Queen Dagmar's revival and following feud with Oona causes problems for the kingdom, and everyone becomes suspicious when people start getting petrified.
Though still mourning Elfo, Bean is amazed to see her mom (Sharon Horgan), explaining how she was petrified for 15 years, and receives a hug in return.
They return to the castle, where the guards are shocked but let them in, and everyone stares in awe before they get to the amazed Zøg. They talk about how much time has past and decide to throw Dagmar a feast, complete with fireworks that form her image. Sorcerio and Odval later talk about how their "magic elf blood malarkey" worked, with the former making a slight fourth wall break mentioning that it took all season. The Herald introduces Dagmar at the party, and while Zøg is happy to have her, his words are misinterpreted when Oona walks in, and she and Dagmar swap glares. Odval introduces them, and Oona storms out after she and Dagmar trade insults. Zøg assures Dagmar his remarriage was for the resulting canal and his heir, but Dagmar is angry that an "amphibian" was allowed to raise Bean. Bean and Zøg say she was more raised by others, and bring up how they searched everywhere to get the elixir to bring her back. Bean remembers Elfo, whose sacrifice prompts Dagmar to suggest a funeral. Everyone attends as Elfo is carried like Snow White in a glass coffin to a hill. Everyone mourns, including the returning Tess, who gives back her "glass eye" because always seeing the truth is too painful. Oona arrives, annoyed that she was left behind, and when she demands the spot next to Zøg, Dagmar sits on his lap. Bean delivers a touching eulogy about how these were the best months of her life thanks to Elfo, and she and Luci say their goodbyes. While leaving, Oona and Dagmar fight over entering the carriage first, and a fight ensues after Oona slaps Dagmar and the former queen slaps her back. Zøg asks them to stop, but they wrestle around, accidentally knocking Elfo into the sea, causing the enraged Bean to demand Oona leave.
Zøg and his court discuss the difficulties in choosing a queen, as while Dagmar is the love of his life and Oona is unpopular, the latter is the heir's mother.
Odval points out that offending her could spark a war with Dankmire, and Pendergast says she's no longer useful, suggesting she vanish, unaware she's listening, angry. Zøg is planning a romantic night with Dagmar when Bean and Luci enter; the Queen decides to instead spend the night with her daughter. Zøg protests, but only mutters when she says this is her chance to talk with a non-mumbling parent, and she kicks him and Luci out. The two males head upstairs and Zøg enters his room after failing to follow Oona, and Luci is surprised to find a horrified-looking Pendergast statue. Dagmar again spurns Zøg's advances, this time for brunch, in favor of riding with Bean, and Luci asks how he ended up in such a pitiful state. Zøg explains he was a warrior before, only becoming king after his brother was poisoned. He only wanted to compete in things until he saw Dagmar at an event. Smitten with this noble's daughter from a far-off land, their life was perfect, especially after Bean's birth, until the night of Dagmar's petrification. He explains that by this point, he had forgotten about his brother's death, and chose not to wait for the tardy taste tester when Odval brought up wine from the cellar. Dagmar and Bean, meanwhile, arrive at a tower the latter visits occasionally, and she is surprised to learn he mother used to as well, and they have other similarities. While they go to the pub, Oona meets with Odval in the castle, afraid she'll soon be gotten rid of, so he sends an urgent message to Dankmire. He doesn't want the royal family to know, but Oona swears vengeance on Zøg, Dagmar, and Bean. Bunty overhears and rushes off to warn Bean. Bean is amazed at how well her mother gets along with everyone, like she never left, and Dagmar apologizes for not being there, occasionally heckling a dart player. Bean expresses her annoyance with Zøg, and after stating that a girl just needs her mother, Dagmar promises to never leave again. Later, Bean stumbles drunk into the castle, barely missing Oona, and finds Bunty in her room. As she slurs a conversation, she realizes Bunty has been petrified. Horrified, she runs for help, but finds Sorcerio and the knights as statues as well, leaving only Zøg and Odval to meet with.
When Zøg decides to take action, Bean is certain Oona is responsible, but Odval reminds them Zøg would be going to war with Dankmire, without his cabinet.
Dagmar storms in, angry that Odval would question Zøg's combat prowess, and the adviser gives up talking strategy when Zøg complains about his heavy clothes. Bean and Dagmar convince Zøg, and he has Derek locked in the tower for protection before Odval reveals Oona has disappeared. They ask the magic orb, and it says that Oona is still in Dreamland, then warns that "the danger is near." Bean tries asking a question, but a strange spark of black energy connect her hand and the ball, and Dagmar hastily ends the meeting. Zøg and Odval leave to find Oona, and Dagmar then presses a hidden switch that moves the room's bookcase, revealing a staircase to a library Zøg doesn't know. Luci sees the wall close and asks the ball what happened; it shows a holographic image of the meeting, and he is able to rewind to Bean's strange moment. He decides to look into the past, making a discovery as Dagmar has a chat with Bean, and Zøg and Odval try to find the missing Oona. Though everyone is closing in on the truth, none of them are ready for what they're about to discover.
Though sometimes this show didn't always hit the mark, I've been glad to watch it and felt this was a perfect finale to end the season.
Dagmar's return is obviously a big deal, but while the first thing you'd likely think is about everyone's joy to have her back, there are the political issues to take care of. Oona is rightfully angry to find herself getting tossed aside in favor of the new king, and while Zøg has the love of his life back, he needs to be careful, especially because, like Odval points out, Oona is the mother of the heir and part of a fragile alliance. There is quite a bit of melancholy early in the episode, as although Dagmar's return is met with joy, there is still the death of Elfo to take care of. As he was such a happy character, and a main protagonist at that, Elfo's death was quite a shock, and seeing the others being serious is rare for this show. Earlier aspects of the season return in this episode, with the truth of Dagmar's poisoning revealed and a possible hint shown at her heritage. We also get a surprising moment at the party as Odval mentions the "elf blood malarkey" to Sorcerio, essentially revealing they made up everything in an attempt to appease Zøg. Quite a situation to result from a few lies. Throughout the episode, I was thoroughly interested in the mystery of what was going on, as the always mysterious Odval has teamed up with Oona for some reason, and we're seeing other groupings form as some info is gained and other info is hidden. Especially curious to me was Bean's magical moment touching the orb, as up to this point she's appeared a normal human, but not we know there's more to her. There's also a hint at the possible return of Elfo after his body disappears, just one of many things perfectly used to set up an exciting second season. I'd honestly almost forgotten, but there's also the issue of Merkimer still stuck as a pig to be resolved. Boy, that prince certainly can't catch a break! It would be entertaining if any effort to return him to normal failed and he were left a pig for at least a majority of the series, but for now we don't know what will happen. With an exciting and shocking final episode, Disenchantment was a lot of fun to watch and I can't for the second season to be released.
