It's time for another solo addition to Dead by Daylight, and this time it's the cult classic hero Ash Williams from the Evil Dead series!
Just after the latest chapter release, the folks from Dead by Daylight are giving us the DLC Paragraph III: Ash vs Evil Dead.
As "paragraphs" rather than "chapters" for the game, these are much shorter, giving just one new character rather than a chapter's new survivor, killer, and map. The first one gave us Left 4 Dead's Bill Overbeck to the survivors, while the second added The Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Leatherface as a killer. This time around, we're getting Ashley "Ash" Joanna Williams, Bruce Campbell's comedy horror icon from the cult classic Evil Dead series. In the original series, Ash discovered the Necronomicon Ex-Mortis, which unleashed evil and forced him to kill his friends and sever his right hand. Since his dark adventures that included his trusty shotgun and the chainsaw he had replaced his hand with, Ash became quite a deadbeat hanging out in bars. Thirty years later, he accidentally brought evil back trying to impress some women, and teaming up with others including his long-lost daughter, he became a hero. A fight left him dying, and he was transported to the future, but his troubles weren't over yet, as a voice called him to a public locker room. There, he found a fling from his past, but she transformed into a decrepit creature and attacked; he managed to get the upper hand but stopped himself from killing her. Instead, he demanded a portal back to his friends, but fumbled the incantation, and as they bickered about the proper wording, a portal opened that sucked the demon away and transported Ash to the Entity's realm.
True to his origin, Ash Williams of this game lacks a normal right hand, instead sporting a mechanical wonder that was crafted for him.
Now it would've been pretty funny to allow Ash his chainsaw while facing the killers, but obviously this wouldn't have worked for the game's dynamic. Something I find funny about Ash's setup is that while he's considered the "lone wolf," his abilities can be used greatly for himself or to aid others. First up is Flip Flop, which is an idea I've definitely heard suggested plenty: when you're in the "dying" state on the ground, half of how much you recovered goes into your wiggle bar when the killer picks you up. Similar to Unbreakable, which allows you to pick yourself up, this is one that will discourage slugging, as survivors can develop a wiggle bar before being carried. Second is Buckle Up, an altruistic perk that allows you and a survivor you heal from the dying state to see the killer for 4/5/6 seconds. Another perk that discourages slugging, this ability will help you and the other survivor decide which way they should run if the killer returns; if you're the type who likes chases, you could even try to head for the killer after the heal. Finally is what I'd say is Ash's most popular perk: Mettle of Man, which prevents you from being put into the dying state from injured if you've taken three hits. This is a great perk for people who tend to be in chases or take hits for other survivors, and can be later implemented in multiple ways. If you're getting chased, this perk will most likely activate after your first hook, as two hits will down a person; this will help make your second chase longer. The process can be sped up if you heal, particularly if you have an insta-heal. You can take three hits before your first hook, which will help in following moments. This ability comes in handy when you get unhooked or unhook another person, as either way you can take an extra hit, similar to Borrowed Time. In his recent video, YouTube Monto tested out using just these perks, and late in the video determines the ability stays active if you heal yourself. With this in mind, it even makes healed rescues safer, especially going to the basement, as you can take an extra hit to help your teammate and yourself. The only downside to this method is you have to be in the injured state for it to work, so an insta-down from maybe a chainsaw wielder would counter the perk.
I haven't gotten to play DBD in a while, but news that Ash was coming out made me incredibly excited, more so than the last chapters.
Ash is such an entertaining character, and has a "cool guy" vibe to him. Plus, how can you not love the mechanical hand, especially when it has goofy customizations? Adding to the greatness is the fact that Bruce Campbell reprised the classic role for the game, rather than someone else giving Ash their voice. Ash's design is cool and he has some interesting perks, though I do feel like he's going to get nerfed soon enough, especially Mettle of Man. As it is, people often complain about the game favoring survivors, and a perk that feels like a strong alternative Borrowed Time will likely be frustrating to deal with. I would assume the perk will be changed so that while you don't get downed from a hit, you'll enter the deep wound state, like with Borrowed Time or Legion's ability. Giving Ash the "easy" ranking definitely makes sense, as he has some good abilities and there is some versatility to them to help you survive or help you save others. The timing of Ash coming out seemed strange to me, since we just had the latest chapter, but the only complaint I'd have about this is if more bugs were added. To be honest, it'd be sillier to think no bugs were added with this, as it seems like anytime something new is added, something else breaks. Occasionally this can lead to hilarity (my personal favorite is the sliding glitch after throwing pallets), but most often there are frustrating and/or game breaking issues. Especially right now as the developers are working on the matchmaking system and having plenty of complaints, new bugs would be a massive problem. I've actually wondered if Ash was supposed to come out a bit later, because recently players started posting images they saw on console where his perks had already been added, before he was announced. Whether they meant to add him or not, though, he's a cool addition to the game and I know a lot of people are going to start maining him.
