows jealous of Hisone and Haruto's relationship and Elle confronts her own feelings, causing problems as training for the ritual intensifies.
Remi explains that Haruto will be the priest presiding over the ritual, becoming distracted as Natsume Misumi (Erica Mendez) fiddles with the young man's suit.
Misumi causes a disturbance after saying she really likes "Haru," but Hinomoto gets them back on track. While Remi explains the most difficult part of the ritual, Hisone stares at Misumi. She is still in a daze later as the others wonder about Haruto being a priest and what exactly his relationship is with Misumi, as they're supposedly childhood friends. She blushes, making an excuse, and they notice Haruto and the girls exit a building. Misumi is latched onto him, but is disappointed when he asks Remi to lead her and the other girls around, instead of him. He asks Hisone to help him with some difficult equipment, and Misumi watches suspiciously as they walk off, noticing Haruto's strange zombie charm. Iiboshi gives Hinomoto a risk management report, but she says something was left out: anastomosis, but doesn't explain what the term means here. This is also mentioned as Haruto commends Hisone for her help and how on the ball she's been lately, but Misumi interrupts before he can explain. Though he is annoyed, she asks for Masotan's name, and despite Hisone warning that he doesn't like strangers touching him, she gets him to relax with some scratches. Surprised, Hisone says there should be a problem, then asks Haruto what Misumi's dealis, as the girl keeps glaring at her. He says this is how she's always been; always truthful, she can be rather blunt. Haruto is then left puzzled as Hisone trots off, having decided he and Misumi, the "young ones," should get time to catch up.
Misumi starts getting nosy, demanding to know Hisone's relationship with Haruto as Remi talks, and questioning her outfit choice as Hisone changes into her flight suit.
At a store, Hisone finally snaps and asks what she's doing; Misumi explains she just says what's on her mind. Hisone assumes they're the same, revealing her own bluntness, but Misumi says she doesn't feel bad about her words like Hisone. Misumi notices colas nearby and reminisces about how Haruto struggled to be fully awake before drinking one as a kid. She is surprised when Hisone says he now wakes up before anyone else, and leaves in jealousy. Nao discovers the sulking Hisone in a locker later; the latter says calls herself a shell-less snail that Misumi could trample, and Nao threatens to salt her. They all wonder why Misumi treats Hisone so poorly, and Hisone grows worried after Nao says her kind, forgiving attitude will get her killed. Nao reveals Hisone's date with Haruto, saying knowing of it would anger Misumi. The others agree, though Hisone doesn't understand they see her and Haruto as close. As the others leave, Hisone, still not understanding, realizes she feels happy, because she has someone that others acknowledge as her friend. In their training session, Hinomoto berates Hisone as the girl struggles to connect a grapple with a target balloon, and the other pilots seem to find it difficult as well. Sosoda mentions to Remi and the male pilots that the D-pilots need to be able to sever the ropes binding Mitatsu's tails in a single shot, otherwise they'll fail. Remi says it'll be more difficult when the time comes and the priest and maidens are there, admitting to Sosoda she hasn't told the pilots about a particular "key maiden." Most of the maidens are struggling with their first day of practice, and in awe as Misumi continues, believing she'll be the key maiden; she makes them keep going. Hinomoto hears the girls practicing with their ceremonial bells and goes to watch, with a sad expression as she flashes back to a priestess from her youth. Iiboshi enters, saying how beautiful the ceremony is, and how they perform this sacred dance for days, with one being chosen for something that pains his heart. Minomoto requests they move the conversation, and he mentions she is still radiant.
Hisone visits Masotan in the hangar, and though she loves spending time with him to relax, she says she can't visit as often, otherwise Misumi will see her with Haruto.
The other D-pilots, struggling physically and mentally after the training, come upon the maidens explaining to the men how priestesses aren't the typical sacred stereotype, and unlike the D-pilots, can date. To the surprise of both the D-pilots and the men, Zaito sternly reminds them the girls are minors and wants them to go to bed. He agrees to take a picture with one girl, but notices Elle with the phone's camera. Tossing the phone back, he follows Elle and tries to explain himself. She snaps that they're just colleagues and he can mess with underage girls if he wants to. He grabs her hand when she suddenly slips on some stairs, and the two trip, leading to Zaito kissing her as she's pinned against a wall. Horrified and embarrassed, Elle calls him variations of "pervert," and storms off after slapping him and ordering him to not even look at her. Looking for Haruto, Misumi finds Hisone sleeping in the hangar and notices the zombie charm on her phone that matches Haruto's. Hisone wakes to the tearful Misumi, and the two have an encounter that puts things into perspective for Hisone, and this uneasiness surfaces as both she and Elle face life-threatening danger while training.
The story is continuing to get darker and more serious as the characters learn about the ritual, this time having to confront their own feelings.
Before, there was a creepy air about Iiboshi as he talked about the "White Lovers," but now things are becoming more menacing when he mentions something that pains him about the upcoming maiden ritual. We get to see exactly how dense Hisone can be in this episode, as she repeatedly fails to realize Misumi hates her because they both like Haruto. In a way I find it funny that she didn't realize her feelings for him after they went on a date, but at the same time I know plenty of people, myself included, miss signs too. Misumi serves as a reverse side to a coin with Hisone, having a similar personality in how she bluntly states whatever comes to mind. For Hisone, who has only ever been the one giving this side, is now on the receiving end of harsh words, and has difficulty at first recognizing a similar personality to hers. The key difference between the two is how Hisone feels bad after her outbursts, while Misumi has no regrets and stands by her statements. I can see this being part of why Haruto was able to be friends with both of them, only to end up caring for Hisone as more than just a friend. Hisone might be blunt at times, but she tries to be aware of other people's feelings, and knows she likely makes them feel bad after her outbursts. Misumi doesn't seem to care, and such a callous way of treating people could be why Haruto wouldn't be as interested in her, though for all I know she might also be underaged like the other shrine maidens. With Elle's side of things, we see a continuation of the reveal that Zaito is a much nicer guy than he seems, as he's the only one to remain serious around the maidens. Elle has previously seen him as a pervert, only to now find he's staying stoic and reminding his colleagues that they're talking to underage girls. This definitely doesn't make him an incredible guy by itself, as it should go without saying that a guy wouldn't want to get flirty with minors. It's definitely a sign of him being good-natured, however, and for Elle it's a way of causing conflict in her as she changes her opinion of him. Hisone was simply too ignorant to realize her feelings, but Elle, who has seemed to oppress emotions anyway, has been trying to avoid him, only to see how he truly acts both through his perseverance and what she happens to see. One thing I forgot to mention in my previous post that I noticed again here was the updated opening for the show, now including the uniformed Hinomoto, aspects of the ritual, and the shrine maidens. As with everything for the show, this and the scene where the maidens practice their dance are beautifully drawn and animated. The ceremonial bells the girls shake are beautiful and shine in the light, and the girls also have pieces of fabric that flow as they move. We've got an updated intro now, along with some new characters as the ritual draws near, but problems are arising as well, putting Japan in grave danger.
