Matt and Nadeem investigate Dex while Foggy and Karen take different paths from the same plan base to take down Fisk.
Still on a high after attacking the Bulletin, Dex returns home and pulls out his tapes to listen to while he cleans.
Ray goes to work after his talk with Matt, suspicious of his coworkers as he looks through their files, pausing on Dex. After checking their time log, he checks a camera behind their Fisk-watching setup and sees Dex shutting their cams off twice. Dex, meanwhile, catches Julie while she's jogging to apologize, and explains that she's the kind of caring person he needs right now, asking to just talk somewhere. Matt meets Nadeem in an alley, and though the agent is wary because of the former's methods, Matt reminds him the FBI is more helping Fisk at the moment. Matt says he understands a "greater good" mentality, and Nadeem demands Matt's word to not harm Dex during their search. He plans to search Dex's apartment and leave any evidence they find, then pull a fire alarm to avoid a search warrant. After some prodding, he finally gives Dex's name. The sharpshooting agent is at a coffee shop with Julie, and she's not comforted when he says he was never "into" or stalking her, but rather wanted to be like her. He explains that without the FBI or military's structure, he's losing it; he commends her when she calms him, asking that she treat him like a suicide hotline caller. She agrees to help him after learning of his past therapist's death, and he gets a text from Nadeem before it is implied someone is watching through a camera.
Foggy goes to Karen's, surprised to find she hasn't slept, and theorizes that Fisk is getting rid of corrupt people so he can take their place as government protector.
He claims to have a plan, but a hopeless Karen says Fisk is always ready for every plan, and still says no when he says there's no way Fisk could know. Still trying to persuade her, Foggy shows the terms for Fisk's incarceration, citing a rule to not commit or conspire to commit a felony, as their key. Karen, however, focuses on being charged with a crime from before the agreement, thinking of Fisk's dad, but Foggy says two dead people supposedly talked about this. Foggy believes that having her publicize his theory would get the FBI to do something, when she covers a debate he plans to have with Tower. Though agreeing it's a good plan, riling Tower up, she reveals she was fired and the reason why; Foggy suggests she share the plan with Ellison to get her job back. At the hotel, Fisk watches two men kill a suspecting worker so Felix Manning can waltz in, and Dex arrives to suspicious glares. To his surprise, Nadeem leads him to an attorney who says they can sue the bureau for wrongful termination, and the others paid with a collection. Nadeem leaves him happily and meets Matt at Dex's apartment, and though Nadeem feels unsure and FBI agent would fall for Fisk's words, Matt says he waits until you're vulnerable and attacks your weakness. While Nadeem takes notice of the broken photo and wall, Matt smells the suit and surprises Nadeem by getting into Dex's safe, but doesn't find the suit. Nadeem says they have nothing tying Dex to anything, but Matt notices the tape recorder and plays a session where Dex talked about killing birds with rocks.
Back at the hotel, Dex is horrified to learn it will take at least six months to be reinstated, and begins to break down when he texts Julie and she tells him to leave her alone and blocks his number.
Matt and Nadeem are listening to another tape as the latter puts the others back and the former notices Dex returning. The two argue, since Matt feels this evidence is good enough and wants to fight, and Dex, hearing them, grabs some crystals from a nearby fixture and enters. Noticing his headphones on the table and his safe open, Dex grabs a pistol and binocular, hearing the two upstairs. He uses their reflections in a window across the street to ricochet his bullets into their room, wounding Nadeem; Matt keeps track of his ammo and tells Nadeem when to go for the door. Matt uses what he can find to block Dex's projectiles while climbing the fire escape, and Nadeem is forced to hide when police arrive looking for them. He gets to safety when police make Dex stop, and he tells them what's going on; Matt reveals he still have the recorder and a tape. Sitting outside the spot for Foggy's debate, Karen instead drives away, leaving her friend confused as she instead goes to Fisk's hotel. She finds a wall when two agents don't want to let her speak to him, saying he'll tell her to go away, but she convinces them claiming she's writing about Fisk's mom. Foggy starts his questioning amidst a heckling audience, and delivers his theory that Fisk is trying to get rid of his competition. Tower feels that Foggy is just pandering, but Foggy claims to have all the evidence he needs in his folder; Tower still says his argument doesn't hold up in court. Foggy begins a claim that passion is on his side here, but realizes something as he notices Karen's place card and rushes out, leaving everyone laughing. The episode then reaches a climax with Foggy trying to get to Karen as she makes a bold attempt at getting Fisk, and as Dex makes a big decision about his future, Matt makes a bombshell discovery after returning to the church.
This episode showed us multiple relationships being forged or facing difficulties and gave a new style of action.
Due to Matt's actions in the previous episode, and everything going on, he and Matt have forged a tentative partnership, finding good reason to suspect Dex. They're obviously not best buddies all of a sudden, but we get some good moments where they quip at each other, and they work effectively while searching and escaping. This is where the different kind of action comes in, as most of the time in this series we get straight-up fights, but here it's Matt and Nadeem trying to avoid Dex's shots. Matt has shown rather Batman-like abilities to sneak before, and here he shows his intelligence and ability to maneuver around gunfire. Nadeem is in a bad position now, however, as Dex managed to get him with a shot and saw him as he was escaping. For Dex, who has been struggling and a short time before trusted Nadeem due to his support, this has to be a massive blow that could push him toward Fisk. Because of this, Nadeem is now dealing with a gunshot wound in his side, putting him at a disadvantage, and more threats from Fisk and Dex. In a way, this means the new relationship between Matt and Nadeem helped build the one Fisk is working on with Dex, as well. At the same time that Dex has this new relationship, his world was again shattered after Julie blocked his number. Earlier in the episode, he tried his hardest to even talk to her and convince her he isn't a stalker, and though he'd succeeded. I honestly found it a bit strange that she was willing to give him another chance, and even more so when she met with him in the cafe. From what I've gathered from the Internet and friends, such a situation would seem to me like a terrifying thing to encounter, especially knowing Dex is unstable and has a military background. Initially, I chalked this up to strange writing, as it seemed more likely to me that she would send him away immediately. However, the danger could be the exact reason she agreed to meet with him, especially because she got to choose such a public place. In that moment, even if he says he'll accept a no, it makes sense that she wouldn't believe him, but once she's got him feeling like he succeeded, she's able to leave. Once out of danger, she was then able to send her true feelings and block him, and I wouldn't be surprised if she headed out of town. Foggy and Karen's relationship takes a bit of a downward turn this episode, due to the attack on the Bulletin having shaken Karen's confidence. After seeing what Fisk is capable of doing even when imprisoned, Karen is terrified, and it's easy to see how she'd feel helpless. Foggy might have a plan, but it's still something risky, and thus far risks have only led to problems for her, so although they are still friends, they hit a slight rock. This is especially true later, as Karen choose to forego Foggy's debate in favor of going after Fisk, which is also a sign that Karen still takes incredible risks. This is both a testament to Karen's tenacity and one to Foggy's patience and forgiveness, as his immediate reaction upon realizing what Karen is doing is to rush off, abandoning an important moment to save her. New relationships are forged in this episode that will to present some interesting situations to come, especially with Fisk now having an agent directly at his side.
