With the licensing exam under way, the U.A. students face trouble when the other schools gang up on them. Last episode we learned the rules of the test: students have three markers on their bodies and six balls to hit others with. They must eliminate two other players, and along with only getting the point for hitting a person's final marker, only the first 100 students to do so will pass. We head to Aizawa and Ms. Joke, talking about the tradition of U.A. being hazed due to the other schools seeing their quirks during the sports festival, which Midoriya realized and mentioned to the others. The two note that while many students will likely be fooled into thinking the test is meant to get them trying quickly as soon as possible to win, it's more about teamwork and being able to think quickly. Ketsubutsu's Shikkui uses his "stiffening" quirk on the balls (how hard I tried to make that a less-mockable sentence) and passes them to Itejiro, who uses his boomerang quirk to send the balls underground, saying they won't know where his perfect aims will come from. This is foiled, however, when Jiro uses an upgrade on her suit to send soundwaves through the ground, shattering it. The balls fly out and at Mineta, but Mina saves him with her own improved quirk, impressing Ms. Joke. Tokoyami uses his Dark Shadow cloak, now named "Black Ankh, to Midoriya's approval, along with another move to attack Tatami, who evades using her ability to retract into her own body like a turtle. As Shindo notes U.A.'s improved abilities, Mera says no one has passed yet, causing Midoriya to realize everyone is being cautious about their foes. Ms. Joke warns Aizawa, who had said U.A. might have better students if everyone expected them to fail a situation heroes should expect, not to get cocky, saying her students could change how things are going. Shindo uses his ability to shatter the ground, separating everyone and getting the attention of even far away competitors. As groups of students prepare in the city area, Yoarashi uses his destructive whirlwind quirk to steal everyone's balls. Saying he wants to share his excitement as everyone else is getting pumped, he hurls the balls down, becoming the first victor by eliminating 120 people at once. Midoriya escapes the rubble Shindo caused, but finds everyone has been separated just before Camie Utsushimi from Shiketsu tags one of his weak points. As Uraraka elsewhere devises a plan to stay safe and regroup, Midoriya dodges Camie, who is using a strange technique to seemingly disappear and he believes is stalling until her classmates can arrive. He avoids being tagged again, but she pins him to the ground and explains her disappearing act is merely a technique, not her quirk. Midoriya escapes her grasp, but Ketsubutsu students surround them. Uraraka arrives as he evades, calling out to him and catching their attention. He leaps into action, thinking back to his inability to save Bakugou at camp. In Midoriya's mind, his reckless destruction of his arms to save Kota was the first domino in a row that led to All Might using up his own power to beat All For One. Finally having realized he can't just use One For All at maximum power all the time and needs more strength, Midoriya uses full cowling along with his new iron-soled shoes to save Uraraka and distract the attackers by destroying their ground. After hiding, Uraraka acts strangely and tries to tag one of Midoriya's weak points. To her surprise, he whips a hand back and knocks her ball away.
He reveals he noticed oddities in her behavior, like recklessly revealing herself when he was surrounded and never even trying to use her quirk despite all the work she put into improving it at camp. She reveals herself as Camie, now seemingly naked, and attacks, but she is forced to retreat when Sero and the real Uraraka arrive. Midoriya stops Sero from chasing Camie, noting how strange it is they can't see her target despite her apparently being naked, and shares the embarrassingly shocking news to them of her ability to camouflage herself as Uraraka. While Midoriya and the others try to plan in their somewhat improved position, Todoroki finds himself having to think on the fly as he encounters a group of ninjas. Continuing the previous episode's need to bring in numerous new characters for the exam, we learn a lot more about U.A.'s competitors this time around. Much like at the beginning of the series, we quickly learn which new characters will really matter, and get a rundown of their quirk upon its first usage. While it could have made a great final reveal, Yoarashi's explosive victory gave fans a look at how such a strange guy could be stronger than Todoroki. Though the others realize it's not good for use in cities, due to its destructive capabilities, they are all amazed at the devastation Yoarashi is able to cause with a single attack, as he even shocked Mera into waking. Along with his power, Yoarashi seems to have a scary amount of control over his attacks as well, having hit 120 people's marks in a single try. His whirlwind was hurling numerous balls at once, but with such a seemingly unpredictable attack, it could have been possible that the balls could miss. By directly hitting 120 people on three small, specific spots, Yoarashi has shown that he has both control and power, making him quite a powerhouse. To non-readers, Camie is a definite mystery for now, with an uncanny ability to sneak around and a somewhat-disturbing quirk letting her disguise herself as others. She has a strange fixation with Midoriya, wanting to know all about him and why he wants to be a hero in the first place, though she gets no answers. Midoriya shows maturity in this episode, having finally learned from his mistakes in the past, though he seems to be putting too much blame on himself for All Might's fight against All For One. As someone who spends a lot of time thinking about how past events relate to one another and led me to where I and others are today, I know it can be easy to fall into a trap of blaming yourself for a situation because of some action or inaction. Midoriya seems overall still optimistic, however, having come up with his new fighting style and finally making use of suit upgrades like the others. Thanks to Yoarashi's powerhouse attack and the sudden increased speed of others, U.A.'s students are left with little time to pass the exam, so next episode will show us who all is up to the test after their hard work.
