With the parley looming, Ward gets Danny to invite Davos and Joy to dinner, and Colleen makes progress on the Choi situation as Mary tries to help Danny out. Colleen wakes to find Danny washing his bloody hoodie, and she learns he just got back and hasn't slept, to her displeasure. He explains the blood is from a Hatchet the Tigers shot, and she wonders about how well his idea of having them reach an agreement will work. Colleen worries that using the fist too much will cause problems, but he assures her he's only deterring crime in the rough areas until the parley. He tries to change the conversation to Choi, but she pressed how he hasn't been home for days and has overworked himself since Matt's "death." Danny argues that he's just defending the city like Matt asked him to, and she suggests he's looking for a purpose now that K'un L'un has fallen and he defeated the Hand like he was supposed to. He assures Colleen that he's okay, and she reveals that Mary called, but he brushes it off, saying she means well. At an NA meeting, Ward shows off his cash and accuses the group of telling Joy about him, demanding that they respect his privacy. Insulted, one man says they didn't and his sponsor, Bethany, tries to get him to open up about Joy, but he simply insults everyone and storms out. He meets with Danny, who applauds him for attending the meetings, and shocks him with the news about Joy and Davos partnering. Thinking they could be plotting against Rand, Ward suggests talking to Davos, only to learn about their conflict. Danny suggests they meet to hash things out, and Ward realizes they could essentially trick the duo into a dinner meeting there at Danny's. Danny's hesitancy leads to an surprisingly open and friendly moment between the two where Ward reveals being upset because Joy hasn't even talked to him about the issue, so Danny agrees. He is disgusted when Ward suggests they pretend he's showing up coincidentally, but agrees to do so when Ward points out that Joy might not show if she knew the truth. Danny calls Colleen, at Choi's shop, and she gives the okay just as she finds a back door and breaks in. As she looks around, the street kid from before, BB, shows up wondering what she's doing, and his words about Choi loving a chair she's on gets her curious. Taped underneath she finds money, which BB demands half of, and a logbook written in Chinese. Joy meets with a woman, Sofia Rios, about producing some sort of solar-powered device she planned, impressing her with the news she left Rand. Joy assures Rios that a factory she knows of can get things done in a week, and seems to win her over with the confidence that she'll agree. Davos enters when Sofio leaves, complimenting Joy for her business savvy, but is annoyed to learn of Danny's invitation and turns it down. Having pointed out that Ward had to have told him, Joy says it will benefit them to convince Danny is their friend and prevent him or Ward from digging into her files. Davos thinks it's just dinner, but Joy explains there's always more to "dinner." Colleen, walking back with BB, can't decipher the apparently numeric code or the Chinese. BB says Choi is most likely a dead man, as he probably went to the cops and wouldn't survive if he snitched. She tells him to come to Bayard next time he follows her, but he tells her money talks and leave with what she found at Choi's. Danny, just after getting home, notices an envelope slipped under his door, and rushes outside to find Mary running away. He catches her on the street, but she is fidgety and coming up with excuses like that she should have thrown it away. She says how his kindness was the first of its kind she'd found in a while, and when he points out how ludicrous the situation is, she reveals he "could say" she's in trouble. Revealing he's being watched by someone called Walker, she suggests he look in the folder, where he finds the photos of himself and Colleen that she was looking at in the previous episode. When he looks up, she's already gone, so he heads back to the apartment and shows them to Colleen, who worries that Mary may have put cams in the apartment. Danny believes Mary herself had no ill intentions due to her fear, and says it could just be a tabloid story about how rich boy Danny Rand is moving boxes. He tells Colleen he wants to keep his promise to Ward and keep the dinner on despite her wanting to cancel it, revealing he's been thinking about how she said he's working too hard, and wants to take a break. As they set up that night, Colleen is frustrated to learn of Ward's deception but invites in the cold Davos and fake-smiled Joy. Despite the awkwardness, Joy tells Davos all is going well and begins giving fake compliments, to Colleen's irritation. Danny asks how the two met, and they spin a fake story about meeting romantically in Paris while Colleen and Danny listen uncomfortably. Dany invites Davos out back to the grill where he brings up the fight, and Davos says he's just always had a temper. They reminisce about K'un L'un and how they're different from those who've never been there, and they seem to reconnect with small talk. Joy is confused when Colleen does a common check on her pasta's readiness by throwing it at a pillar, and irritates her with cracks about her domestic-ism. When Joy asks about the reason for Danny suggesting the dinner, Colleen scrambles together the excuse that he saw both her and Davos recently and probably just wanted to reconnect, but Joy doesn't buy it. A problem with the meatballs Danny grilled causes another crack from Joy, and he and Colleen share news of the cold talks with each other. Danny reveals Ward never answered his phone, and we see he's having a bit of a meltdown in his car, to his driver's confusion, and has him go to his NA meeting spot.
As the talk at dinner becomes more awkward, Joy takes a jab at how Colleen isn't teaching anymore, and Davos insults her for what he perceives as weakness. Finally done with the snide remarks all evening, Collen snaps at everyone to start actually talking. Danny tries with Davos, who says it's not the time, and Colleen angrily says they don't always have to wait until their in a holy place in K'un L'un, causing Davos to storm off to the bathroom. Colleen moves on to Joy, who is surprisingly open about how she honestly doesn't hate Danny; rather she hates what happened to her life when he came back. While the two debate whether he and Ward were in the right for not telling her, Davos finds the photos from Mary and urges Joy to leave. Frustrated, Danny reveals that Ward was supposed to show up, and we see the latter is talking to Bethany. While he apologizes, the dinner hits its heated breaking point, and as Davos and Joy deal with a problem, Danny and Colleen face one of their own with the parley. There was a lot less action this episode compared to the previous, where we opened up on a gruesome murder and had multiple fight scenes. A brreak from action is needed now and then, though, and this episode definitely does so in an effective way, showing that Danny is stretching himself thin. Despite his roughness this season, we also get a lot more human moments from Ward, as he more willingly admits when he's wrong and apologizes, and even has a joking and laughing moment with Danny. Even with the dinner having gone disastrously, his interest in talking to Joy and in learning why she wanted the particular investments seems likely to cause issue for her in the future, which she knows since she said she doesn't want him digging around. Unlike how Ward is making an effort to change, Danny continues to be as naive about things, not worrying at all about the pictures Mary gave him or who "Walker" is. He seems so fixated on just honoring Matt's memory that he is getting tunnel vision about the gangs and the parley, as otherwise he would realize there is soemthing clearly going on with Joy and Davos, and that the pictures are an issue. Fortunately like Luke Cage in his second season, he has a supportive girlfriend trying to help him, and also fortunately unilke Luke, he seems to actually be heeding her advice during arguments. Danny might be smart and getting better at fighting, but Colleen has more common sense than he does, taking things cautiously and being concerned about problematic situations like the photos. Joy felt kind of ridiculous in this episode, as at first she showed her business intelligence and understanding of risk assessment, but at the party she made a poor attempt at pretending everything was fine. She's the one who stressed making Danny think she and Davos were his friends, and yet at the party she gave clearly fabricated stories and constantly talked in a condescending way, especially toward Colleen.] Mary becomes more interesting, as I had thought it was her using her other personality's camera who was stalking Danny, having become obsessed with him. The truth is more complicated, however, and shows us a character who will definitely be dangerous to deal with in the future. With that threat out there and the parley becoming problematic while Davos and Joy take steps in their plan, Danny's got a full plate if he wants to honor Matt's request.
