Now in a bind, Jessica is forced to make a choice about Alisa as Trish and Malcolm make decisions about their futures. Jessica wakes in Alisa's stolen camper, and her demands to know where they are gets only vague responses.
Alisa begs her daughter to come with her willingly, saying Jessica is her cure while she is Jessica's. Jessica says she has a life and helps people, but Alisa counters that she's always numbing herself by being drunk all day, and says they could find a better life. Saying it's heroic Jessica wants to save people from her, Alisa goes inside as the former deals with a passing driver. At the hospital, Trish's doctor fails to wake her, so Dorothy shoves her way through and succeeds, with her daughter requesting water. The writers slip in another Easter Egg about Trish's future with the Doctor saying she's "used up two of her nine lives," and Dorothy ignores Trish's questions about Jessica's wellbeing, saying she's not their problem and Costa asked questions before. Trish says she feels like crap and the doctor says that while she seems to be rid of viruses, they'll need samples, only for Trish to try to leave. Dorothy shoves her back and tells her she needs to accept she is a wreck, dashing her hopes of being powered by saying she's only a failed radio personality. Back in the RV, Alisa notices Jessica eying the keys, but the two run through why Jessica's only plans to escape would fail, as punching out her mother or taking the keys would be difficult, and Alisa would stop her from diving out to call anyone. Alisa says she wants it to be tough for Jessica to leave her, and says in a somewhat corny way that the only thing Jessica hasn't tried is joining her. The two become quiet upon seeing a happy family in a van beside them, and Alisa says she wants to find a purpose, like Jessica has been trying to do, as being the most powerful women in the world means there is plenty they could do. Jessica states that she won't leave Trish, and Alisa says she's hurting herself because of Jess, explaining further after Jess's indignation that non-powered people around them always feel like that, even Karl. Jessica makes a funny, yet oddly in-world reference saying Alisa'd better not say "With great power comes great responsibility," and Alisa jokes about Jess's childhood. Meanwhile, Malcolm finishes up his last work at Alias, fixing Jessica's wall, then leaves his key and calls Linda Chao to confirm an appointment. After a shower and haircut, he dresses up in suit and tie for a spiffy new suave look, and heads out with a sigh. Alisa is shocked to learn Jessica sees her as similar Kilgrave and begs her daughter to give her another chance, saying she wants to make up for what she's done. The two slam to a halt upon finding the burning wreckage of a truck carrying propane tanks and the family from earlier. Alisa rushes out despite Jessica's pleas and saves the daughter, leaving Jessica to get the father out just before a tank hit him. He realizes his wife Trudy is still trapped somewhere, so Alisa leaves with him and Jessica finds Trudy pinned under a piece of metal. She is able to lift it, but can't reach Trudy's hand until Alisa tosses the metal away. Jessica looks on in shock and the two lead Trudy away, only to hear the trucker scream for help. Despite Alisa saying the fire is too intense, Jessica says she can't leave him. Leaving Jessica to take Trudy back to the relieved family, Alisa instead puts up her hood and rushes to the truck, and Jessica tells the family to call the police. Jessica rushes out just in time for a massive explosion, and in a panic runs over and finds the man alive under sheet metal, Alisa having shielded him with her body. Stunned, Jessica gives her a scared hug, and we cut to Hogarth, pervertedly watching her yoga instructor from behind as they go through poses. Malcolm arrives, with the two complementing each other's new appearances as he reveals he's cut ties with Jess and gone freelance. Initially hesitant when he says he's wrapping up her case, Hogarth welcomes him in when we reveals he talked to Chao and has evidence she'll want. Jessica excites Alisa by revealing she's going along with her, but says they need to cross the border and she has to make a call first. She meets with Oscar in a diner, and though he urges her to not do this because of what Alisa's done, especially after she says she's going he says he'll help. He tells her she has him and Vido, and she explains she's realized how isolate she made herself, and that even if people come after them, they can make it. Jessica suddenly notices a man with a gun and dark cars outside, and they realize that, because police went through both their apartments, they would have seen Oscar's painting and connected the dots. He tells her to just lead them to Alisa, but she simply kisses him and makes her escape, hiding in a dump truck that takes her back to Alisa, whom she tells they just have to drive north. Hogarth, overjoyed at Malcolm's find, meets with Chao and Benowitz, and agrees to their deal, stipulating that they must add more zeroes. Chao says they'll see her in court and starts leaving, so Hogarth brings up a video Malcolm recorded while meeting with her, which reveals that she is laundering drug money from offshore. She goes on to share what she learned about Benowitz, assuring him she won't out him but he should do it so that he's not vulnerable. Chao says she has no proof in the video, but Hogarth counters that all it takes is a shred of doubt to destroy a business. With Benowitz freaking out, Hogarth demands double the promised severance, along with all her clients, including Rand, despite it being 62% of their business. Chao threatens Hogarth that she also has skeletons in her closet, but Hogarth replies that she has nothing to lose. In her office, she surprises Malcolm by not hiring him, saying he is inexperienced and unlicensed. He protests initially, but gives in when she pays him handsomely. Jessica tells Alisa they can get to Montreal on a train, but Alisa refuses to then go to Uruguay, as that was Karl's place. Despite Jessica's disbelief, Alisa says they could go to a war zone, because she wants to be heroic by helping needy villages or the elderly. The two soon have to take a detour as they see a roadblock, and a phone from the family that owned the camper goes off, the family having contacted Costa. She answers but doesn't speak, so he says that things are over for Alisa, but she can prove she's a hero by turning her mother in, rather than aiding in her escape. Jessica destroys the phone and the cops head out. Though Jessica is now determined to escape, Alisa has realized she'll get Jess killed and makes a choice. Back at the hospital, Dorothy shuts off a news report about the accident Alisa and Jessica found, telling Trish she'll handle the finances and, to Trish's disgust, how to go about building her back up. The two are interrupted by Costa, and Dorothy angrily tells him to not ask for Trish's help, so he says he just wants to find Alisa and sends her away. Trish can't believe Jessica would help Alisa, but he notes that the bond between a child and mother is a big deal to anyone. He says Jess might think Trish is just better off without her and asks if Jess has anyplace she'd go near Westchester, and Trish has a realization but keeps it to herself. Leaving his number, Costa leaves, suspicious, and Trish decides to leave herself as Alisa sits outside Playland. Though Jessica wants to just go, Alisa breaks in and gets on the Ferris Wheel, telling an upset Jessica the police can come and she won't cause her daughter's death. Jessica says she won't say goodbye again and climbs in despite Alisa's objections. Inside, Alisa says she's made many mistakes in life, yet Jessica is still standing. Despite Jessica's complaints, Alisa says that Jessica does care about people and wrongdoings, even if it hurts, and that her own greatest deed was creating her daughter. The two are interrupted by a surprise hand from another character, and the episode moves ahead to months later, with Jessica feeling the effects of everything she learned and did leading up to her and Alisa's time on the wheel. At the same time, other characters deal with the new lives resulting from their own actions, with Trish making a strange discovery. Out of everyone, I think the two that had the biggest changes this episode were Malcolm and Alisa. Malcolm has been through a lot due to Kilgrave and Jessica, but was always willing to put himself on the line to try helping her. His anger a few episodes ago was pretty reasonable, as on matter what he did, Jessica wasn't allowing him to do much, due to her fear of letting people get close. Not telling him about Alisa was obviously the final straw, and while it initially seemed in this episode that he was giving her another chance, he instead takes and finishes Hogarth's case, having gone off on his own. He wanted to be with Jessica's business and seemed to believe that was a great way to help people, but has come to the conclusion he has to go out and do other things if that's his goal. Alisa makes a massive turnaround toward the end of the episode, finally realizing that her actions are going to result in Jessica's death. She obviously believes Jessica seems to be the answer to the problem of her anger, but doesn't want to drag her daughter into an even more difficult life, even if it could mean she can do better things. On the other hand, we have Dorothy, who changed negatively in the previous episode and doubled down on it now. Initially it seemed that Trish's brush with death was going to cause a change in Dorothy's attitude toward Jessica, but that was short-lived once she found out about Alisa, immediately back to blaming everything on Jess. It's difficult to pin down exactly what Dorothy is currently feeling, as she seems truly concerned about Trish, but we know she has been abusive in the past and seems more obsessed with getting Trish a great image again. Her obsession also shows us exactly what Trish was talking about when she woke up and spoke with Jessica, as she mentioned feeling powerless in part due to Dorothy. It's more understandable that she would so desperately want powers, as in her lowest point, her mom, rather than comfort her, focuses on making her famous and telling her she's not heroic and is nothing more than a failed radio personality. She's more determined than ever, not surprisingly, to keep trying despite what Dorothy and the doctors say, heading out because she is determined to help Jess. Jessica is definitely stuck in a few difficult places multiple times in this episode, mainly of course that she knows she needs to turn Alisa in but not being able to condemn her own mother to death. When the rescue the people and Alisa goes to help the trucker, it's clear that, despite fighting just moments earlier, Jessica is worried that her mother died in the explosion. Later on she gets more difficult choices, as both Oscar and Costa beg her to turn Alisa in, both noting how difficult things would be and how it's the right thing to do so. With Hogarth's wrapped-up storyline, we see a change in personality that is slightly back to how she was before, back to her cutthroat nature, especially since manipulating Inez into killing Shane and being arrested. However, she reveals to Chao and Benowitz that, in a new outlook on life, she understands that people are what matters. This is evidenced by her payment to Malcolm, as thought we don't see the amount, it is enough to get him leaving happily despite being upset moments before that she wasn't planning on hiring him. Much like last season, this episode ends things on a dark emotional rollercoaster, and though everything's said and done, I know a lot will happen in season 3, and I can't wait to see what adventures Jessica gets into next.
