With Bakugou a captive of the villains and Midoriya recovering from his worst injuries yet, a suggested rescue mission splits the class.
With Midoriya's plan a success, the group of students is on the verge of rescuing Bakugou and Tokoyami, but more villains stand in their way.
The episode opens just before Mandalay sent out her messages, with the Vlad King and the frustrated students. Kirishima begs to be let out so he can help the others, but Vlad explains that Aizawa's order allowing students to engage was only for defense. Hearing noise outside, Kirishima thinks Aizawa has returned, but Vlad realizes it is someone else and protects the students just as Dabi bursts in with his flames. Now reunited with Shoji but facing a rampaging Dark Shadow, Midoriya has to think fast if he wants to save Bakugou from the villains. The episode opens with Shoji protecting the broken Midoriya from Dark Shadow, explaining Moonfish caught he and Tokoyami off-guard before, severing his arm. Despite it not being a big deal, as he can regenerate limbs, the attack caused Tokoyami to fly into a rage, unleashing his dark power. Shoji has since been hiding in the brush, as Dark Shadow attacks any movement or sound. Though Tokoyami's pleaded with Shoji that he run, the latter can't bear the idea of leaving a friend behind to suffer, and says he is determined to get the Tokoyami back to camp where the lights will calm Dark Shadow. Shoji asks Midoriya what Midoriya will do: help him save Tokoyami, or continue his rush to help Bakugou. Midoriya realizes he has a third option. Bakugou and Todoroki continue to struggle with moonfish, as despite Bakugou's desire to use his explosions, Todoroki again notes it could start another fire and points out they would also blind him, preventing him from countering a fire with his ice. As their frustration grows, trees suddenly come tumbling down as they see Shoji and Midoriya barreling toward them with Tokoyami and Dark Shadow in pursuit. Per Midoriya's plan, Shoji ran to them while using his arms to direct Dark Shadow, and begs Bakugou and Todoroki to use their quirks to cause light and calm the creature. Bakugou stops Todoroki from doing so at first, allowing Dark Shadow to easily defeat Moonfish by shattering his teeth and slamming him into a tree. With the villain out of the way, the two then leap into action and pacify Dark Shadow by passing him with flames. With the villains attacking and the heroes caught off guard, the students of UA are in a rough spot trying to survive.
Immediately after Dabi set the forest ablaze and a poisonous gas was released on the students, villain Magne, pulled Pixie-Bob toward herself, knocking the hero out. Kota, in his secret place, sees the burning forest as he thinks about his parents' death and Mandalay saying he'll understand their sacrifice one day. Elsewhere, Aizawa leads the failing students to Vlad King before Mandalay sends out a telepathic alert to everyone and he rushes out. Before he can make it far, he finds himself face to face with a fiery blast from Dabi. Finally at camp and out of the forest, class 1A sets about strengthening their perks, soon joined by class 1B, but all is not well for the heroes. The episode opens on Vlad King telling class 1B what they'll be doing and how he wants them to shine like 1A has done previously. When a student asks how they'll be training when everyone has different perks, he simply explains they'll be training themselves like any normal work out, pushing their perks past their limit to get used to and past the negative effects. The group finds class 1A already working to strengthen their perks, and are horrified at the grueling difficulty and manner Tiger of the Wild, Wild Pussycats. Class 1B asks again how everyone's quirks will be kept in check with such training, and the Pussycats explain their own group's powerset can keep track of everyone. With the ability to monitor everyone, the Pusscyats serve as a way to quickly train the students, who have less time than normal to advance. Despite struggling to improve, Midoriya remembers that after being given a power too strong for him, he was able to get better with help from All Might and Gran Torino. As he continues working, an annoyed Kota watches. Class 1A learns they have to start cooking their own food, which Iida quickly realizes is to train them to feed victims of disaster situations, and encourages the others. Though Momo says everyone needs to learn how to make a fire, the group tries and fails to use Bakugou's quirk to cook, but succeeds with Todoroki's. As the group eats and some accidental insults are said, Kota walks away from the group, disgusted, which Midoriya notices. He brings curry to the boy, who becomes more angry that Midoriya found his "secret place." Though trying to help, Midoriya's efforts to relate to Kota only serve to enrage the boy further. As the class sleeps, a group of villains led by Dabi arrives. Despite some being anxious to attack, Dabi says they need to wait for three more people. Explaining a small, experienced group is better than a bunch of power, Dabi says they're going to prove they hold the heroes's peace in their hands. As most of 1A struggles with their training, a small group suffers the most, having to take long classes with Aizawa along with their training as a result of low test scores. Aizawa also warns Uraraka and Aoyoma, who almost failed their tests, and tells everyone to remember where they came from to understand how and why they need to keep pushing forward. Midoriya asks if any other teachers will be coming, and Aizawa explains that like he said when they learned the camp had been moved, the school had to keep things quiet. With All Might especially a target, few were told and no other would come. The classes worry when the Pussycats say fun will come after the hard work, and Midoriya is broken from a stupor about All Might by Tiger pulling him back to train. While preparing dinner, Uraraka is shocked that Bakugou is good with a knife, and Midoriya opens up to Todoroki about Kota. Todoroki says it's likely hard to reach the boy because they are all strangers to him. Explaining that words need to be followed by action, he suggests Midoriya not keep poking into the situation, as he tends to do. After dinner, the Pussycats explain the coming game to the students. While teams from one class enter, teams from the other will wait in within and try to scare them. Not all goes as planned, however, and the heroes and students are in for a violent sudden end to their game. The season so far is definitely picking up faster than the first episode, a filler, did. According to the My Hero Academia Fandom Wikipedia, the scene in which we see the students training their quirks wasn't shown in the manga. While I'm a constant reader of the manga, I'd forgotten this wasn't shown before, but was glad to see it here, as it was interesting how many different kinds of training were going on at once for all the different quirks. One can't help but feel bad for the group that has to take extra lessons, but considering how hard they're working and having Aizawa as a teacher, it's just more likely that they'll improve. Though it's great seeing Midoriya try to reach Kota, it's also good that Bakugou is warning him about his method of helping people. Midoriya has a habit of going out of his way to try helping people, which is admirable, but sometimes all he can do is talk. Without anything backing up his words, he could come off as just saying he knows what a person is going through, with no evidence to get them to believe him. At the same time, he himself is struggling with his own issues and doesn't yet fully understand how to help others as a hero. He of course knows he needs to try, and is getting better at using One for All, but he's often naturally more down and not a symbol of happiness to people like All Might is. Without a cheerful disposition to inspire, many people see him first as a gloomy kid and it takes a lot longer than it should for them to warm up to him. Obviously one big question is what Dabi and the others are exactly planning, though they clearly have quite a few powers going for them. In particular, his ability to instantly rot things will prove dangerous for those who come in contact with him, much like when people interact with Shigaraki. Them attacking now will have extremely negative effects, both considering my prior knowledge from reading the manga and from the current situation in hero society. At the same time, though, it will provide Midoriya the opportunity to help Kota b actually having action to back up his words. Only a few episodes in, the action is already kicking up, and viewers are in for quite a few fights soon. The students of “My Hero Academia” have returned for a super-powered summer vacation filled with threats in the show’s third season. The series is set in a world where humans have evolved to no longer have a second joint in a certain toe, somehow causing them to develop super powers, referred to as “quirks.” Many then become superheroes, fighting off supervillains, with society eventually developing a system of restraints to license heroes and prevent people from using perks unnecessarily in public. Society’s greatest hero is Toshinori Yagi, known as “All Might,” the symbol of peace with the power to multiply his natural abilities, giving him super strength, speed, and agility. Main character Izuku Midoriya, though dreaming of becoming a great hero like All Might, learned at age four that he was born “quirkless.” He aims to overcome his lack of power by training and learning everything he can about the heroes and villains known to society. Being quirkless also results in friends turning on him, with Katsuki Bakugou, a boy from his childhood with explosive sweat, constantly bullying him. The main source of bullying appears in Midoriya's name, which Bakugou notes can be interpreted in Japanese as "Deku," or "one who can do nothing." Even Midoriya’s mother can’t find a way to support his dream fully, but his possibilities change when he meets All Might. After All Might saves him and gives an autograph, Midoriya clings to him as he leaps away, and after they land, All Might suddenly reverts to an emaciated form. Midoriya discovers that All Might was injured in the past, losing multiple organs, causing him to cough blood in this form and limiting his time powered up. All Might soon recognizes Midoriya's heroic nature, and reveals that his quirk, "One For All," can be passed on, and he chooses Midoriya as his successor. The first episode of this season is a filler episode made to remind viewers of what all has happened, since so much time has passed since season 2’s final episode aired. As summer is coming, the students want to spend some time having fun, but past events have them on a tight leash. In season one, the league of villains attacked Midoriya's school, U.A. High, and only retreated after an all-out counter from All Might. Later in season 2, the villains struck a city Midoriya was in, along with Stain, the man known as the "Hero Killer," and Midoriya and his friends barely survived. With a training camp planned for the summer, the teachers don't want the students too out of their sights, where they'd be in danger. Two often perverse characters, Minoru Mineta and Denki Kaminari, invite Midoriya to do endurance training at the pool, where they plot to spy on the girls, as they need permission to use the pool and see Midoriya as a way to make their lie believable. Midoriya, more focused on training and not knowing their true intentions, invites the other boys from class, and the group soon focuses on swimming races. While talking, Midoriya’s friend Tenya Iida brings up everything they’ve been through since joining U.A. as a way to remind viewers of past events. After the main races, during which numerous characters use their abilities to completely avoid actually swimming, the group gets to the final, with Midoriya, Bakugou and Shoto Todoroki, who has ice and fire powers. The episode comes to an end with the race and the audience learning of things to come from the group’s teacher Shota Aizawa, as well as the League of Villains. The episode does little more than serve as filler, but is a good way to remind fans of the show’s current situations. The following episode gets back into the true story, with the students heading to camp, only to find themselves on a mountainside. Here they meet two members of the hero team “The Pussycats,” and realize they will have to traverse a dangerous forest to get to camp. Before anyone can get back to the bus, one of the Pussycats uses her earth-manipulation quirk to knock them down the mountain with a landslide. She also mentions that because they are on private property, the students can use their quirks freely, which they can't normally do because of societal law. The students come face to face with large creatures, quickly realizing they are earth constructs, and begin using their quirks to speed through the forest. This is one of the more effective moments of the two episodes, as it shows in a few minutes and without clunky dialogue what the characters can do and how far they’ve progressed. Everyone demonstrates the skills and techniques they've learned, and work off each other, as the teachers worked to get them to learn. The group finally gets to camp after three hours, exhausted and facing the effects of overusing their quirks, and get dinner. Here, the group also meets Kota Izumi, a boy with a chip on his shoulder when it comes to superheroes, who says he doesn't want to be near any of them. Midoriya and the others begin to get comfortable at camp, but know they have hard work ahead of them, and Midoriya takes an interest in Kota. What the students don’t realize is the true danger lurking on the edge of the camp, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Fans of the manga know that future episodes will bring visual spectacles to the screen as the students face greater danger. Even those who don't, however, can rest assured that great action is coming, and it will exemplify how far Midoriya has come from his quirkless days. |
