The Rugrats get their first taste of the Halloween season, desperate to get their hands on some Reptar Bars! Didi kicks things off carving a jack-o-lantern, mesmerizing Tommy. Tommy shares his confusion with what's going on with the other babies, and Angelica brags that she gets a "Reptar Bar." Annoyed that they don't understand, she produces a candy bar shaped like their favorite dinosaur, Reptar. She dances around reciting its commercial, revealing it turns one's tongue green and she gets one because it's "Hollyween" (rhyme unintended but enjoyed). Angelica explains that's why everyone is dressing up and that she can go trick-or-treating, though even she doesn't know what that means. The babies later see the adults carting around Reptar Bars, and decide to get some for themselves as the adults set up a haunted house. Stu and Drew are excited about the night, though Didi thinks their setup is too scary, especially the babies, particularly after Grandpa Lou arrives in a creepy mask. She relents that Angelica might be old enough, and Grandpa goes into a typical "old person rant" about how he and his brother used to face scarier things while going door-to-door, 15 miles between houses. Hearing kids outside, the parents prepare the house and exit, and the babies are left confused seeing the kids outside. They are further bewildered upon seeing Didi dress as a vampire and Stu finish up his Frankenstein costume. Some kids go into the haunted house, and the babies are amazed when they scream and rush out with Reptar Bars, "removing their faces" on the way. Tommy decides they need to scream to get Reptar Bars, and though Chuckie isn't convinced, Tommy declares that everything's different on "Hollyween." They all belt out some screams, scaring away some kids and making Didi and Stu think the kids upset them. Didi closes the curtains and the babies, left upset again, decide they need to get into the haunted house before they scream, though Chuckie is afraid of going in. The babies infiltrate the haunted house, amazed and excited as they wander around, and their unexpected arrival causes some scares for everyone else. This is one of a few Nickelodeon specials that I not only have at my house; I have them on a classic orange VHS tape!
Rugrats has always been a charming source of wholesome entertainment for both kids and parents alike. Tommy of course was always the brave leader, and here is the one repeatedly suggesting ideas for getting Reptar Bars, while the nervous Chuckie is unsure. As they're still babies, they don't really understand Halloween, and as such, don't know what's going on around them, especially what their parents are doing. Angelica, like always, gives them her somewhat incorrect explanation of how things work, even mispronouncing the holiday as "Hollyween." The show was always rather simple, aside from the movies, of course, and as such, their goal for the episode is straightforward: they're babies, they see candy; of their dinosaur hero, no less; and they want the candy. They of course plan several ways to get it, and in the process end up unintentionally causing mischief for the unaware adults and Angelica. Unlike some specials, this is only the length of a typical episode, but it's 12 minutes of fun for people to enjoy either as solo fans or with their families.
