Scientists have discovered an atmosphere surrounding an Earth-like planet, according to a BBC article.
The planet, designated GJ 1132b, was first announced in 2015 and is 39 light-years away. At 370 degrees Celsius, or 698 degrees Fahrenheit, the planet is far too hot to sustain human life, and its atmosphere is comprised of either water, methane, or both. Despite there being no chance humans could survive on the planet, scientists said there is now a better chance at finding other planets with atmospheres that could be housing lifeforms. With this discovery having been made, fans of space and space travel are surely excited about the news. Even though this planet can't house life, perhaps others could, and in that case we would really have a breakthrough situation. Astronomer Marek Kukula said that this means technology should be able to detect more planets in the not-too-distant future, according to the article. I personally have never loved space as much as some do, but I find the situation interesting and like a technological step forward. Whether there is life outside Earth or not is an age-old question, and it would be incredible to find another planet that is hosting life. We also clearly must have at least better understanding than we did even months ago if scientists are able to learn so much about a planet without even going to it.
