As Adora learns the truth about her destiny, Glimmer and Bow set out with her returning alicorn, Swift Wind, and Entrapta makes massive strides in helping Catra.
Adora sees flashes of her experiences through the season as she falls down the pit, then finds herself standing on the ground where a hologram of Light Hope greets her.
Light Hope reveals she's been watching her since she was a girl, but couldn't protect her from the Horde. As her form is supposed to keep Adora calm but is likely outdated, she tries taking on a more pleasing one, but only creeps Adora out more. Glimmer is growing impatient waiting for Adora's help, and suggests she and Bow do something. Just then, a guard arrives, announcing the return of Adora's alicorn. To their amazement, the alicorn can now speak, calling himself Swift Wind (Adam Ray), and after letting them freak out, he says he thinks Adora needs them. He explains that since she transformed him, he's been able to feel her, and now he feels a pull, asking that they come. Glimmer decides to go, feeling the glitching is her fault anyway. She wants to go before Angella can realize they're up to something, but the queen arrives just then. She shows little surprise about the talking alicorn, and to their surprise says they should go quickly to get Adora; she doesn't want Glimmer to suffer the pain she's felt since giving up and letting her husband die. Meanwhile in the Fright Zone, Entrapta has called Catra to her lab, which she spruced up with parts she took from others' rooms, to show what she found on the crystal. She uses techno jargon to say the tech seems to be a combination of science and magic, and as the others are confused, she slows to a comical explanation pace. Catra becomes annoyed, so Entrapta says the First Ones did something that made their tech run deep into Etheria, and is excited the others want her to explain further.
Back in the First Ones temple, Light Hope explains the First Ones created her and were explorers who traveled through space to settle Etheria.
They made this place, the Crystal Castle, for She-Ra, and Light Hope has waited to tell her her destiny: the First Ones named her the champion to protect and unite Etheria. Though there were many She-Ras before her, the line was broken, and Adora is the first one to appear in 1,000 years. As Entrapta reveals there is First Ones tech running all the way to the planet's core, LH explains the princesses gain elemental powers through rune stones, and it's She-Ra's duty to bring them together. Entrapta explains to Catra that the runestones are connected to each other and the planet's grid, and could be used to hack the planet. Light Hope says that everything functions when the princesses are in balance, but the Horde is destroying them trying to gain power. Entrapta is surprised to learn about the Black Garnet, and says she could use it to hack the grid and boost the Garnet's power to be used as an energy source or weapon. Since her experiments often end explosively, the others realize Shadow Weaver won't like it, so Catra decides to proceed, unaware Hordak's spy is watching. It returns to Hordak and plays a recording of everything the group said.
Adora asks about her healing powers and how to save Glimmer, almost sending Light Hope into her spiel again, and the hologram reveals Glimmer's connection to her runestone has been disrupted.
Horrified to learn it'll take years to hone her powers, Adora rambles about how her friends need her, but Light Hope says she needs to help all of Etheria, not just them. Light Hope says she'll have to let go of her attachments, which is what the previous She-Ra, Razz's Mara, was unable to do. Dealing with a power she couldn't control and giving in to fear and poor reasoning, she caused devastation, stranding Etheria in the empty dimension Despandos and breaking the She-Ra line. Having waited so long, Light Hope wants She-Ra to train and not make similar mistakes, but Adora wants to at least help Glimmer first. Light Hope shows the memories Adora saw at the start of the episode, and says the girl feels guilty about them, and it's obvious to let go now since she endangered them. Catra and the others try to work on the Black Garnet, but the enraged Shadow Weaver enters declaring her intent to punish Catra for rebelling. Smiling, Catra says she can do what she wants to the runestone, on the authority of Hordak, who shows up on multiple screens. He explains their research intrigued him, so he gave his blessing to continue, and Entrapta can tinker with what she wants since she's been boosting their firepower. The furious SW says she alone unlocked the Garnet's power, but Hordak retorts that she wastes it on parlor tricks, and gives it to Catra. Shadow Weaver roars that they won't take what's hers, and drains energy from the Garnet before freezing Entrapta and Scorpia in place. She snarls that Catra hasn't learned after all this years and will only run, but Catra counters that the punishments she's endured have taught her all she needs. The Force Captain surprises SW, leaping down from the runestone to slice her mask and the gem in its forehead, leaving SW powerless. Pleased to have finally achieved her goal, Catra has Scorpia take SW away and Entrapta get on the machines; Entrapta's following work causes a dangerous reactionfrom the Garnet that sends a shadowy pillar into the sky. As the world begins to crumble due to Entrapta's work, Adora's friends fight to get her back and convince her to keep fighting her way.
Exploring She-Ra's past and Adora's part in everything was intriguing, and the other aspects of the episode only improved it.
Until now, there has been a lot of mystery around She-Ra, who Adora and Light Hope are, and how a lot of this started, especially for someone who doesn't know much about the original series, like me. We already learned from Razz about a She-Ra before Adora, but now we're seeing a larger scope that reminded me of Avatar: The Last Airbender, with a line of women. Adora has had an idea up to this point of how important a role she's playing, but it's not until now that she sees the depths to it; she's a protector of the entire planet, taking on a role that has been passed down for millennia. The way Light Hope shows her is itself intriguing and beautiful, with colorful representations of the princesses, a starry sky, and a space view of Etheria. Now despite knowing little about the original She-Ra, I do remember seeing her origin in an art class I took, and I always wondered how the world she ended up on because of her ship was connected to Eternia, yet be so far from it and her family. Now there's actually a reason given to it, with Mara having caused Etheria to get stuck in effectively a dead zone universe, where it was almost destroyed. I wouldn't be surprised if anybody from the universe it's from assume it to be destroyed, and her family likely assumes the same. Light Hope claiming Adora needs to let go of her attachments to do well was another thing that reminded me of Avatar, and hits Adora right at a fear she's had. Like Glimmer, Adora blames herself for what's happening, worrying that she's only endangering everyone no matter what she does. It's a common theme for superheroes, as she's stuck wondering if she should just be the powerful hero or if she gets down time and relationships. Now she's being told she needs to abandon them, which will hurt to do and leave her in a solitary life, which might work for fighting but would be sad. The way the magic is combined with technology is really interesting to me; rather than having them be separate forces, magic is basically boosting tech, with the two forces working together perfectly. I previously mentioned that Adora's frustration with the other Light Hope hologram was similar to a person who doesn't understand how best to use some search engines. This episode feels the same, as we learn the entire planet is so ingrained with tech that everything is connected, sort of like the Internet connecting our world. Glimmer has a sort of magical computer virus, as teleporting out of the Black Garnet cell has caused her to begin shorting out after losing her own stone connection. Speaking of Glimmer, I was surprised in a way that she was getting impatient the way she did about Adora, but still liked sections with her. She feels responsible for getting them into this situation in the first place, and thankfully, Angella agrees with her sentiment they can't abandon Adora. I was so glad to see Swift Wind return, especially now that he's talking and is a fun and funny inclusion to the group, with them shocked at his ability to talk. He says he's been capable of complex thought for a few weeks, so Adora's magic has had a definite speedy impact on him. He seems silly for the most part so far, though not quite on par with Sea Hawk, and clearly quite proud of who he is and what he's done thus far. Everyone's reactions to him being able to talk were perfect, with Glimmer and Bow being dumbfounded and Adora having her own reaction. Angella didn't have much to say, but even the guard was funny, unsure what she was bringing into the castle. This is a perfect time to reintroduce him, because it also brings in how he has a connection with Adora, the perfect way to lead the others to her. The Horde sections of this episode were also good, with Entrapta gaining more freedom to do what she wants and things looking up for Catra. Thanks to the data Catra brought, Entrapta has unlocked massive secrets for the Horde, and figured out they can potentially "hack" what gives everyone power. For Entrapta, everything going on is just allowing her to continue researching, which I would say is her ultimate flaw, because she doesn't care about damage caused. She clearly doesn't have malevolent intentions with what she's doing, but her actions are providing Hordak and his forces amazing weapons. Entrapta is just giddy at the thought of "hacking the planet" because it's more research, she learns, and it's quite a feet. The person she'd be handing the reins to, however, is a powerful dictator who would use his gained power to crush everyone under his boot. Once hacking into the connection between the runestone, it's possible Hordak could force everyone to hand those over to him as well. He'd then have perfect control over the planet, as no one would have the power to do anything. The most satisfying moment in Catra's sections is when she faces off with Shadow Weaver, and finally gets revenge for all the pain she's been through. This has to be the sweetest moment for Catra even before she gets this opportunity, as thanks to her planning, she was able to chip away at SW's position until ultimately, Hordak sides with her in feeling SW isn't doing well enough. She has undermined SW's authority, and now gets to defeat her in a fight AND have her taken away, usurping her position of power. I've at times found episodes in this series annoying to some degree, but this was one that hit the mark perfectly and sets us up for a dangerous season finale.
