Glimmer and Bow are excited for Adora to experience the princess prom, but a member of the Fright Zone has an invite as well.
Adora comes to her friends confused about an invitation she received; Bow and Glimmer excitedly proclaim it's for the "princess prom." They explain it's a party where all the princesses meet, and only happens once every decade.
Unnerved after learning there'll be dancing, Adora isn't sure she's invited, but Glimmer assures her she's a true princess, and Bow says everything is in the long invitation. Adora laughs at the stuffy etiquette for the event, and the others say her that while it's centuries old and required, the party will be fun. Glimmer says Princess Frosta is hosting in the Kingdom of Snows, and her powerful magic would be an enormous asset to the rebellion. She promises the nervous Adora they'll go as a trio, but Bow cuts in that he's going with Perfuma, not Glimmer. Meanwhile in the Fright Zone, Catra rants to Scorpia that Shadow Weaver's obsession with Adora and disobeying Hordak will drag them down, suggesting they revolt. Scorpia seems uncaring, and Catra struggles to decide how she can both catch Adora to prevent her own demotion and impress Hordak to replace SW. Scorpia, holding a princess ball invitation, suggests she start there, and shocks Catra by shrugging that it was sent to her, since she's a princess. She explains her kingdom let the Horde stay after the latter crash-landed, even giving Hordak their Runestone the Black Garnet. Catra is still surprised, but Scorpia calls it common knowledge, covered in Force Captian Orientation. Scorpia doesn't want to go herself, as the princesses were uncomfortable with her before her family joined Hordak, and as a result they just didn't like her. Catra declares this the perfect reason to go, as they shouldn't be allowed to abandon people just for being different, and Scorpia happily agrees. Back in Bright Moon, Bow tells Glimmer that Perfuma was "slick" and asked him; she did so in battle. Glimmer mentions they have a routine for these things, but Bow says there's no harm in new things, and assures her he'll hang out with her and Adora. Adora suddenly yanks Glimmer into a makeshift strategy room, where she has posters on the walls and is preparing for everything involved at the ball. She has Glimmer test her, stating the neutral Frosta is a first-time host and has the largest kingdom after Bright Moon; Mermista's friends the "Star Sisters" are her allies. Adora planned to go as She-Ra, rather than planning an outfit, but Glimmer points out she can't, as the neutral location has a strict no-weapons policy. Though Adora wants to just get back to studying, Glimmer decides it's time for a makeover, and tries to help her friend out as Bow, Catra, and Scorpia also prepare.
As Glimmer and Adora enter the ball later, the former explains how it's a huge rite of passage for princesses, and the latter again brings up how helpful Frosta could be.
The two bow to Frosta (Merit Leighton), but Adora is caught off-guard after seeing how young the princess is, drawing attention with an outburst. Glimmer keeps up the etiquette and explains who they are, and Frosta welcomes them before having her guards shove them back to the party. The two bicker for a moment befroe deciding they still have time to win her over, and as they stand awkwardly on the side, Adora spots Entrapta. The inventor says she's watching the "social experiment" of the party, explaining it's a perfect way to watch different groups come together and form hierarchies. She asks about Bow, which annoys Glimmer, and the latter becomes more upset after noticing Bow and Perfuma entering in matching outfits. Mermista arrives as well, but doesn't want to know about Glimmer's rage nor what Entrapta's doing. She instead starts asking if they've seen someone, but is caught off as Sea Hawk sings nearby about how he's with her. Embarrassed, she asserts he's just her ride, but he whispers to Adora that he is Mermista's plus one. Entrapta declares this the best social experiment she's been to, and the annoyed Mermista heads off for food with Sea Hawk in tow. As Bow and Perfuma arrive, Glimmer interrupts Adora's greeting to pretend they have an inside joke. Bow says he was laughing because Perfuma was telling him about a winged horse that ate Plumeria's apples. A jealous Glimmer pretends to not care and says how much fun she and Adora are having by themselves, not noticing her friend has walked off to scarf down food. Puzzled, Bow goes to mingle, and Glimmer decides to stay with Adora. Adora notices a dour Frosta nearby and apologizes for her prior rudeness; Frosta pompously says Adora didn't know better since she's just an honorary princess. Frosta surprises Adora as she tries small talk by revealing she knows they want her in the rebellion, but she's more concerned with food touching on a platter. Adora says the Kingdom of Snows could be the key to beating the Horde, claiming the only reason the evil forces haven't attacked them is unimportant to Hordak at the moment because of its location, and joining the rebellion would help them. Frosta snarls that her kingdom has been fine on its own and doesn't need Adora or the rebellion, then again tells Adora to enjoy the ball and walks away.
Having failed to convince Frosta, Adora returns to Glimmer, finding her staring at Bow. She asks why it's such a big deal, and Glimmer explains she never had many friends other than Bow, and she's now worried he likes them more than her.
Adora assures her that she and Bow wouldn't just leave their friends behind, just as she spots Catra and Scorpia enter. She rushes to Frosta and urges her to not let them in, but Catra brings up Scorpia's invitation and brown-noses her way in as Frosta scolds Adora. Adora complains, so Frosta angrily declares that she has worked hard to gain respect and won't let Adora destroy that just because she thinks they're up to something. The prom has long been neutral, and the two are allowed to stay if following tradition. Still certain of deceit after being tossed away, Adora declares she'll follow the two the whole time, telling Glimmer to follow Scorpia when they split up. She follows the cocky Catra and sees her put something in a box, only to realize it's a trash can and Catra put a note saying "Hi Adora." She realizes everyone is staring at her, but more importantly she notices Catra approaching Entrapta. As Scorpia is busy with the food table, Glimmer decides to talk to Bow. As she seems to be heading for an apology, he accepts, but it turns out she's forgiving him. Irritated, he says he's allowed to have other friends, and she desperately says this thinking is the beginning of everyone forgetting her. He points out she has him, Adora, and the rebellion, and she says this is part of everything changing for them. Still confused, Bow tells her he wanted to hang with her, Adora, and Perfuma, but she's the one who kept being weird and leaving. Saying she doesn't have the right to take her fears out on him, Bow leaves to get his cummerbund, and Glimmer realizes Scorpia is gone. Above, Adora jumps in when Catra reaches for Entrapta, who is leaning on a railing, only for her former friend to pull the princess back from leaning too far. Catra continues playing innocent, and Adora reminds Entrapta of who Catra and the Horde are to her and the rebellion; Entrapta notes that Catra is gone. Meanwhile, Bow spots Scorpia and realizes she's planting heat bombs, but the guards he alerts grab him. Scorpia returns with Adora's sword and knocks him out. With Catra and Scorpia's attack underway and Adora skating on thin ice with Frosta (pun somewhat intended), the rebellion has a problem on their hands at the prom.
Much like the first time we saw Mermista and Sea Hawk, this episode started as something I was unsure of and then became an episode I quite enjoyed.
At its start, I wasn't thinking much of what was to come, since the focus was to be a prom, where I figured not much of interest to me would happen. The show quickly counters this, however, by having Glimmer point out Adora can't even bring her sword in, since the location and party are neutral. Especially since we as the audience learn Catra and Scorpia plan to attend, this puts the rebellion at a disadvantage since they won't be fighting or have She-Ra. Catra really shows off quite a bit of intellect in this episode, as more than just knowing what she needs to do to overthrow Shadow Weaver, she comes up with a cunning plan to circumvent the neutral status of the prom. Whereas we've mostly seen her seeming more consistently upset about having lost Adora than vice versa, due simply to Adora seeing what her friend is doing, this time she's manipulating her old friend and taunting her. Catra is easily able to manipulate Adora in this episode, knowing she'll be watching her, allowing her to get what she wants and ruin Adora's reputation with Frosta. Glimmer's fears and jealousy in this episode are understandable, and definitely give depth to her character by showing she fears being alone. We haven't delved into her past yet, but it's been mentioned before that she never had many friends, so now that Bow is easily making friends, she's starting to feel like she's being abandoned. However, as Bow points out, this doesn't give her permission to take it out on him, especially since she at first refuses to tell him how she feels. As a person who often shuts people out when he's upset, I understand this, but I always hated things in shows and movies like here, where Glimmer acts so strange and rudely around Bow. Perhaps it's just me, but I've always found it ridiculous when characters would feel jealous and basically spend the rest of an episode essentially shouting to everyone "I'M NOT JEALOUS! TOTALLY NOT! I HAVE A BETTER FRIEND HERE!" Like I said, though, this does show Glimmer's insecurity, and much like in Entrapta's episode, this one has Bow be more serious and rather mature. Scorpia got some quick development this episode, which I was glad about, and it's pretty interesting to learn she was essentially shunned. With Game of Thrones such a big deal at the moment, I got thinking back to a time where I read that George R.R. Martin, giving advice on writing characters simply said to make them "human," giving them good and bad qualities, like real people. Obviously from what we've seen, the Rebellion is the "good" side while the Horde is evil, but we're starting to learn of the princesses' own faults. Thus far, Scorpia has been a rather nice, entertaining character, and the reason she and her people joined Hordak is because the princesses were judgmental. In a way, the princesses created one of their own enemies, because of their own pride and stuck-up prejudices which we can see Frosta gaining. At the same time that we learn this about Scorpia, we see that Catra is still irked about Adora leaving, since while telling Scorpia they can make the princesses pay for judging her, she brings in that they "stole" a friend. Another episode that started off weak for me but developed strongly, I was very pleased with the ending and now there's some high stakes for the next episode.
