Episode 20 for season 3 gives fans a possibly unwanted break to advertise for the upcoming My Hero Academia film. The episode kicks off in a way that might confuse viewers initially, with Midoriya and an again-powered All Might wearing similar yellow shirts. Midoriya is confused, knowing the exam was just taking place, but his mentor replies that they are taking a break to tell a love story. The series rewinds to before the summer camp, and we see All Might, Cementoss, and Midnight watching a news report about the former's rise to fame. The channel reveals that in his youth, All Might studied abroad in America, where he met his friend David Shield, a scientist famous for making support items for heroes. Meanwhile, Aizawa tells a group consisting of Midoriya, Bakugou, Iida, Uraraka, and Tsuyu that they'll be taking part in a special training class. Stating it'll be harder than a normal class, asthey will take on a hypothetical villain and put their detective skills to the test to figure out the cause of a crime scene. Aizawa takes them to Ground Beta, where he explains the situation is a villain holed up in a jewelry store with hostages, and refuses to answer any questions. As the group slowly tries to plan, Bakugou tells Uraraka to float to a window, where she can look in and communicate the number of villains and hostages without alerting said villain of her presence. As Todoroki gets the villain, played by All Might, on the phone to learn his demands, Uraraka finds there is only the single villain and three hostages, played by Midnight, Cementoss, and Present Mic. All Might, watching the doors, says he wants everyone to leave, and tells the heroes they'd better hurry or people will start dying. Impatient as everyone struggles to plan again, Bakugou rushes in, blowing the doors open. The group is shocked to find All Might's body stabbed when the smoke clears. Finding a knife, Iida declares it had to have been a hostage if the villain was working alone, but Midoriya says they need to interview the hostages first. While Cementoss explains he was the clerk the villain attacked, Present Mic was shopping when the villain attacked and Midnight arrived to shop after the attack and was taken hostage. While Midoriya and Uraraka confirm Midnight and Present Mic were shopping by checking their wallets, Bakugou becomes impatient again and says a hostage clearly killed the villain for the jewelry.
Tsu and Todoroki, however, point out killing the villain in the store would be risky and the jewels are still sitting nearby. With Iida having searched the building and confirming the villain worked alone, Midoriya begins to put the pieces together upon wondering why the villain barricaded himself in the store. The remainder of the episode focuses on Midoriya's explanation of what happened, followed by a surprise bit of comedy and an email for All Might. Very little happened in this episode, since it was written as filler. Coming before the camp, the kids haven't even been through as many rough experiences as they have by the exam. However, the filler still has it's purpose given the upcoming film for the series. From previously released trailers, fans know the movie is about All Might, Midoriya, and others taking a trip where the former sees his friend David. By introducing this friend in an episode, we get at least a bit of info before going into the movie, and the kind of relationship he has with All Might. It also confirms the timing of the trip, as having All Might go into his muscular form would be quite confusing given his current condition. In a way it's seems ridiculous to advertise for the movie with an episode, but at the same time it's not like they're trying to be subtle about it. Rather than try to sneak in things about seeing the movie, we're getting some background and flatout being informed of the film. In terms of the actual characters, we of course don't see too much given the episode is a filler, but we see more intelligence from Midoriya, who even gets props from Aizawa in the end, and a surprisingly smart moment from Bakugou with Uraraka before he goes back to his typical explosive impatience. There's not really too much else to say about this episode. I personally enjoyed it despite it being a filler; it's not nearly as bad as the filler arcs from some shows, like Naruto or Bleach. I do know, however, that plenty of fans probably weren't happy about getting away from the action for a silly episode. If you're fine with the exam taking a back seat for an episode, you'll probably be like me and enjoy this for what it is, but if not you'll probably be irritated. Next week we'll pick right back up at the exam, and finally get to see how things go now that Gang Orca is an extra threat.
