Now it's time for a trip to Foster's, where Bloo's attempt to prank the others lands him in some hot water with a zombie problem. At Foster's, Bloo, dressed as an executioner, ties Mac to a bed, as the latter knows it's a better idea that he stay away from sugar. For any who might not know why, Mac's big problem is that he goes crazy when he has sugar. In the episode when he gets some, he goes on a rampage acting like a wild animal, and they have to rein him in. Bloo reveals he doesn't care as much about candy; he just wants to prank, since he's given the option. He brings out his prank for the year: a can of "peanut brittle," but Mac notes that he can't open it since he's tied up, and says Bloo pulls the same prank every year. Bloo locks Mac in the room and heads out, failing to get Eduardo with his prank, as the friend is too scared of Halloween monsters. Downstairs, Wilt and Coco also turn down the prank, continuing Mac's explanation of a poor result the previous year. The tall friend tries his own prank on some trick-or-treaters, letting a fake arm pop off, but they don't react so he gives them candy and sends them away. Frankie comes downstairs to organize the friends for trick-or-treating, and she and Madam Foster turn down his prank as well. After an announcement, Bloo decides to prank Herriman, who agrees to open the peanut brittle. When the paper snakes fly out, he suddenly collapses on his desk, and Bloo dances around until he realizes Herriman is still immobile. He at first takes pride in his prank's strength, then tries to wake the rabbit, to no avail, and fails to give him mouth-to-mouth. Bloo decides to get rid of the evidence and wheels Herriman out, and when the rabbit's chair slips from his hands, he stops it with his prank can and props Herriman up before everyone else. He pretends to be the headmaster and takes him to another area, only to accidentally drop him down the stairs and have to pretend to be him again. Bloo tells a confused Frankie that Herriman plans to show him a new way to fold his shirts, and she becomes distracted with the friends, allowing Bloo to sneak out. He poorly "buries" Herriman with a bit of dirt and leaves to trick-or-treat, and Herriman suddenly raises a hand. Bloo walks through the empty house and finds his can, noting that he needs to be careful, and becomes frightened at odd noises. The front door wiggles so he heads to a back area, where Madam Foster returns for her wig, relieving him until Herriman jumps up and bites her. Bloo rushes off screaming, ending up in a closet with a terrified Eduardo, and tells him about the zombie situation. The now-zombiefied Madam Foster somehow gets in with them, so they rush out and again encounter Herriman, and they have to leave behind Eduardo's toy Paco. They dash to Wilt and Coco and blurt out everything about the zombies, confusing the duo, and Wilt turns to handle some trick-or-treaters he successfully scares. When he turns back, the zombies are there and manage to get him, so the others run again, barricading themselves in a room. Bloo searches for weapons, arming them with miscellaneous objects. Coco notices Herriman and Madam Foster in the closet, but the disappear, and when Wilt also appears, Eduardo grabs the others and jumps through the ceiling to the roof. They start climbing down but Bloo remembers Mac is still tied up and decides they can't leave without his best friend, heading back inside. The trio hides for a time, but they hear Frankie and head downstairs. She's already been zombiefied, along with everyone else, and Coco is taken as they escape. The episode finishes up on Bloo's desperate attempt to rescue Mac and escape their zombiefied friends. This episode definitely came at a point where this show was a lot more enjoyable than it eventually became.
I'm always willing to admit that this show kind of lost me after a time, specifically because Bloo was turned into a self-centered jerk. Aside from this making him unpleasant to watch, it always made me wonder why the Fosters would put up with his attitude when they were agreeing to let him stay there forever if Mac would visit daily. This episode must have come before this happened, as Bloo, while obviously a bit of a jerk and a prankster, decided he couldn't just leave Mac behind. Having his prank go wrong is a good way to both show him he's done something wrong and sets up the situation, although he at first doesn't take it seriously. His attempts to bring Herriman back are funny enough, and it gets better when he has to pretend Herriman is fine. The episode can definitely be creepy as a kid's show in some comical ways, with the zombies popping up out of nowhere, though the joke of him and Eduardo screaming at each other goes on for too long. Perhaps the best part of this special comes from all the reference costumes Craig McCracken tossed in. McCracken had done this before, with an episode where the characters of The Big Lebowski appear in a bowling alley, and the references are full force here as well. Kids can easily recognize the obvious ones: Frankie is dressed as Blossom from The Powerpuff Girls, another character, who at first is as well, later changes to Bubbles, and in one flashback Madam Foster is dressed as Yoda. A less obvious one that I didn't even notice until this watch-through comes from the flashbacks as well, with Frankie as Tank Girl. Another reference appears in the title itself, "A Nightmare on Wilson Way," a callback to Freddy's Nightmare on Elm Street. Mac's condition adds an entertaining aspect in that he is basically treated as a werewolf since he can't have sugar and they don't even want to risk it. It of course also gives Bloo a reason to return to the house, and gives things some tension as he tries to save his friend. Obviously you won't get scared out of your wits watching this special, but it's a fun lookback at a former popular show that you might appreciate more now as I did.
