Todoroki gets a quick victory, but groups led by Momo, Midoriya, and Bakugou have trouble in their way to earning their licenses. Since splitting off from the others, Todoroki finds himself surrounded by ninja students. Though he froze them all in place, the leader used an enlarging quirk to hurl enormous nuts and bolts, then free himself and his companions. Todoroki tries to use his fire, but two others reveal water quirks that extinguish his power, and others hurl massive objects at them. Realizing they can perfectly counter his quirks, Todoroki causes a huge cloud of steam, and notices that their location must have real-life features. Distracting them with a blazing sign, he breaks open an industrial tank with his ice, then blows it up with fire. Having been blown away, the group finds that Todoroki has frozen them in place, and he easily secures a pass by tagging their targets. As he thinks about how trying to use both quirks slows him down, Todoroki's own targets then light up, saying to go to the waiting room with the other victors. We see that another student, Saiko Intelli, apparently from some sort of prep school, is sitting elsewhere and planning to combat a group led by Momo and consisting of Tsuyu, Jiro, and Shoji. Saiko's classmate gives her a rundown of everyone's quirks, and Saiko, calmly drinking a cup of tea, immediately devises a strategy to beat them. Todoroki goes inside the waiting room and notices Yoarashi, wondering why he doesn't remember seeing him at the exam. The latter notices him and gives a surprisingly dark glare. Inside another building, Momo and the others, having failed to find the others with Shoji's quirk, realize they need to go on the offensive, as Jiro says people are coming. Saiko and her classmates begin their phase one: a powerful blast of music is sent through the building, damaging Jirou's ears as she listens through a wall. As Saiko comes up in an elevator, another classmate outside uses a slingshot to crack the windows around Momo and the others. They all take cover as Momo realizes Saiko has sealed effectively sealed off Jiro and Shoji's quirks. She says Saiko is trying to trap them, and the sniper injures Jiro as she tries to make a move. The air vents kick into high blast, putting the amphibious Tsu to sleep, and the other door out is welded shut as metal plating covers the shattered windows. Saiko, whose quirk is revealed to be her massive IQ that grows when she drinks tea, waits calmly outside, hoping for Momo to use up her own quirk by creating things to stop the cold air from entering the room, immobilizing herself in the process. Momo, wondering what Todoroki, Midoriya, or Iida would do, becomes inspired thinking back to Midoriya's actions saving Bakugou, and realizes she needs to focus on saving the others, rather than thinking of their situation as an exam. She creates headphones for everyone, and though she says it will leave her unable to move, she then creates a massive speaker. Saiko prepares to enter, but inside, the injured Jiro uses her remaining earphone jack to send out a high frequency sound, incapacitating everyone but Saiko. With Tsu waking, Momo and the others go to leave, only for Saiko to lock herself and Momo back in, shocked that U.A. students would take such a risky maneuver. As she prepares to eliminate Momo, she is surprised when the latter handcuffs them together, but pulls a ball out with her other hand. Jiro and Sjoki then bust open the doors, allowing Tsuyu to grab her remaining hand with her tongue. Shocked, she asks why they would come back for Momo when they could have just passed and left, but they say they would never abandon a friend, with Shoji thinking back to Midoriya's determination to save both Bakugou and Tokoyami. Defeated, Saiko surrenders and we cut to Bakugou, Kirishima, and Kaminari, climbing a ladder that leads to Shiketsu's Seiji Shishikura. As they deal with his grotesque but potentially dangerous quirk, Midoriya, Sero, and Uraraka form a plan to deal with the group of students surrounding them, while Aizawa explains his thoughts on their chances to Ms. Joke.
So far, the exam has been a good way of showing the other characters more and going into how they've improved. We've always gotten a lot from the whole class, but Midoriya, as the main character, naturally got the spot light and the focus was on him getting better with his quirk. Now, we see how everyone is learning, and in particular, how they've learned from his actions both in class and in their crisis situations. With Todoroki there isn't much to see, other than his tactical mind, because he is able to quickly come up with a way to defeat the ninja students. Momo, on the other hand, shows that her planning and improvisation have improved, and both she and Shoji have clearly been influenced by Midoriya. As All Might said while commending Momo for tracking the Nomu at camp, Aizawa had previously pointed out how she cracked under pressure. Now, however, she takes the time to stop and calm down, thinking of how the other tactical members of the group would act in her situation. Midoriya in particular pops up in her mind, and inspires her to act, because she realizes at that moment that to be a hero and get out of this situation, she needs to think of saving the others before considering how she'll do in the exam. She seems to have also taken a cue from Midoriya in looking not just at herself, but the others and their quirks as well, to find a combination method. As Saiko predicted, Momo's first idea to fix the situation was to block the vents, but to make enough clay to do so would leave them at the mercy of their foes. With Jiro still somewhat able to use her quirk, however, Momo realizes she can create an amp to knock out their enemies and giving them a chance to escape. While is own moment is brief, Shoji also thinks back to Midoriya's actions, as the latter's conviction at the camp has him determined to make sure everyone is safe when Momo is locked in with Saiko, even though he could have easily passed. Seeing less of Midoriya, and more of the influence he's had on the others, is a good way of giving progression to the side characters and preventing us from getting burnt out on the main hero. This is especially important at this point, because we've seen Midoriya progress so far since his internship days, gaining better control of his quirk and improving his gear. Because Midoriya has been given so much focus, we've seen him grow and mature, but the others have also been growing, and it's fun to see their own upgrades, both in their suits and their ability to use their quirks. Near the beginning, Yoarashi likely piqued fans' interests in the waiting room, given the death glare he shot at Todoroki. Prior to this, viewers learned he scored better than the latter when it came to recommended students, yet chose not to attend U.A. for some reason. Along with this mystery, he'd been lighthearted and silly upon meeting everyone, cheering "Plus Ultra" and bashing his head on the ground while apologizing. His glance at Todoroki hints at some kind of grudge, and with them being two of the strongest competitors, they are likely to go head to head at some point. Until then, time is ticking down for the remaining students, with less than half the possible passing spots remaining. Bakugou, Midoriya, and the others definitely have their work cut out as they come out of hiding and spring into action to prove themselves worthy of being called heroes.
