Adora almost gets the answers she wants, but Catra's infiltration sends the two running from a defense protocol and taking a painful trip down memory lane.
Adora enters the First Ones citadel, unaware Catra swoops in before it closes, and comes across a hologram like she encountered in the other ruins.
She tries to ask about healing, but it doesn't understand, so she transforms into She-Ra, and it more easily recognizes her. It says the blade is the "Sword of Protection," classified as a portable runestone. She repeatedly asks how she heals people, but when the hologram does understand the question, itjust says the sword can heal and restore balance. She-Ra asks about Light Hope, and the hologram immediately understands better. It says she isn't ready yet and must let go, as Light Hope is waiting for her. Catra removes a piece of tech, causing a glow and noise that results in She-Ra launching a blast that destroys a structure. The hologram sees Catra and activates the defenses, closing doors and calling bots. She-Ra holds open a door, but after escaping the robots, they find more in a hall. She-Ra hurriedly explains they're after Catra, who shouldn't be there, and that she obviously can't do anything since nothing in the citadel listens to her. She uses her sword to collapse part of the hall, and Catra snaps she didn't ask Adora to save her. Adora asks why she's there, and realizes Shadow Weaver doesn't know. Catra grows irritated, saying she isn't there because she cares about Adora and asking about her new friends. She shrugs off Adora reminding her she had SW ransom and curse them and says she'll go her own way, only to realize there's only one path.
The duo heads deeper into the citadel, and when Catra thinks they've come to a dead end, Adora reveals a hidden door with the word "Eternia."
The following room is just darkness, and as Adora looks around with her glowing sword, Catra turns to leave, only to find the door has disappeared. Adora approaches a glowing ball, assuming it to be Light Hope, but it suddenly flashes and scans the pair, and they look around to see the Fright Zone. Catra asserts that they can't be in the real place and walks off. They both realize it's not real when a wall and a guard flicker and can't be touched. Catra calls for Adora, and the latter sees a younger version of her former friend, who runs through her to a young version of herself, worried her nose is broken. The young Adora scolds her friend for fighting someone named Octavia, then makes her feel better by insulting Octavia herself and running off gleefully with Catra. The two are suddenly replaced with their current selves, still holding hands. They wonder what's happening and feud when Adora brings up having to heal Glimmer. They cross a cavernous hole in one room, and Adora asks why Catra saved her. The floor under her falls, and Catra surprises her by saving her, and asking if she really thought she'd let Shadow Weaver erase her memory. Adora assures Catra she has good memories of the Fright Zone, but no matter what, the Horde is evil. She says she still likes Catra, who scoffs that she doesn't feel the same, and as the two playfully wrestle, Adora falls through a pillar to a new hologram. Their now slightly older selves are sparring, occasionally playing tricks on the other. Catra becomes angry when Lonnie intervenes, and loses to Adora in the process. She snaps at Lonnie and grows jealous as Adora gets praised, but assures her friend she's fine and let her win so they wouldn't expect more out of her. While Adora chats with the others, Catra goes to the locker room, where she angrily tears up. In the present, a spider-like security robot webs Catra and drags her through the mirror, despite Adora rushing in to grab her hand.
Catra tearfully calls to Adora, but steadies and frees herself before ripping off pieces of the robot. As she stands victorious, Adora comes in stabbing it with her sword.
She snaps that she had it, and Adora smugly scoffs "sure you did." Quietly enraged, Catra says she wants to get out of the citadel. Adora demands to know what's wrong; she just tried to save her. Catra says she obviously does just fine on her own and doesn't need Adora to save her. Adora apologizes for leaving her but says she couldn't stay with the evil Horde, suggesting Catra, whom she says isn't a bad person, should come with her. Another hologram begins, where the again young friends are playing and come across SW's enormous jewel. She soon enters, groaning in pain, and removes her mask, causing Adora to gasp at her disfigured face. Shadow Weaver demands that Adora leave but holds Catra in place, saying she won't drag Adora into her deplorable type of actions. Adora begs SW to release her friend, but the sorceress simply snarls at Catra that she only keeps her around because Adora likes her, and she'll dispose of the girl herself if she jeopardizes Adora's future. Adora gets her to release Catra, and she calmly tells the girl she needs to do a better job keeping Catra under control in the future. As the two return to the present, their issues come to the front as Catra's pain and rage explode, leading her and Adora to making choices about their futures.
This show has been greatly hit-or-miss for me, and this episode was definitely a hit with how it focused on Adora and Catra's past.
With just two characters starring in this episode, the story is able to stay focused on them and what led them to their current relationship. What I find especially interesting is the training hologram is an expansion of the first episode when the group was in a training session. By going back further this time, we see that Catra's inferiority complex has been built over a long period of repeated actions. She may have been more agile than Adora, but it's clear she was never able to completely outshine her in fights, and Shadow Weaver always preferred her. These constant negative thoughts only worsened the also-existing condition of her thinking Adora doesn't truly care about her. As she was made to feel worthless, she had to stand by while Shadow Weaver praised her friend, and Adora did little to actually help her in her mind. When looking at it clearly, there's obviously not much Adora could've done, but Catra seems to believe her friend should've been more bold in helping her. Back then, she tried more to hide her true feelings, which led to the current state where she'll just blurt out her anger at her former friend. Holding in these feelings caused her negative thoughts to fester, and has caused her to now believe she needs to be completely rid of Adora if she wants to truly become the best and get out of her shadow. I also really liked how the memory sequences ended with the two following the same actions their past selves were doing. Having them laughing and running hand-in-hand shows that both of them still have fond memories of each other and likely wish things were so simple again. Despite what she continues to say, Catra still has friendship for Adora, but she's in a confusing and painful situation where Adora also causes her to feel inadequate. This could be why she's so set in her desire to stay with the Horde and overthrow SW, claiming she just doesn't want to leave despite knowing how they are. Adora thinks she's a good person, but it's clear the pain Catra endured has turned her cruel, and she doesn't care that she'll be hurting others to get to a better position. Maybe she even likes that she'll be able to do this, as she'll be able to transfer pain she feels onto others, which won't make her feel any better but will make her even colder. Catra's relationship with Shadow Weaver is akin to someone who is abused as a child and grows up to be an abuser themselves; she can't handle her emotions properly and the only way to find release is to hurt others. We also get to see a bit more about the sword and the past of the First Ones in this episode, though She-Ra does make a frustrating move carving out part of the ceiling. It's funny to me seeing the First Ones tech seems to work like a modern search engine, programmed to recognize certain commands like "Light Hope." Adora doesn't seem to understand this, and repeatedly uses the same phrases as though the hologram can understand her complex questions. I would love for irony to be added that Adora is simply trying to hard to get the healing to work, much like how she's trying too hard to get answers. Despite her difficulties with the hologram, it easily recognized Light Hope's name, and told Adora the time was coming to meet her; she just wasn't ready yet. Having been told to "let go" and now in a dangerous situation thanks to Catra's decision, Adora might actually be on the verge of improving her She-Ra abilities.
