It's time for the ritual, and the loss of Hisone proves to be a major issue for the group as anastomosis sets in again.
Lord Mitatsu begins rising, prompting the airforce to bring in the maidens and Haruto as the priest, along with the D-pilots, with Hinomoto filling in for Hisone.
After the anxious group readies, the D-pilots are shocked to see the enormous storm surrounding Mitatsu, but Hinomoto urges them to stay calm. The enormous Mitatsu becomes visible through the clouds, and Hinomoto and Elle use the slipstream to reach his front and direct him. Sosoda sends Maezawa and Kogure to verify the destination, and Nao requests to go with Sosoda and Remi to see the action up close. Impressed with her desire to help despite not getting to fly, the two permit her to come along.
Nao and Haruto wonder about Hisone, who has returned home. Her dad is worried, and it turns out she's calling herself scum for suddenly quitting on everyone.
After last episode, she explained to Sosoda and Remi she decided to quit because she cares about them all, and her confusing feelings for Haruto could put them in danger. Sosoda feels it's worse for her to leave on the eve of the ritual, but Hisone is certain she can't just stop liking Haruto, and doesn't want to hurt them or Masotan. He continues protesting, but Remi accepts her resignation, before suddenly throwing her into the barracks. Disgusted that she could quit after all the time spent with her comrades, Remi snarls that Hisone is scum and demands that she get out. Deciding she really is a terrible person, Hisone chases her cat upstairs and comes across her old yearbook, full of pictures where she was trying in vain to fit in. She remembers how she started becoming friends with everyone, and finds where she wrote her intention to join the airforce and protect what's precious to her.
With the flying going smoothly, Sosoda asks Remi about what happened with Hisone; she admits she's likely still bitter about not being chosen as a D-pilot, and he tosses in how she also lost her man to the one who was chosen.
She stayed on despite this, much like Nao, and believes she was pushing her dream to succeed on Hisone. In the storm, Hinomoto says she can't excuse what Hisone did, but it's good for her because she's almost back with Yae. It turns out in the past, Hinomoto loved the Key Girl from her time, Yae, and they had planned to take Montparnasse (their name for Masotan) and fly to Paris. Remembering this causes anastomosis to begin, and when the others call out to her, she rages to "Montparnasse" that she gave away everything to fly with him, asking why he can't forgive her sins and accept her. The OTF goes into a tailspin, and while Elle reminds the others to stay on course, those watching say she has to land in Toyama, which Iiboshi says is a strange coincidence. This is where Hisone lives, and when she steps out to help her mom with the laundry, she hears Masotan and rushes off. She texts Nao, and though Iiboshi and Sosoda want to rendezvous with her, Remi firmly states she ran off to be a civilian. Hisone believes she can't sit by when she heard Masotan call her. Crashing when she sees the truck carrying the others, it's time for an impassioned plea to fly again.
What started as a simple, happy story I liked for sitting back to watch has become a rather grim story with a terrifying situation.
Now that Mitatsu is awake, everyone is in danger, especially because of the situation with Masotan and Hisone quitting. Along with there being a massive dragon roaming the sky near Japan, he's causing an enormous typhoon, meaning even if he does nothing, it could hurt people. Mitatsu's design, despite only partially being shown, is nothing short of menacing, with a size that dwarfs even Futomomo and rough fins for his aquatic nature. Whereas the other OTFs are rather simple in their appearance without their plane parts, Mitatsu is greatly detailed, with a rough, unnerving appearance. In a way, it reminded me of the whale-like creature "Sin" from Final Fantasy 10, which (don't hurt me) is the only FF game I've played much. Despite being a menacing sight, the artists don't make him just a monstrosity, either; he's a clear danger, but unlike Sin doesn't seem malevolent. Accordingly, there's quite a beauty in his silhouette, and when the other dragons are directing him, he has a glow in certain spots on his body that coincide with yellow areas of the OTFs. Mitatsu bringing forth a typhoon is an obvious tip that he is essentially representing dangerous weather, being an unstoppable force that rears its head at times. This is another similarity I saw with the monstrous sea creature Sin, who arrives after some amount of time and causes havoc. The D-pilots might be directing Mitatsu, which we obviously can't do with storms, but for the most part they are people are having to go along with the beast. Along with the darker moments, the "Hiso Maso" moment of this episode and the credits seemed different, like when the opening changed. I could be wrong, but something about the "Hiso Maso" felt deeper this time, and the credits for this episode feature an instrumental of the closing song. These are perfect as the show gets closer to its end, with the "Hiso Maso" feeling more dramatic, and the closing song giving a somber feeling after a dark reveal. It's been interesting to see both Nao and then Hinomoto piloting Masotan, even if for a short time, and we learn a lot about the latter as a result. The revelation that she loved the Key Girl of her time surprised me, but makes perfect sense for why she seems hesitant about things and watched the maidens. In particular, the end of this episode finally gives a reason for her sorrowful looks, giving things a dark backstory despite some beauty surrounding it. We also learn a bit about Remi in this episode when we see her violent reaction to Hisone deciding to quit, and seeing she's actually like Nao. Just like the former bully, Remi had hoped to be a D-pilot, only for another girl to come in and take the position instead. Unlike Nao, who has found peace in the position she found herself in, Remi allowed her anger and jealousy to fester under the surface. Remi and Hisone's relationship was essentially like that of one of those "pageant moms" that push their daughters to extreme lengths to become pageant queens. Having lost her own dream but seeing a chance for Hisone, Remi becomes enraged upon hearing that she is willing to give it up, and at such a dangerous point. I had thought initially she was accepting Hisone because or the similarity to Masotan's previous pilot, and understood why she came to her decision. It turns out she had the exact opposite reaction, as the situation did remind her of Moriyama, but in the sense that Hisone was abandoning her comrades. To Hisone's credit, although she gets depressed as a result of Remi's anger, she gives actual thought to why her coworker was angry and if her actions were appropriate. Hisone's lack of a filter is likely part of why she couldn't make friends before, but her loneliness would then feed her difficulty to make friends. As a result, she doesn't always understand her own feelings, or how she should act with those she cares about, and and she jumps to conclusions easily. Since joining the airforce, however, she has learned to interact with people better, and now has to give thought to how she feels and how she should act. When she begs to pilot Masotan again, she explains to the others exactly why she did what she did, and why she realized she needs a different course than just leaving. The fact that Masotan flew toward her home is a good sign of their relationship and something that brings her to her conclusion, as Masotan can't know she lives there, but seems to know exactly how to get to her. Hisone's issues and decision might've caused problems for the group, but now the ritual is at hand, and there is a new problem for the group to deal with.
