While Danny struggles with his emotions, Walker tries to figure out her past and Joy searches for the means to defeat Davos.
We open on the differing training methods of Colleen vs. Davos: while Colleen is urging Danny to stay calm and let Davos wear himself out, Davos is teaching his students to be merciless and go for any weakness they find.
Telling Danny about the help they have spreading word of Davos, Colleen notes he has healed quickly, but believes it's due to him and his adaptability, not the brace. Danny notes her staff use doesn't feel like Hand technique, and she tells him about her grandfather, who would train her and give riddles if she had questions. He had told her a warrior must know what they're fighting for, and Danny, who fought for the Iron Fist in K'un-Lun, is now fighting for everything important to him. He knows Davos is his emotional weakness, and Colleen tells him he'll have to think and choose what to do, rather than just feel and react. They get a call on their tipline that directs them to Yangsi Gonshi accountant James Wong, and Colleen tells Danny to come along, considering it "field training." At the location, Chen asks Davos to help, sure they're in the right place, but Davos notes he will never trust the man since he has turned on foes and allies alike. Inside, Danny and Colleen have arrived already, and though Liu wants to stay and fight, they are able to convince he, Mrs. Yang, and Liu to escape out the back. As Davos busts into the room, Danny keeps himself from running to fight, but though they get outside, Chen sees and confronts the group; Colleen chooses to fight him. She holds him off until the others arrive with Liu's car, escaping as Davos arrives; he accuses Chen of backstabbing hi until the latter notices one of Colleen's fliers.
Walker wakes in her apartment, and while irritated, she watches Mary's video, but is surprised when Mary says she "got them out of that hole" in Sokovia.
While she replays the audio, we see back then she woke outside the hole covered in blood and surrounded by bodies as two soldiers arrived. She says they came to kill her and she doesn't know what happened after that, but as the soldiers inspect a bloody machete, she assures them she didn't do it. Joy visits Davos's "dojo," where BB becomes annoyed during training, and she intercepts him as he tries to leave, looking at one of Colleen's fliers. After taking the flier, she convinces BB to go back inside, pointing out that leaving, especially with the flier would immediately put him on Davos's list. At Bayard, Danny and Colleen see Mrs. Yang talking to Hatchet and Tiger leaders, and go in when Chung says they need to take their business elsewhere. Knowing the Triads plan to retaliate, Danny and Colleen ask for time for their own plan to save lives, but Yang turns them down, citing her need to learn from her mistakes. Davos almost catches Joy snooping through his things, and, now suspicious, asks why she chose to join if she feared him; she says he needs her as much as she needs him. Joy uses an analogy about the building to explain that while Davos has extreme methods, he is a good man at his core, so she knows the end result will be great. When she shows the flier, he rages that people see him as just a good killer, so Joy suggests he show them how he can improve their lives. Though he still believes the city needs to be purged, Davos agrees with the suggestion and apologizes for the distrust, leaving Joy relieved but scared.
Walker Dr. Paul Edmonds about the message Mary left, as she is sure she didn't save them, and the others in her patrol had been killed before then.
He suggests another personality, and while Walker is sure there isn't one, she had believed until now that the nonviolent Mary had convinced someone to help and they had then killed the men. Edmonds asks about a military record of the event, and when she says it was redacted, he asks why the escape is suddenly troubling her all these years later. She explains that she has somewhere she wants to go and wants to know the variables, and he reminds here there isn't much known about DID. She about integration, and when he says they'd start with 6-month treatments, she leaves with a warning despite him saying she should stay if her "alter" is so violent. While picking up flowers for Bethany, Ward gets a call from Joy, who sparks his concern by asking him to take over the New Jersey factory deal. Though he wants to understand what's going on, she refuses to give and instead sends him info about the factory; he leaves without his flowers after paying. Danny and Colleen are frustrated about Mrs. Yang, and the former gets more angry saying she's sick of people marching off to their deaths. After an awkward bit about whether their relationship can sustain the situation, Colleen points out their training with his emotions worked, since he kept a level head with both Davos and Yang, and she wants to test it by taking him to a cage fight. When Ward arrives at Joy's place, he finds Walker, and though she wanted a favor from Joy, she instead asks Ward: she wants him to access her redacted military file. He doesn't want to, but a picture of his mom makes him realize Joy gave him the project about solar cells in case she doesn't survive; Walker agrees to help her to get the file, surprised Ward is willing to let her kill Davos. While Danny and Colleen try to prepare for the battle with Davos, Joy searches for the ritual bowl with BB's help, and Davos takes a disastrous trip into the city.
The start of this episode worked just like I'd figured when it came to Danny's leg: with the help of his magical brace and a can-do attitude he's already better.
Intercutting Colleen's training method with Davos's is a good way of contrasting the characters in a typical way, with Danny intended to focus on staying calm while Davos encourages brutality. I was a bit disappointed to find I was right, and Danny's leg is already healed, considering Misty and Matt both struggled with their injuries much longer. At the same time, however, I think there could actually be a good reason for this, both for the show's narrative and Danny as his own character. Misty is a physical-based character, and with Matt based in both spiritual and physical, his struggle with both took a bit longer. Danny, while being a martial artist, is much more based in his spirituality, however, and this could be why less focus was given to his injury. Especially now that I've seen Matt's brutal prison escape, there is definitely a reinforcement of the joke that Matt pushes through massive injury while smaller things seem to take Danny out of commission. But the important thing for Danny, and where his power truly comes from, is the ability to keep himself completely in check and be at one with himself. Keeping this in mind, I have a feeling that chi and the Iron Fist are a part of why Danny was able to recover from his injuries so quickly. The way Danny talks about chi, it's everywhere and in everyone, so even if the immense power of the Iron Fist is gone, he still has his normal chi. Along with its combat abilities, the Iron Fist can also be used for healing, as Davos said in the first season, so perhaps Danny's chi is helping, especially since it was infused with the Iron Fist for so long. That said, I get the feeling that perhaps the Iron Fist isn't totally gone from Danny, as everyone believes it to be. We know Davos performed the ceremony to take the fist, but considering it's a comic story, and the importance behind who wields the fist, who's to say Danny doesn't have a few embers of the fist left helping out in small ways? We already saw Danny struggle with using the fist in the first season, so perhaps he still has remnants of it and just can't access them. Getting away from Danny, the Walker side of this episode caught my interest for sure, especially since I've previously read about her comic counterpart. In the comics, Mary Walker is the mutant villain "Typhoid Mary," and has not two, but three personalities: Mary, Typhoid Mary, and Bloody Mary, with the last one the worst. Walker seemed certain she only has two personalities, but it's obvious something strange happened in Sokovia, and perhaps her assurance was masking fear. If there is a third personality even she doesn't know about, and it's so violent it massacred a whole squadron, she definitely has reason to be concerned. IN spite of her brutal nature, I like that the show pushes the idea of her just wanting to get away to Arizona, and truly feel bad for her. Especially in the past two episodes, a lot of her past has been revealed, and the fact that she went through hell in Sokovia for so long, and the result was DID that makes her life more difficult, one can't help but sympathize with her angry attitude. Even if she's living a mercenary life only caring about herself, Walker's life is difficult, and all she wants is to get to a peaceful place she can call home. I also liked seeing what the show is doing with Joy, now that she's more certain she needs to make an effort to fix her mistake. Davos trusts her for now, but Joy is taking a massive risk in betraying him, and she is having to search the places Davos is watching the most. It's unfortunate for her that his trust issues started in this episode, and while seemingly coincidental, Colleen points out a good reason later on. So now along with already having to keep Davos fooled, Joy has to do it while he's paranoid, and he's someone who requires careful wording when you talk to him. She's in a lot of danger trying to get Danny the bowl he needs to take back the fist, yet she's doing it because she realized her mistake, and Danny has been one to constantly promote the idea of redemption and forgiveness. With Davos and Danny preparing for a showdown, Joy sneaking around, and Walker's apparent third personality, things are getting more interesting by the minute.
