Callum and the others take to the water with the eccentric Captain Villads, and as Amaya searches for the Sunfire elves, Viren starts connecting with his mirror friend.
Rayla wakes to Callum meditating, as he's decided even if he wasn't born with a Primal Source connection, he might be able to create one.
The group realizes they're dropping, and suddenly Phoe-Phoe crashes into the ground, with Rayla saving Ezran and Zym from falling off a cliff. Amaya watches the lava flow she battled a Sunfire elf at before suspiciously, and though another soldier says there's no sign of the elves and they get a signal from the Xadian outpost, she has him put together a party. Meanwhile in Katolis, Viren struggles to figure out who the elf on the other side of the mirror is, puzzled when they glance at his staff and walk away. Ezran explains to the others that Phoe-Phoe is tired from being away from the Moon Nexus, and sends her home; Callum is impressed he figured out the problem. Rayla points out the ocean path in front of them, and though she's anxious about crossing the water again, she turns down walking in favor of speed. The group heads to a port to search for a boat, and Callum says the captain needs to not hate elves. Rayla is in favor of pretending to be human again, and though her impression makes Ezran laugh, Callum rolls his eyes and leaves to search with Ez.
The figure on the other side of the mirror produces a chest containing a rock, black cloth, a mortar and pestle, a spindle, a drinking glass, and a knife. Viren determines they want him to find these things, and they smile when he assures them he will.
Callum returns to Rayla having found Captain Villads (Peter Kelamis), who won't see she's an elf as he's blind with two eyepatches, and his parrot Berto (Paula Burrows). He takes them to his ship, The Ruthless, and says a storm is brewing that will keep them there for a few days. With the storm intriguing Callum and Rayla wanting to cross quickly, he agrees to speed on right then, but warns the storm could kill them. While sailing, Villads explains a group of seagulls took his left eye, but he doesn't know what got the right, as it came at him from the left. Callum realizes the wind is pushing a different way than they're going, so Villads explains how the sails and water currents work. After some rough water, he says spending enough time on the sea gives you a sort of connection to the wind. Callum, thinking this has to do with magic, inquires further, but Villads misunderstands, then falls asleep for a moment due to narcolepsy. The storm arrives, causing Villads to chuckle, and while Callum is happy to potentially learn, Berto says he's just got a chance to learn how to drown.
Back in Katolis, Viren brings the items to the mirror, where the elf has him sew a rune he's never seen before into the cloth.
After breaking the rock while the cloth covers it, they then pour some of the rock's insides into the full glass, and although hesitant, Viren then drinks it. With a sword in place of the knife, Viren goes to cut his palm with the elf, but realizes he doesn't know who or what they are, so he leaves to think. Rayla starts getting sick as the storm batters the ship, and with Berto's help, Villads is able to expertly steer the ship to port at a nearby island. In the lava zone, Amaya leads her men to the outpost, finding it empty. A soldier arrives and claims he was late as the others went on patrol. He nervously signs "danger" to Amaya, and she leaps around him to block an arrow from Sunfire elves holding him captive. More arrive from all around, including the leader with the long Sunforge blade Amaya faced before. While Viren handles things in Katolis, Callum takes a dangerous trip with Zym, and Amaya fights to keep her men safe.
Although we still mostly see Callum and the others, I was more interested in Viren this episode, and was glad we got more time in Katolis.
After realizing the elf on the other side can see him, we and Viren have even more questions, as he still hasn't figured out what and who the mirror and elf are. They seem to be able to hear him, which makes it more puzzling that they seemingly refuse to speak, instead using motions and holding up things for Viren to interpret. He's almost as much in the dark as us, because while we know less about this magical world, he doesn't recognize the elf, and doesn't know the rune he sews. I was glad he eventually decides not to simply follow the elf's actions, in that it didn't make sense for him to be doing so. He obviously wants to know what's going on, and that seems to be the only way to learn, but like he says, he doesn't know who the elf is or if he can trust them. For someone as intelligent and calculating as Viren, it doesn't make sense for him to go along with a strange ritual he doesn't understand for someone he doesn't know. Like Viren, Amaya continues showing intelligence in this episode, being the only one logically thinking to investigate the Xadian post despite getting a smoke signal. Seeing through Viren was enough for me to see Amaya is smart, and now she takes an action that will both get the soldiers vital info and keep them safe. That is so far what she's actually done quite a bit this series, being a soldier in general, then trying to protect and then rescue the boys, and now guarding her men. The writers are also finding ways to make her being deaf important to the story, and a perfect way for her men to communicate discreetly. An empty base was suspicious enough, but then Amaya continuing to question things after the soldier's excuse led to him silently warning her about the elves, and by extension, saving his own life by getting her to act. It could seem questionable that the soldier they find knows the sign language word We see another alternate communication with Ezran this episode, as he again demonstrates his ability to hear animals by talking to Phoe-Phoe. I had been wondering when and why the phoenix would be leaving, as it didn't make sense that such a powerful ally would be permanent for the group. This would help greatly, but wouldn't fit well in a story, as it would lessen conflict and make things way easier, so we learn Phoe-Phoe needs to be near the Moon Nexus. There isn't too much else that happens with Ezran this episode, but I'd say this is mostly because of introducing Captain Villads, who I can't wait to see more of. As soon as Callum said Rayla's disguise wouldn't be needed, it became obvious the captain is blind, but that doesn't take away from the moment of the character. The Last Airbender comparisons will never cease for me, it seems, because Villads being blind reminded me of Toph, especially when he said that despite his handicap, he continues sailing partially by feeling things. He also later has Berto call out terms like "starboard" and "port" to direct him through a rocky area before the island, a good way to counter his blindness. Having him wear two eyepatches was funny, and I got a laugh when he tells how he lost one eye, but doesn't know the reason for the other because of losing the first. Him being voiced by Peter Kelamis also caught my attention. Some likely know him as a past Goku, and he was also the voice of Rolf from Ed, Edd, n' Eddy. Him being Rolf was the only assurance I needed to believe Villads will be a funny, kooky character, and thus far he doesn't disappoint. With a crazy personality, his blind stunts, narcoleptic moments, and crazy willingness to go to sea risking a storm, Villads is already proving to be a fun character for me. Callum and the others are halted for the moment, but have to get back on their journey, and as their aunt defends against the Sunfire elves, Viren's plotting continues.
