When Mickey and Pluto unwittingly chop down Chip and Dale's tree to use for Christmas, the chipmunks spend the night tormenting the dog.
Mickey and Pluto kick things off with the latter frolicking as Mickey searches for a good tree to chop down for Christmas.
The pooch's joy catches the attention of Chip and Dale, who pelt him with acorns and mock him, causing him to chase the chipmunks and ending up plowing into a hill. The chipmunks return to their tree to gloat, but their fun is interrupted when Mickey chops the tree down. Dale escapes the tree as Mickey drags it back to the house, but is forced to climb back in when he sees Pluto trotting along behind them. Inside, Mickey decorates the tree as the chipmunks sleep, with Pluto offering ornaments strung along his tail. Chip wakes Dale, and the two walk along the branches soaking in the new Christmas beauty of their home. Dale notices Mickey putting candy canes on the branches, but one he tries to get one, Mickey instead hangs an ornament. This startles the chipmunk at first, but he soon becomes interested in the bauble and brings it to Chip, whose quick turn to see what his brother brought results in him shoving his head straight into the ornament. Chip gives Dale a few whacks to the head, and when Mickey finishes his decorating, he leaves and Pluto hears a sound coming from the tree. When he investigates, he finds Dale playing with a light; the chipmunk mistakes Pluto's nose for a light and gives it a twist, causing Pluto to pull back and see him. Chip pulls his brother back to safety with a candy cane, and Pluto has to react fast when Dale throws ornaments from the tree. Pluto catches all the ornaments, but Mickey thinks he's simply messing around, and when he puts one back, he doesn't notice Dale pull it higher up the tree, then pull it inside with him. With Mickey unaware of what's going on and the chipmunks feeling emboldened, Pluto takes it upon himself to battle the duo.
This is one short from my childhood that I haven't seen in a long time, but going back it's just as entertaining as it was when I was younger.
It's not long, but it's full of Disney charm and is such a simple idea that is done perfectly, as it's simply taking a look at what happens when Mickey happens to cut down Chip and Dale's tree, and they decide to have fun with Pluto. The art is beautiful, as one would expect from Disney, especially when you get shots that are engrossed in Christmas, like the picture above inside the tree. The ornaments are all beautifully colored, and shine in the light of the tree, with everything well-designed. It's easy for that kind of stuff to go overall unnoticed since it's the background, but it makes the cartoon all the better and is a sign of the care given to it. Classic cartoon humor is present throughout this episode, with Chip and Dale easily running circles around Pluto and making him look like a fool. We also get an old-fashioned joke when Pluto first chases the chipmunks, when he slams into a hill of snow and a snow version of him pops out of the other side. Mickey's timing is impeccable, of course, as when he comes into the room, both chipmunks are already back in the tree, and by the time Pluto is able to point out a moving ornament to him, it's gone, causing him to not believe his pooch. Though Pluto spends much of the episode frustrated because of Chip and Dale, he and Mickey are perfectly festive to match the backgrounds. Mickey whistles Christmas music and has the house set up for the holiday, and the episode ends in a lovely way along with a classic joke. Fans of classic Disney should definitely take the small amount of time needed to give this a watch as Christmas gets closer.
