Adora and the others check on a supposedly haunted supply area that went quiet, and Catra faces Hordak's wrath as Entrapta catches his eye.
Hordak is initially pleased when an experiment seems to go well, only to declare the machine useless when it fizzles out and explodes.
Meanwhile, Adora is appalled that Entrapta is working for the Horde, and though she thinks Shadow Weaver did something, Glimmer is certain Entrapta was "normal." She believes it's because of the Horde's superior tech, but points out they have magic. Bow reminds her the two aren't mutually exclusive; Entrapta understood this and got closer to combining them than anyone else. He tries to lighten the mood by pointing out his own abilities, only for an arrow to malfunction, and Swift Wind swoops in with news of houses nearby. Glimmer decides they need to accept Entrapta's decision and says they should focus on their mission to check on the farming outpost Alwyn. Though there hasn't been Horde sightings there, they lost communications the week before. Adora is sure the Horde is involved, but Glimmer states the Horde stands no chance even with Entrapta, as the rebellion members stick together and don't give up. This hypes up Bow as they leave, but Adora gets a strange feeling from a sudden breeze. While tinkering away, Entrapta notices a loose bolt in her desk, and since Emily can't find the proper tool to fix it, Entrapta says they can't work in these conditions. Catra pays a visit to Hordak, hoping to establish set meetings and make their next plan, but he accuses her of wasting his time. She claims their in a better spot than ever before, but he says she wasted their advantage with the Whispering Woods and reminds her she got captured. Explaining Ehteria's atmosphere has been an issue for him, he activates a force field that removes the air. He is fine, but Catra gasps for breath, so he calls her pathetic. While returning the atmosphere, he explains that failure is when something stops serving a purpose, leaving it worthless to him. She exclaims that she hasn't failed yet, and has the most knowledge about defeating the princesses. He agrees to let her prove she can defeat the rebellion, so she leaves, with his demonic spy parroting his earlier use of the word "pathetic."
Swift Wind warns the others that he feels something weird at the outpost, but is unable to describe it further and asks about Alwyn.
Glimmer explains the outpost supplies essentially everything, calling it one big happy orchard, but they come upon a dark, misty ghost town. The group sees no one, Horde or otherwise, so Bow pulls out his tracker pad, which he says can now find Horde soldiers, only for it to emit a screeching pulse. Though he can't figure out how to fix it, Glimmer says they'll get past the situation, ini spite of rumors that the town is haunted, which surprises Adora. Glimmer says they have nothing to fear, but Adora shares SW's tale of the "Weeping Princess" who roams Etheria and weeps before striking. Swift Wind accidentally scares the group by blurting out he heard a noise, and though he says it wasn't the Weeping Princess, he's sure someone is near. As the group leaves, a ghostly figure floats by in the background. While Catra devises a new plan, Scorpia enters with numerous files, explaining the battalion Catra wants to send has been requesting new armor. Catra says to have the armor made, but Scorpia then needs to find that paperwork, and though Catra is frustrated with the busy work, Scorpia reveals these is Shadow Weaver's files, so it's not uncommon. Entrapta plops out of a duct; a travel method she says is quicker; still looking for the tool she needs as a matter of principle. She decides to get one she saw in Hordak's lab. Enraged, Catra tells her Hordak is not to be messed with, and orders her to promise she won't enter his sanctum. Entrapta agrees after gushing over his use of "sanctum." Scorpia discovers the armory needs a certain material to make more armor, so Catra decides to find out where they can get more while Scorpia watches Entrapta.
Adora and the others nervously look around Alwyn, finding houses empty, cold food suggesting a hurried leave some time ago, and no sign of struggle.
Adora says it's like the story of the Weeping Princess, only there's no bloody footprints, and Swift Wind gives the group a scare by loudly asking what they found. More scares abound as Bow points out a pillar he says looks familiar, and Adora claims the situation reminds her of the "Undead Princess" she was told about in the Horde. Bow points out the Horde seemed to have a theme with these tales, and Glimmer says they need to figure out what happened in Alwyn; they again fail to notice a figure glide along behind them. Entrapta faces a dilemma outside Hordak's lab, remembering Catra told her not to enter but feeling like no one would know but her if she popped in quickly. She decides to go in, catching another failed experiment from Hordak, who explodes in rage and storms out after angrily clearing his workbench. Although she thinks she should leave, Entrapta decides she needs to stay in the lab "for science," mentioning her own failed experiments and how she didn't give up. Back in Alwyn, Glimmer gets a glimpse of the spirit following them, and a sound pierces the night. Swift Wind brings up his bad feeling from before, and Adora describes the sound as singing, but Glimmer pretends to have heard nothing. Everyone hears things in the wind, however, and after seeing the figure float by in the woods, Adora transforms into She-Ra to chase it, with the others in tow. Hordak finds Entrapta working on his machine and screams at her to get out. In typical Entrapta fashion, she ignores his rage and says she'll leave once she's done. She quickly finishes and exits as he warns of punishments to come, explaining she replaced his un-insulated cables and the machine should hold a charge. To his surprise, the machine sparks to a stable life, and she returns, excitedly asking what he could be building that needs such a power source. His confusion overrides his anger, and she realizes he's trying to build a portal, but says no one's ever been able to build one before. He scoffs that this is true for someone from such a backwater planet as Etheria, and she angrily demands to know everything since she helped him. Hordak explains that portals are real and he intends to build one, so she asks to help him, pointing out he could transport troops and supplies cross-planet. He claims she thinks to small and reveals the existence of other countless planets and innumerable galaxies, a thing he says only Etheria has failed to realize. She is amazed to learn he's been to other worlds and he gives an evil smirk. While Catra goes to Shadow Weaver for advice and has a frustrating encounter with Hordak, Bow discovers the truth behind Alwyn's haunting, only to find another secret.
The shining moments in this episode for me came from Entrapta entering Hordak's lab and how his anger doesn't phase her.
It was only natural that Entrapta would disregard Catra's order in favor of entering Hordak's sanctum, and of course she ends up being able to fix his machine. Despite constantly breaking the Horde's rules, Entrapta is quickly becoming Hordak's favorite person to have around, as she only seems to improve things. Before, he told Catra that Entrapta was allowed to do what she wanted, since she was improving their machinery, and now she's helping with his portal problems. As the show has established, Mara caused Etheria to end up displaced by itself in the galaxy, so it's likely Hordak just happened to be there when this occurred. Of course, She-Ra is also the twin sister of Prince Adam, He-Man, and Hordak is connected to He-Mand's arch-enemy, Skeletor. I believe I read somewhere there were no plans to expanding into a He-Man show, but thus far I really feel like they have the tools to do so, and it could be great. Hordak is desperate to get off Etheria, and him repeatedly calling it "backwater" suggests that despite all its technological greatness, it's low on the totem pole.Much like Entrapta, this makes me excited at the possibility that characters will eventually travel to other planets, and the wonders they'll find. Aside from the possibilities for the portal, I in general enjoyed Entrapta's interactions with Hordak, and how she ignored his anger. Her just being in his lab was enough to set him off, but she didn't care. She was too busy working, and his threats didn't phase her as she left the room. Initially, he's annoyed she's even in the lab, but it was quite funny to see his rage fade into plain confusion and curiosity after she returned to ask about the portal. In general, I just really enjoyed the interactions between characters this episode, with Scorpia having some great moments as she gets all bashful when possibly disappointing Catra. There's also the lighter moments with Adora and the others as they spook each other, though there is intended to be a creep factor as well. Nervous from the get-go, Swift Wind provides his typical joking attitude, and dislikes having to go near any of the supposedly haunted areas. I wasn't sure at times if Adora was completely frightened, because the way she talked about the princess stories sounded to me like she was making light of things. She does accidentally scare the others with these tales, however, as does Swift Wind, and at one forced moment, Bow. When he notices the pillar, Bow shouts to the others, and this serves no purpose other than to be a jumpscare, as with how close the group was, he didn't need to yell. The situation they find themselves in is quite interesting for their world, especially since, as Bow mentioned, the magic and technology of this world are linked. Ghosts are often used more in a magical sense, but in this world, where the planet itself is essentially once giant computer, technology is linked with everything. Catra is also in a new position, albeit one that was obviously going to happen, with Hordak's interest in her waning as she fails to get results. Like I said in a past post, up to now she has seen some results, but these have mostly been in the form of just keeping the rebellion down, rather than squashing it. Add into that the fact Catra got captured, and you have reason for Hordak to begin abusing Catra the way he used to treat Shadow Weaver. In the end, she's not doing anything with true finality like Hordak wants, and now Entrapta is getting his attention with her technological skills. Unlike most episodes, there isn't really any action this time around, but that works to keep both plots going at a good place. Adora and the others are on a pretty calm mission, even if it seems scary because of the rumored haunting, so likewise, Catra's situation is simple. Before she was only dealing with the combat aspects of the war, but now she, and we as the fans, have to see the technical side to things. Catra wanted a management position, but failed to realize the managing that came along with that, as she needs to get people to fight, but first has to provide them with armor, and before she can do that, she has to find out where to even get materials. This is the kind of thing that inevitably slows down the Horde's progress, and is likely a hole Shadow Weaver fell into shortly before being overthrown. With Catra slipping up but Entrapta helping Hordak achieve his goals, Adora and the others face potentially dangerous advancements from their foes, but at least they've helped out a source of their supplies for the future.
