Tensions are boiling over between Chinatown's gangs, prompting action from Danny, and Davos and Joy make moves to achieve their goal. Things go from 0 to 100 fast, with the opening scene showing a Golden Tiger receiving payment from a store owner, only to turn and find himself surrounded by Hatchets. Despite trying to defend himself, the Tiger is easily overcome, and the Hatchets cover his head and cut into him. The Hatchets push him out into the street, where a crowd stands around asking if he's okay and, in an obvious statement about modern society, taking pictures with cell phones rather than calling the police, until Danny shows up. With the man having died in his arms, Danny leaves, noticing Mary in a coffee shop, so he goes inside and finds she is a great artist. Talking about the possibility of work, Danny suggests she avoid Chinatown, not specifying the murder, and he invites her to head to his apartment, because it is near a place she could draw some flowers. Anybody with basic understanding of social norms and the way the two talk will know Mary is interested in Danny, but he is oblivious, just trying to be nice. He mentions the street violence and gives directions when suddenly she stops and stares, enthralled with the way the light is hitting some spires. Danny suddenly realizes he accidentally led her on and tells her about Colleen, and Mary suddenly starts behaving erratically. He invites her back to the apartment and introduces her to Colleen, who watches somewhat awkwardly with Danny as Mary takes a drink. Colleen learns how they met and figures out Mary liked Danny, and Mary thanks them by offering a drawing. Looking at Danny and Colleen admire her drawing, Mary suddenly goes into a daze once more, heading to the bathroom. The two are confused as the door basically slams shut, and Danny shares the news of the Hatchet attack, explaining that Albert telling him it's not even safe to work that day was why he helped Mary out. They joke about Mary crushing on him, and in the bathroom she struggles with the hot water running. In a less-than subtle sign of her mental condition, she wipes some steam off the mirror, leaving half her face covered. Suddenly composed, she ties her hair back while staring accusingly in the mirror, then confuses the couple further by rushing out with a door slam. They shrug it off and Colleen says she's volunteering at Bayard that day because her co-worker Sam is helping tack down the furniture store owner. Danny apologizes for forgetting but Colleen says it's fine and explains that Choi may have come to Bayard looking for help if he was being shaken down. Danny believes something big i about to happen, so Colleen suggests he talk to Mr. Yang. Though Yang helped against the Hand, they don't really have common ground. Colleen asks about Davos and he tells her his former friend seemed to want an apology for his actions. He brings up their fight to determine who'd battle Shou-Lao, and when she leaves mumbles to himself in a way suggesting he doesn't feel like he really won. We head back to when the fight occurred; Danny and Davos sitting opposite each other as monks enter and say they are the only two remaining of a group, and cannot leave until one of them dies or surrenders. The two don masks matching Iron Fist's comic appearance and begin fighting, each connected by a long cloth. Colleen goes to Bayard where Sam reveals there is no record of Choi, suggesting that maybe it just got lost. Everyone is busy setting up for a charity gambling event, and Colleen is surprised to learn Yang is hosting it and his wife is attending. Deciding to go back to Choi's, Colleen stumbles upon an apparent mugging, only to find out it was a setup from the Hatchets as revenge for the restaurant. She manages to get the attacker's gun and they flee, so she stashes the gun and chases them to their hideout. Their, the leader Rhyno beats her intended attacker for failing and she steps in with some rather cheesy lines to get his attention. Rhyno aims a shotgun and claims she was the problem at the restaurant, though she points out she wanted to avoid a brawl between them and the Tigers. When she points out it's a bad idea to move into Tigers territory and they wonder why she would want to help them after the attack. He reveals they all stay in these horrible conditions because they have nothing else, and turns down her offer of Bayards help, and he says they're good so she leaves after giving them directions to Bayards. The boy who attacked her, BB, follows and apologizes for his actions, and she notes his intelligence despite no schooling. He explains they're squatting there because the Hatchets are going to destroy the Tigers, but she warns him to be careful and leaves. Danny, meanwhile, taking Colleen's advice, talks to Yang about not attacking the Tigers, but Yang says he must because they're trying to take control of the docks. Danny suggests he meet with the leader of the Tigers, and Yang reveals the attack is also personal because the driver of the armored car they attacked was his nephew. Yang refuses to stand down, saying he deserves justice, and Danny becomes enraged, accidentally damaging Yang's desk with the iron fist. As Danny leaves we flash back again to his fight against Davos, obviously much later in the day, where he starts to get the upper hand but his friend tears the fabric between them and makes a comeback. Davos brings Danny down but the future Iron Fist refuses to yield, making his own comeback and using the fabric to bandage his now-damaged hand. We cut to an anxious Ward and his assistant as she reports her findings about the assets Joy got.
He becomes irritated but quickly apologizes and she seems to forgive his outburst, so he explains he feels there was obviously something in the junk pile that wasn't junk and wants to hide it. She tells him Joy's assistant let her know about some kind of event she'll be attending, so Ward heads out, mentioning that she should tell any callers that he's busy. At said event, Joy is talking with friend, rival, and auctioneer Mika Prada, who compliments her for her current attitude and takes an interest in Davos. Ward suddenly arrives and questions why she would talk to Mika, and after claiming he just wants to talk to his sister, says whatever she's doing won't work. She reveals she knows about him going to Narcotics Anonymous and Davos interrupts, and he and Joy leave Ward behind. They meet with Mika, who shows them some kind of ancient box with a bowl inside. Davos is mesmerized, but she prevents him from touching it, noting any oils on his hand could cause damage They fail to convince her to put it up for auction now, rather than in three months, and Joy stops Davos from going for a blade, saying she'll handle the situation. With Danny's attempt with Yang having failed, Colleen suggests they go to his wife, and as Joy try a new plan on Mika, they face a problem because of Danny's meddling and we see both the results of Davos and Danny's fight and another odd Mary scene. This episode continues the trend of having us know Joy and Davos are up to something, but not exactly what. A bit of research for any less familiar with Iron Fist stories, along with the trailer for this season and what Davos said to Danny after their fight last episode, will tell viewers what they are trying to do. The show isn't really trying to hide what's going on, and this seems because the focus seems more on Davos himself. As we can see from the fight and his interactions with Danny, especially the one last episode, he holds a grudge due to not being the Iron Fist. This grudge got worse when K'un L'un fell, and in blaming Danny, his rage is growing to the point he's having to do questionable things. He's not an immediate, boring villain, however, as he actually doesn't want to do these things because, in his own words, they are "distasteful." He feels just being in New York is corrupting him, and he's actually having to give in to get what he wants. Mary's character is also made more interesting this episode, because she has more freakouts this episode, and this time she does so in front of others. She had a slight moment in episode one while talking about photography, but here she flatout snaps in front of Danny and Colleen. Considering the odd personality changes and the obvious mirror moment, it seems clear Mary has some sort of split personality. This would explain both the ending scene here and her initial apartment scene last episode: her other personality left them for her to see later. If this is the case, I'm guessing now that the other personality appeared at Danny and Colleen's place, and that last episode she actually told us about her. She mentioned to Danny that the camera was actually her sister's, but shows a great love herself for photography. It's likely she doesn't actually have a "sister," but rather the sister is her alternate personality who occasionally takes over. Colleen shows her caring nature in this episode, trying to look out for the gang members despite them attacking her. Danny is continuing to struggle with the responsibility of being the Iron Fist and if he deserves it, which I hope won't bog down the season, but so far he seems much better than what we got in season one. Last time we mostly got him yelling about being the Iron Fist, only to often get destroyed in fights. Heck, it happens elsewhere: one of my favorite moments in Defenders was when he and Daredevil went at it. Even before the others intervened, Matt kicked his butt, and if not for the intervention, Danny might not have landed any hits at all. He also struggled with using the fist, and doing so would them leave him somewhat powerless for a time. Now, however, we've seen him work at improving it, and he uses it constantly without fail or being drained. So far the show feels like an improvement, and I'm excited to see what will happen when the gang tensions explode and Danny has to deal with Davos.
