The Princess Alliance is only able to fend the Horde off as the Whispering Woods thaw, and Entrapta makes advancements with the First Ones tech.
Despite some rocky maneuvers and teamwork, the Princess Alliance succeeds in clearing some Horde robots out of the thawing Whispering Woods.
Frosta has lightened up, and She-Ra has learned how to turn her sword into numerous things, even a mug, but she faces a surprise attack from Catra, who learns she at times transforms the sword into certain things on accident. Glimmer summons her staff, and Frosta, excited to see the magic but not considering her ally's abilities, destroys a robot before Glimmer, advising her on where to strike. She-Ra stops herself from hitting Catra, and it's revealed she's in a training simulation. She asks why Catra was so mean, and Light Hope says it's intended for accuracy. As Perfuma laments that the woods can't regrow because of constant attacks, Frosta irritates Bow by smashing a destroyed robot he was investigating. Adora vents about having not gotten better after a month of training and Catra being able to push her buttons. LH, misunderstanding some of her words, says she was actually worse this time, and relates that she also has buttons. Light Hope says Adora must master her emotions or she'll fail like the previous She-Ra and begins another simulation, in which the blade of Adora's sword instantly vanishes. The Horde is simultaneously in their own simulation, where one robot has an enormous, dark hologram of She-Ra over it. When Kyle goes down, Catra explains they failed to realize She-Ra is strong, but slow and easy to manipulate. She restarts the simulation and easily dispatches the robot, then orders the others to clean up the mess and try again. Catra pays a visit to Entrapt and Scorpia, discovering the former has had things from her castle delivered to their base. They watch footage of the Alliance successfully warding off their robots, and while Catra shrugs that they'll keep the princesses busy with those while they take over the world, Entrapta grabs a piece of First Ones tech, saying she has a better idea.
Adora exits the base and returns to Bright Moon on Swift Wind. Glimmer excitedly tells her about being more powerful and taking out numerous bots, but Bow interjects that they are stuck doing so over and over.
Glimmer says they can't just let the Horde gain ground, but he points out they can't keep doing this forever, and is less-than impressed when Adora tries to showcase her ability to transform her sword and simply produces a pitcher. Frosta pops up, scaring Glimmer, to suggest turning the sword into a dagger, and when Glimmer tries to get out of seeing her, she says they have a war meeting. There, Perfuma and Mermista butt heads, and Glimmer is ecstatic upon seeing her aunt Casta, who is happy to be there but gets a cold welcome from Angella. The meeting begins with Swift Wind saying that although the Horde has taken land in the west, the Rebellion re-took Thaymore with Netossa and Spinnerella's help. Glimmer happily reports the situation in the woods, but Perfuma suggests the princesses try to bring their powers together like they did in the Battle of Bright Moon, so they can heal the foliage faster. Bow firmly states that they can't keep going as they are, using resources while the Horde just sends bots. He suggests capturing an intact bot so he can program a kill-switch that will wipe them all out. Pleased with the suggestion, Angella orders Glimmer to secure a bot for him, and when Frosta tries to tag along, Glimmer tells her to help Netossa and Spinnerella.
Catra goes to Horak with her success, but says they could be doing more: Entrapta introduces "Emily's Kid Sister (KDS)," a bot with power to rival a princess.
Its regenerative abilities impress Hordak, and when Entrapta explains she only had enough First Ones tech for four robots, Catra says she knows how to get more. Back in the woods, Glimmer pairs off with Bow and Adora to go east and search for a robot, while Perfuma and Mermista go west and Swift Wind watches from the sky. Glimmer is angered when Frosta shows up, saying she can't just disobey orders, but Frosta refuses to budge and dislikes when Glimmer sends her with the others. Glimmer's group finds one of the advanced bots, and Adora believes it's "just another Horde bot" despite it not attacking the woods, but it easily sends her flying. Bow realizes it's learning when it counters Glimmer's teleporting attack, so Adora transforms into She-Ra, but it easily repairs all the damage the inflicts. The other robots arrive, followed by Frosta pummeling one, but it tosses her off a cliff, forcing Glimmer to teleport and save her. After scanning She-Ra, Bow, and Swift Wind, the robots leave and Glimmer returns with Frosta, followed by Perfuma and Mermista showing up. Glimmer chastises Frosta for her actions, saying this isn't a game and they call could've been hurt, but stops after saying Frosta needs to stay out of their way. Tearing up, Frosta turns and runs away. Bow beats himself up for his failed plan and attempt to become the rebellion's tech master, but She-Ra reminds him he's the only one who came up with a plan. She suggests they formulate a plan as a group, and they realize the bots weren't after them, but went in the same direction: toward the beacon. Believing she knows what they're after and how to stop them, She-Ra finally notices Frosta's disappearance, so Glimmer goes to find her. After a chat with Frosta, the group takes on the enhanced robots, leading to a discovery for Bow, and Catra pays a visit to an old friend.
I like how this episode is kicking off season 2 with a lot of action and giving us a new problem with the Horde robots.
As it is anyway, She-Ra was already more powerful than the typical robot, making her more than a match for the Rebellion. The group needs to have a possible threat, otherwise there's no tension and it gets boring, because there's nothing challenging She-Ra's power. By introducing the powered robot, the group is in a dangerous position again, because even She-Ra has a hard time with them. They've said they struggle to even protect the Whispering Woods, so you would think She-Ra returning could turn the tide, but now there's an enemy she can't easily beat. Much like with the Battle of Bright Moon, where winning the battle wasn't necessary to get close to victory, the Horde is in a position where they can lose forces and win. The Rebellion has evidently just faced robots at this point, and Catra seems unconcerned with losing them, especially with Entrapta on their side, so this means more robots will come for quite some time. In this time, the soldiers like Kyle and Lonnie can improve, making them assets on the battlefield against the Rebellion, especially since they're practicing to fight She-Ra. There's also the fact that after a motnh of training, Adora is still struggling to figure out her powers, which seem fickle. It seems like she isn't able to heal yet, and although she's now transforming her sword in more ways than she used to, most of the time it's unintentional. Turning it into a flail or a shield, but a lot of the time it's turning into things like a cup or an umbrella. Of course sometimes it turns into something random but is usefl, which happens when they take on the advanced robots. With her powers still uncontrolled, She-Ra can at times be a liability on the battlefield, and as Light Hope told her, failing to control her abilities and emotions could lead her down the same path her predecessor took. Then there's the alliance, where despite the princesses working together, they constantly have issues but bury them and continue on. Being able to succeed despite these issues is good for the alliance, but the tensions are likely to boil over at some point, especially given how much Perfuma is suppressing when it comes to Mermista. One thing I adored about this episode was how Bow is a serious character throughout most of it, rather than just joking and going along with the tough situation. Though he isn't always serious, Bow has been the one to be serious a lot of the time, and it's always effective, especially given how smart he is. He is planning on becoming the Rebellion's tech master, and we've of course seen some trick arrows he uses, so it's good to have him think of tech and strategy. Basically what he brings up with Angella is something I'd say the entire group has been thinking, but was afraid to say: they're not in a good spot. The Alliance might be holding, and they're able to fight off the Horde, but their foes are still advancing, while they grow tired. He comes up with an excellent strategy as well, and having him be able to counter the robots makes him a sort of equivalent to Entrapta for the Rebellion. It's strange seeing Frosta behave so joyfully, as until now we've only seen her be serious, but there's obviously a lot of pressure on her to be serious considering she took over ruling at such a young age. There's a funny relationship going on between her and Glimmer that the latter doesn't seem to understand when giving orders, with Frosta behaving similarly to her. It's much like when a person gets a younger sibling, and shares the faults they did, but the person fails to remember they had tehse faults. Fitting since they're in a rebellion, Glimmer has always rebelled against Angella, and now Frosta is rebelling against and not listening to her orders. It's obviously not a matter of malevolence, but rather Frosta just not being used to having such adventures, especially with other people. Glimmer is now in more of a position of power, and having learned her lessons from the mistakes she made, she doesn't want Frosta making mistakes like them. We don't see much of the Horde this episode, but Catra is also developing to her new position of power, and is impressing Hordak for now. Unfortunately, while Catra is succeeding in that they make dents in the Rebellion, she seems similar to Shadow Weaver in being unable to achieve a total victory. For now, making dents is good enough, because it's better than what was happening, but if it continues, someone like Hordak is bound to demand more. Catra is smart, and always seems rightfully nervous around Hordak, so I would think she understands she could face a similar fate to Shadow Weaver's without results. This episode gets us right back into the action to begin season two, and with both sides improving and pressure mounting on Catra to get results, the battles to come in this war are going to become even bigger spectacles.
