While Davos starts building an army, Danny struggles to get back in fighting shape as his loved ones deal with other problems.
Following his disastrous battle with Davos, Danny is taken to the hospital where surgery is done on his leg, and an emotional Colleen is shown his braced knee.
Meanwhile, Rhyno and his gang find Davos and Chen in their building, and despite his lost eye, Chen proves to still have fighting prowess when they challenge him. Davos breaks up the fight using his fist, and pointing out how they're stuck scavenging, offers them training, a roof, and food. Out in the city, Misty meets with Captain William Pike, warning him that there is a new, dangerous fist-wielder, and offers to take him down. When he claims it's not her duty to handle this situation, she realizes he plans to let Davos kill the remaining Triads; he tells her to return to Harlem for her new job. She takes this news back to Colleen, and asks about Danny after saying it wouldn't be a good idea for a detective to go over the head of a captain in another precinct. Colleen explains that Danny's brace came from the people who made Misty's arm; the latter is impressed when she says Ward is handling the situation. Since things went poorly with Davos and Walker, Colleen has been checking out the Frank Choi situation, and realized the odd numbers in his book are life debt payments for him helping people get into America. They theorize that one of her family members got into America this way by paying with the box, and they are surprised when Danny enters. He brushes off his injury, saying his Rand compression brace speeds up the healing, and when Colleen asks if the doctors know what he did, he says he had to get out. Misty and Colleen explain the situation with Davos, and when they tell him about the bowl the Crane Sisters mentioned, he recalls the art auction Joy attended. Misty goes to check it out, congratulating Danny on being "back in action," since at least his leg is still attached. Things are tense between the Danny and Collen as he continues trying to handle things alone, because he sees the situation as his fault for trying to reason with Davos. Since he worries about Davos having two powered fists in the city, Colleen suggests he come to Bayard with her to spread the word about his former ally.
Joy gets a visit while on the phone, and grabs a Taser before answering the door, where Misty tells her about Danny, disgusted when Joy pretends to not care.
Joy claims to know nothing besides the bowl being important, so Misty persuades Mika Prada's number out of her by noting her extreme security won't stop Davos. At Bayard, Colleen notices Danny struggling as she puts up fliers, claiming she can tell he's bottling up a feeling that he's responsible for Davos's actions, which he isn't. She hugs him when he says he is responsible, saying he scared her; he says he keeps testing the relationship and she reminds him that it doesn't come with a manual. Colleen gets Danny to reveal that as kids, Davos always pushed him in the right direction, so in spite of what he's done, the idea of cops killing him is unbearable. She comforts him by pointing out his desire to help Davos is no different than how she still feels something for Bakuto. In the meantime, Ward is getting plastered at a bar rather than going to work, but his assistant calls Bethany, who suggests he attend an NA meeting. He tells her his drinking is more related to Danny's situation than the one with Joy, and he again turns down her offer to go to a meeting, saying it's time for a bar. Realizing she's wasting her time, Bethany decides to go to a meeting, and the bartender steps in when Ward tries to make her stay, incapacitating him when he becomes hostile.
After taking out more gang members, Davos tells Chen they need to prepare for his students, explaining that Danny will just keep coming after him.
Though Chen sees them as disposable, Davos says they could rise to the occasion; and while talking about the city's "cancer," Davos notices and kills some car thieves, against Chen's wishes. Since talking with Joy, Misty has reached out to Mika, who details the bowl's history and how expensive and rare it is, and reveals there's only one. Mika explains that Professor Ernst Erskine, whom the bowl belonged to, has numerous papers about the object, and she has a thangka, or hanging scroll, about it. While Mika fishes everything out, Misty snaps pictures of a bell-shaped artifact, as it has Colleen's family crest on it. Mika says the thangka is supposedly from a hidden city in the Himalayas, but it turns out to be Shambhala Bhilai, rather than K'un-Lun. Though they both realize the scroll tells a story, it's in a dead language, but as Misty snaps pictures, Mika says Erskine believed the bowl to be part of a ritual. Joy goes to Walker's apartment, confused when the latter doesn't recognize her. Realizing it's Mary, she requests to speak to Walker, but Mary says she's not reachable. When Joy brings up Davos, Mary asks about Danny, and though Joy wants to go, she agrees to stay and tells Mary how she knows Danny; Mary is sure they can patch up their relationship. When Joy says she hurt him, Mary expresses regret about warning Danny of Walker, though she feels like the latter, and maybe Joy, is just someone trying to get by. She explains that Walker dislikes her and so wants to get away, and Joy saying Walker actually works hard to protect her makes her realize Joy wants Walker's protection. Having decided to find another way out, Joy leaves, complimenting Mary's art; a piece of a woman looking in a mirror to another face catches her attention. We flash back to a cell in Sokovia where Walker was imprisoned and Mary was born to cope with the situation; rain brought her out and she'd carve pictures in the wall. Back in the present, Mary decides to dump out a supply of Valium, then shuts off the faucet, which she's had running throughout the episode. In the remainder of the episode, Danny and Colleen are forced to make painful choices, and while Ward makes a discovery, Mary leaves Walker a message.
For me, the best parts of this episode came from Ward and Mary as we delve more into the characters.
Obviously we know that Ward is an addict, and him getting drunk is nothing new, but now we have some strong reasons behind it. Anyone would need a way to cope after essentially being told someone important to them doesn't want anything to do with them, then Danny also gets injured. While they started out the show as clear foes due to Ward not trusting Danny, they have become steadfast friends, and I've enjoyed seeing them interact. Even the moments where Ward is seemingly being his jerk self, where I first thought most people would react angrily, Danny simply laughs, and Ward soon joins in. When you look into his past, Ward lost Danny as a kid, grew up with an abusive father, and now has lost Joy and has repeatedly been about to lose Danny again. This would be enough to put anyone in a tailspin, and while he didn't handle it well, Ward did what he knows how to do, and saw consequences for it. Mary's background is intriguing as well, as before all we knew was that she was in the military in the past, but now we see a bit of what she went through. With this scene alone, it's obvious Mary Walker experienced quite a lot of torture, as along with her appearance, she's hearing terrible things from above. In such a situation, it's actually normal for a person to begin dissociating, as their mind is looking for any way it can find to cope with a horrific situation. This is exactly what happened to her, resulting in the "Mary" and "Walker" personalities, with the former allowing her to escape the violence with art. It also wasn't until this episode that I realized the true reasoning behind Walker going to Arizona: the arid climate. While Danny was likely right in his assumption she was trying to get him feeling falsely secure with what she shared, she did give a good reason to go to Arizona. For all I know, she might actually want to see the birds, but for now, the best reason I can think of for her to go there is the lack of rain. If Walker hates Mary as much as she says, she would try her hardest to avoid running water, especially rain, and Arizona is definitely a place to go to avoid rainfall. There's also more seen with Joy this episode, and while there's not as much as what we get from the others, it's important to her character. Ever since Davos stole the fist, Joy has seemed guilty and uneasy about what they did, here easily working with Misty and admitting to Mary she hurt Danny. Later on there is a more telling scene that suggests she might be trying to make up for what she did, but I won't say what happens then. There's not really character changes for Misty in this episode, as she's not the main focus and is more based in Luke Cage than here. She is massively important to the current situation, however, as it's because of her that they were able to access information about the bowl. She and Colleen also make impressive work on the Frank Choi situation, with her noticing Mika's artifact and Colleen figuring out what Choi was doing. Unfortunately, I didn't really care as much about the clear relationship struggle between Danny and Colleen, nor the former's moping about Davos and the physical struggle he's going through. Let's compare what Danny is going through with Davos and his broken leg, and what Matt Murdock has experienced in his third season. With Matt, there has been a persistent problem as he deals with his lost senses, his broken body, and his entire faith. Ever since being blinded, Matt has worked hard to hone his other senses, and was forged into an intelligent, skilled fighter and man. In his third season, his hearing, taste, and smell, were damaged, and along with giving issues with how he "sees," and even balance, he's left hearing strangely and tasting only ash and blood, as he tells Maggie. His body is also incredibly injured, and even after a long process of re-training and trying to get back out there, he is still hurt. His entire faith is shattered as he feels like he is given only pain in return for his hard work and trying to help others. Then there's Danny, who has a broken leg, and while admittedly dealing with a loss of identity as well, is upset at his friend's betrayal. Danny does have a true struggle in front of him as he's been stripped of something he earned long ago, that has become a major part of him, and he has to fight for it. But at the same time, the bigger part of the focus for this episode was on his naive beliefs about Davos, an aspect I thought we were done with. To his credit, actor Finn Jones is doing well with what he's given, talking about the bond he and Davos had growing up, though it would probably be more effective to have shown us more of them growing up in flashbacks this season. When it comes to his injury, his leg is obviously a terrible thing to have damaged at, but compared to Misty, who lost her arm, or Matt, who was stuck recovering in a church basement, he's got Rand doctors and tech speeding up the process. We do see him struggle throughout the episode, but considering what a big deal they made it, it's strange that he's simply using a cane, and later in the episode ditches it. Danny keeps getting beat this season, but while it's admirable how he refuses to stay down, he recovers too fast, and there's less tension because he'll clearly win in the end. With the relationship, it's just a bit of a tired superhero aspect that gets way too focused on now, as we get taken out of the superhero world to focus more on their normal life aspects. It's necessary to do that from time to time, but there are more important things going on right now than Danny needing to repeat how he's feeling to Colleen. I know I talked for quite some time about that, but I wanted to give some focus to the weaker areas of the show as well as the strong. I still enjoyed the episode, especially when it came to Ward and Mary, and I want to see how Danny combats the threat Davos is building.
