Seeing no alternative, Midoriya is forced to fight Bakugou, who wants to know why All Might would choose someone he considered weak. After a recap of why Bakugou called Midoriya out, the latter tries to back out of a fight, suggesting they wait for a training session. Bakugou coolly replies the teachers wouldn't let them go all out, and, telling him to guard if he doesn't want to get hurt, attacks. \After an explosion, Bakugou pretends to feint a blast from his right hand, catching Midoriya off-guard, and a nearby robot identifies and reports them to Aizawa. Eraserhead heads to Ground Beta, but a visitor stops him outside his building as Midoriya tries in vain to end things with Bakugou. Bakugou brings up their past when Midoriya used to follow him no matter what and attacks again, only for Midoriya to finally counter, knocking him down. Midoriya checks to see if he's okay and Bakugou becomes angry again, telling Midoriya not to feel sorry for him. In a role reversal, Bakugou becomes emotional and demands to know why All Might would choose a weak person like Midoriya to be his successor. Midoriya is shocked to learn that Bakugou blames himself for All Might's retirement, believing his weakness led to him getting captured and All Might's fight against All For One. Deciding he's the only one Bakugou can work his emotions out on, Midoriya agrees to fight, realizing after landing a kick that he can test his shoot style on Bakugou. Bakugou attacks again and, knowing Midoriya tries to read his opponent's movements based on what he's learned over time. Midoirya realizes this as well but also that he has still grown stronger, and Bakugou attacks again, accusing him of having always looked down on him when they were younger and he was behind. Midoriya is surprised to learn that Bakugou saw their interactions this way, saying he was always watching because he admired him. Because Bakugou was always so powerful, he served as a source of inspiration for Midoriya to get stronger, since he was closer than All Might. Emotional, Midoriya momentarily loses control and uses 8% rather than 5% of his power, not realizing he had strengthened his body enough to handle more. Charging forward, Midoriya is able to surprise Bakugou with both speed and power, breaking his guard and quickly spinning around to deliver a kick to the head that Bakugou barely dodges and counters. Midoriya surprisingly begins spitting insults, noting he does so while angry during a fight because Bakugou does, and to Midoriya he symbolizes victory.
As the confrontation leads to better understanding of each other and their relationship, the two come to an end with their fight and get a talking to from those above them. While the show has given us emotional moments before, like Midoriya learning he's quirkless, or All Might's fight against All For One. This was definitely a huge moment for both characters, however, and you can feel all the history between the two in Bakugou's pained words. Midoriya has grown throughout the series, but Bakugou is a stubborn boy who resisted changing himself at all, because of the praise he received as a kid. All this time it has seemed as though Bakugou simply saw himself as better than everyone, and actually this led to him having an inferiority complex, worrying that everyone is in fact better than him. As is common with child prodigies, Bakugou was so praised as a child that he is now frustrated with his lack of improvement despite still being powerful. The first time he almost found out the secret, Bakugou was told he can't expect to "level up" as fast as Midoriya, since he's already so strong and the latter isn't. As everyone catches up to him, it makes him feel like he's not improving even when he does, and he can't fathom anyone even being as good as him. These feelings got the worst after the Kamino Incident, since like Midoriya, he blames himself for All Might having to retire. This is a good way of showing that he and Midoriya are actually similar in some ways, but with different reasons leading them to their conclusions. As we've seen before, they both idolized All Might as kids, but while Midoriya looked up to him for always saving people with a smile and encouraging them, Bakugou was motivated by the belief that All Might never loses. While it led to them both being strong, it also led to problems, as Midoriya became so obsessed with saving people he constantly put himself at risk, while Bakugou's desire to always win caused his inferiority complex. It's interesting in this way that All Might essentially had a somewhat negative effect on them both that he is now working to correct, as they went too far with what they saw him as. In this area, it's good to see All Might himself improving, doing a better job understanding that while he was a great hero, he hasn't been a good teacher and needs to do a better job. This fight was somewhat of a middle ground on simply beautiful, impressive action like the Noumu fight, and having emotion like All Might's last battle. Both characters are giving it their all in this fight, showing off moves and techniques they've learned with gorgeous animation. Midoriya's 8% attack epitomizes this, as he seamlessly transitions from his initial kick into another by spinning around, electricity sparking around him. It's so impressive to watch them go at it, and at the same time you know the kind of emotions that have led up to such a confrontation. For Midoriya, the fight seems rather pointless other than giving Bkaugou a way to vent, but for the latter, it's quite a breakdown. Ever since he was a kid he was great, then suddenly Midoriya started catching up to and beating him, and the last straw was failing the exam while Midoriya passed. With what he's learning at U.A. and Midoriya getting stronger, Bakugou has been bound to have such a reaction, but here on out will likely change. Before there was no reason to, but now there is plenty, and we get to see an interesting interaction between the two at the end of the episode that hints at a good future. With a preview also hinting at the entrance of some great characters, things are also about to get a lot more complicated in the hero world.
