Following "Daredevil's" attack on the Bulletin, the magnitude of Fisk's manipulations start coming to light as everyone struggles to move forward.
Now seated in luxury, Fisk is still annoyed to not have back the painting he and Vanessa connected over, telling his lawyer to get it when he claims there's an issue.
A guard checks Fisk's ankle monitor, then is called to another situation, and Fisk retires to his room, then reveals his shoe cabinet hides a secret stairwell. He does down to a room of computer, having a woman, Mrs. Shelby (Kelly McAndrew) bring up cameras of the guards above and news reports about the Bulletin, which put a smile on his face as news of "Daredevil's" involvement spreads like wildfire. Following his defeat, Matt rages about Fisk's new ally to Maggie, who can't get a word in as he fumes that Fisk was ahead again and he couldn't defend his loved ones. To his surprise, she agrees this resulted in him listening to her; she's realized she can't really offer advice to Daredevil problems she doesn't have experience with. She therefore decides to just patch him up, which he is finally calm enough for, and he turns down her suggestion to get help from others like him. Matt laments that Fisk is too calculated and he doesn't think he can beat his new foe, and Maggie points out he should find him before deciding. She makes him realize the suit was a perfect duplicate of his, leaving Melvin as the only person he could've gotten it from.
At the FBI headquarters, Nadeem shows Karen and Foggy a video of the moment Dex said Karen's name, pointing out how suspicious it seems, since she's unhurt.
Though she agrees he was talking to her, she says she doesn't know him, declaring it wasn't Daredevil, as he didn't even act like the vigilante. Karen is angered that Nadeem is sitting on the info she gave him, but he reminds her that this person used her gun to kill someone, knows her name, and didn't hurt her. Nadeem tries to move onto Matt, but Foggy and Karen point out that, like him not being in custody, Evans, the only one with dirt on Fisk, is also now gone. Nadeem is left speechless as Karen claims the attacker helped Nadeem because now he doesn't have to admit to everyone that Fisk is playing the FBI, and he can only make a weak attempt at tying Karen having her gun to "Daredevil's" attack. Foggy ends the meeting, and as he and Karen leave, she notices the bagged cell phones of Dex's victims, getting calls and messages from concerned loved ones. She is surprised that Foggy is still so calm after being injured, but he says he has to focus on Nadeem because him digging into Evans is the key to everything. Though Foggy wants to check on Matt, Karen wants to go to the hospital to visit her coworkers, and Foggy gets a call from a worried Marci. Nadeem has his own worried call from Seema, and after lying that he arrived after the action was over, he gets word from another agent that the warden has arrived. In his vigilante garb, Matt finds Melvin with his beloved Betsy (Karina Casiano), who turns out to also be his parole officer. After she leaves, Matt tells Melvin he doesn't care if they're breaking a rule being together and questions him about the suit. Melvin offers to make one for him to even the odds, but Matt says he doesn't want one and asks about the molds and measurements Melvin would still have. Though he admittedly burned down his old workshop, Fisk got him a new one when forcing him to make the new suit. Matt asks where it is while Melvin apologizes profusely for the deaths that resulted from the new suit's creation.
Foggy returns to his apartment in a daze, and after telling the concerned Marci that he's just tired, she tries to lead him to bed, but he pulls her into a passionate embrace.
Nadeem questions Warden Riggle (Bill Winkler) about Evans, but Riggle seems to brush off the situation as a paperwork error. When Nadeem says he's just trying to understand how Evans walked and who wanted him dead, Riggle demands his lawyer, and Nadeem realizes he's covering himself. He tells Hattley what Evans was going to reveal, and though he says it's hearsay, she wants to get the info to the ADIC, since Fisk could be manipulating them. Since uncovering such a manipulation would likely result in their criminal busts being freed, he asks for time to figure everything out. Back at Foggy and Marci's apartment, the two are amazed at his actions from before, and he says almost dying made him realize how much he had left to do. Seizing the moment, he proposes, but Marci turns him down, not wanting their marriage to start based on fear. While she prepares for a deposition, Foggy picks up a tactical operation summary they knocked over before, and finds something that leads to a later discovery. At the hospital, Karen overhears a woman telling Ellison about a coworker, Amber, whose family wants to pull her plug, and she glares at Karen as she leaves. Karen tries to apologize to Ellison when he reveals Amber is brain-dead, but he reminds her that journalists are supposed to pick fights, and sometimes lose. As the fight against Fisk is for everyone in Hell's Kitchen, Ellison wants to keep going, and asks for everything she knows about Daredevil and his connection to Fisk. When she is adamant again that it wasn't actually Daredevil, Ellison realizes she knows the hero's identity. She refuses to share it, causing Ellison to fly into a rage about how his "family" got attacked in his "house," and threatens to fire her if she doesn't share what she knows. Matt and Melvin go to the workshop, where the former is surprised to see another suit; Melvin suddenly locks him in with it, saying to ask Fisk why there are two himself. Matt breaks out, but Melvin says he can't let him leave, or Betty will get hurt, and the two fight until Matt realizes FBI agents are coming. Though Melvin holds his own, Matt eventually gets him to admit the agents were supposed to find him with the suit, and Matt realizes Fisk is trying to frame him. Finally convinced that Fisk will just kill him and Betsy anyway, Melvin reveals that the new Daredevil never gave a name, but he's sure the man was an FBI agent. The two fight off some of the arriving agents, but Matt is able to hide in the shadow. Melvin watches, heartbroken, as Matt escapes, and calls out for Betsy. While Nadeem confronts Fisk with his newfound information, Matt's struggles lead him to visit Betsy and Ray, and Karen tries to cope with what she's been through.
Now that we know for sure that Fisk staged everything that's happened so far, I love that we're getting to see exactly how manipulative and calculating he is.
At the start of the season, the audience is like the characters in that Fisk seems to be cooperating, though everyone was likely suspicious from the start. We still don't even know exactly what he's up to, but it's quite a revelation that he even has a hidden computer room in his hotel. This does explain something I was wondering in episode four: how he was able to call Matt while stuck in the hotel. There's nothing so far about who Mrs. Shelby is, but it's clear that, with her help, Fisk is able to easily know everything that's going on and manipulate things covertly. This reveal also shows us exactly what Karen is close to figuring out, as before one had to wonder why Fisk would buy the hotel other than to eventually get a luxurious life. Now it's clear that, in the time that he owned the building, he was able to build his hidden command center and have cameras installed. More being uncovered results in Ray struggling to decide what to do, as he's clearly trying to get justice for everyone involved. He's a nice guy, which makes it more of a shame that Fisk is able to manipulate him so easily, and now he's in a situation where even the proper arrests made would be undone if the truth were revealed. He's doing a bit of manipulating of his own, due to Hattley's suggestion, as he lies to his wife about what's going on to keep her from worrying. Obviously this isn't on the same level as what Fisk does, however, and he's doing it because he's trying to make sure his wife and son are happy. Foggy was one of the most impressive aspects of this episode for me, in the way he stayed focused on finding the truth in spite of his injury. He's suffering like the others, but aside from trying to rush things with Marci, he spends this episode trying to figure everything out, especially after noticing something strange in the report. With Karen, there's a lot of emotional vulnerability int his episode, right from the start as the blood stains on her sleeve bother her a great deal. Along with the trauma she experienced facing such a dangerous man and being there as he injured and killed numerous people, she feels like it's her fault. As Ellison points out, journalists are meant to fight like this, but it's easy to see how she could feel like this happened because of her digging. However, Evans was bound to become a target eventually, as along with how Fisk has his cameras and police moles, Evans was plain and simple a loose end to get rid of. The guilt about this situation leads to her having a breakdown later in the episode, and as painful as it is to see her go through it, it gets even worse when she reaches out to someone and gets a disgustingly uncaring reaction. The episode was also emotional during the scenes when Matt went to Melvin, whom I couldn't help but feel terrible for in the end. He might be an ex-criminal, but Melvin is trying to just live his life and be with the person he loves, but Fisk keeps forcing him into things, and even Matt is essentially manipulating him whenever they meet. The one thing he truly cares about is Betsy, and his upset reaction to Matt leaving him with the FBI is heartbreaking, especially as he cries out for his loved one. On the more action-oriented side of things, Melvin was quite impressive in how he kept up with Matt, even if the latter was injured. We don't see Dex at all int his episode, but I feel like that was a smart move, as it just makes me want to watch more to find out what he's been doing since the attack. I'll still be posting about this in a normal schedule of every two days, even with Iron Fist done, but I'm excited to get right back into the action and see what more gets uncovered and what the characters do with it.
