After failing to capture Frank, Pilgrim heads to the trailer, and Dumont's paranoia as Billy fetches their passports makes Madani suspicious.
Mahoney calls in his coming arrival with Frank, and while ranting to the uncaring Punisher about taking him to jail, he gets a call from Madani.
He shuts her down and says due to her lies, he'll arrest her, and hangs up. At first relieved to see a cop car, Mahoney is forced to swerve when it turns out to be Pilgrim. Mahoney refuses to give Frank a cuff key as Pilgrim peppers the ambulance with bullets, and the hitman eventually sends them off an overpass. Madani arrives and stops him from continuing his chase, but he is able to loop around as she walks cautiously forward, and steals her car. With Mahoney's seatbelt keeping him trapped, Frank is able to free himself, and after assuring the officer help is coming, goes outside and pops his shoulder into place. He notices fire and leaking gas, however, and returns to Mahoney, cutting him free. They manage to hobble away as the ambulance explodes. Frank walks away despite Mahoney's protests once they're safe, and though pulling a pistol, the officer can't bring himself to shoot the Punisher. Pilgrim pulls over, and after destroying something from Madani's car, covers a gash on his side. He then sets Madani's navigation system to return to the trailer.
Dumont shuts off a report about the event upon seeing Billy, who is upset she tried to hide Frank's escape; she admits his relentless pursuit scares her.
He starts acting cold and she wonders what he'll do; he says he's getting their new papers and was never as happy as he is since being with her and cutting out Frank. At the accident scene, Mahoney tells Madani what happened; she says Frank couldn't have left him the same as he couldn't have shot the Punisher in the back. He asks why she helped Frank, and she says the man isn't a criminal nor a hero, and he can't do anything with it because that's just how it is. Dumont calls Dinah, feigning worry about the accident, and makes the agent suspicious by asking if Frank would come after her. Dumont asks about Billy, but Madani says she can't discuss the case, and after the doctor says the hell seems to never end, Madani suggests Billy could be long gone, promising to let her know if anything happens. Frank uses his stolen badge to find David Schultz's address, where he confuses the senator by beating his way in. He becomes angry as Schultz denies knowing him or what he's talking about, and demands that the senator help him find Pilgrim.
Pilgrim arrives at the trailer and goes in, holding Curtis at gunpoint and noticing the shotgun to match the door's holes. Curtis claims it's for potential danger in the rough area, pointing out the wounds on Pilgrim, who chuckles and admits his difficulties.
Forcing Curtis to sit, he states he'll shoot the marine's kneecap if he goes for the gun, then asks about Madani; Curtis lies that she comes by occasionally for sex. Knowing he's lying, Pilgrim demands Frank and Amy, saying he has little time and it would be better for Curtis to not show loyalty to his friends by protecting them. Pilgrim compares Curtis to the biblical Peter for denying knowing Frank, and reveals his brutal past when he would've immediately judged the marine. While respecting Curtis's choice, he still doesn't believe him, and pulls out the brass knuckles. To their shock, Amy bursts in, and while Curtis handles Pilgrim, she grabs the shotgun, and manages a blow to his leg. She escapes as Curtis holds the man off, but Pilgrim soon knocks him out and leaves, again drenched in blood. Meanwhile, Billy finds the five remaining in his group at the bar, where Jose is disgusted at the loss of their friends and wants revenge against Frank. Noting that killing Frank won't bring their friends back, Billy says they have something to lose. Admitting this is because of his choice, Billy turns down Jose again, suggesting they all leave as he doesn't want them dead or imprisoned. He hands out the passports, and says the point of his own trip isn't where he's going, but who it's with. He then leaves with his bag of cash. Frank arrives at the trailer and learns of Pilgrim's attack. He calls her phone with Curtis's, but finds it on the ground outside. Infuriated, he fetches David Schultz, whom Curtis is horrified to learn about. The senator repeats his innocent, so Frank retrieves the photos and threatens to kill him. As Frank continues his interrogation, Amy tails Pilgrim to his hotel, and Madani and Dumont have a violent confrontation.
This episode was the perfect way to make some confrontations explode in preparations for the finale.
Right off the bat we have Pilgrim coming after Frank, and shows his impressive dedication and abilities by managing to knock them from the road. The following moment, while serious in that Madani now has cause to arrest Pilgrim, also made me laugh with how he was able to sneak around and steal her car. Billy has no actual confrontations this episode, but it is good to have him take somewhat of a backseat to ramp up things with Pilgrim. Billy seems in a perfect position, so he's just tidying up and leaving at this point, and the way to get him back in the action is to drag him back down. This is what happens at the end of the episode, after Madani's suspicions about Dumont cause them to go head-to-head. I'm glad to be seeing a lot more of Pilgrim's abilities as time has gone on, in a way making him similar to Frank in my mind. Just like the Punisher, we've seen Pilgrim take ambushes, cuts, and now bullets, and keep moving forward like a monstrous machine. Though he's been having doubts, his dedication to finish things is impressive, and you can tell he's struggling to keep his cool but still does so. The scene with Curtis shows off the acting chops of both Josh Stewart and Jason R. Moore, with plenty of tension as each man chooses their moves carefully. As soon as it starts, Pilgrim is quiet for a bit, and takes immediate control with his gun and knowing what Curtis will try to do. The banter between the two, while obviously calculated, is smooth and shows the intelligence of both men, with Curtis quickly covering for the others and Pilgrim trying to maintain his cool and not result to a more-violent interrogation. I like that Dumont has lost a bit of her own cool, slipping up by calling Madani, though the reason for their later confrontation seemed dumb on Madani's part to me. It's been interesting to see Dumont, while obviously able to stay calm and lie, is quick to become paranoid, especially wondering if Frank would target her without reason. Frank's intelligence was excellent as always, using what was at first a disguise to track down David Schultz and take him back to the trailer. On that note, man do I feel terrible for David Schultz. With no knowledge of what's going on, he's being punished for his family's actions. Out of nowhere, a terrifying, injured man is suddenly assaulting him and demanding information about people and events he doesn't know, and his words mean nothing. At the same time that Frank shows intelligence before all this and during the interrogation, it frustrated me a bit that he wouldn't change his questioning a bit to see if Schultz was really as ignorant as he claimed. Of course, he is the Punisher and it's what he tends to do, but I was surprised he didn't change his tactics for a while, or that Curtis didn't step in. Despite this, I loved the action of this episode, and like that Mahoney is beginning to understand the magnitude of what's going on. With Billy sure to return to the fray and Pilgrim and Frank getting closer to their goals, there's quite a few ciolent encounters to come.
