While Davos sets out to use the powers he stole from Danny, Misty and Colleen try to piece together what's going on and find Danny. Having stolen the iron fist, Davos relishes in his new power, remembering his youth when he and Danny were in training. Even then, he had more brutal ideas for the fist's abilities, and though he assured Danny he wouldn't hurt his brother even if the latter joined the Hand, his mother Priya (Gita Reddy) says he would, and that this is precisely why he'll be the one to face Shou-Lao. In the present, Davos hears a man begging for mercy from some debt sharks, so he steps in and kills them. He assures the terrified man that he's here to help and learns the men were from the Golden Tigers, then leaves when the man tells him where to find them. Meanwhile, Misty theorizes that Mary wasn't alone, since she doesn't seem the type to fight, and reassures a worried Colleen that Danny likely still won. Colleen points out that Danny still hasn't returned, and Misty suggests tracking Mary down; they could potentially trace her past phone call, but she first wants to try getting her prints from the photos of Danny. With Colleen frustrated that she let Danny leave when she knew something was up with Mary, Misty points out that Danny makes his own choices, and they will help him. Colleen gives Misty the drawing as well, and Misty assures her the matter has her full attention, as she's taking a few days off to think about the promotion she was offered in Luke Cage. Misty then takes another object to rule out Danny and Colleen's prints, but when she says it'll take 24 hours if she can get help, Colleen decides to visit someone else to take care of it. Out in the city, Walker drags a limp Danny to a bench, and with her phone out, she checks Danny's wounded side and wakes him with an adrenaline injection before leaving; the groggy and confused Danny limps away. Walker takes her phone to Joy, demanding that she watch it now so she can get paid, erase the video, and leave; Joy appears horrified watching the state Danny was in. She simply tells Walker it is what she asked for, and the latter thanks Joy for trusting her to get the job done. Walker notices that Joy is upset, and the latter brings up how she knew Danny as a kid, so it's strange how things have changed. Joy says she'll let Walker know when the money is ready, and Walker reminds Joy to pretend she never met her and make sure Davos does the same. In return for Joy's trust from before, Walker warns her to be careful about Davos. Joy thanks her, assuring her that their partnership is done, and Walker leaves her thinking about what she's done. Misty and Colleen meet with Ward on the streets, saying they wanted to be somewhere private. He introduces himself to Misty and makes comments about her prosthetic and the cost; she bites back and Colleen interrupts about Danny. Surprised to hear what happened and agreeing it shouldn't go public, Ward immediately agrees to have Rand security check out Mary's prints. Misty jokes about Colleen obviously not liking Danny and points out that she seems to be a good investigator; she asks about other leads on Mary and Colleen has her follow again. Elsewhere, Danny stumbles onto Rhyno's group who recognize him from what he did at the restaurant; they decide to take him to the Tigers and easily subdue him. Davos enters the Tigers' club, beating guards along the way and impressing Mr. Ho, who believes Davos's attack to be a tryout to join. After sending out men whom Davos easily beats, Ho steps forward himself, but Davos defeats him with his red iron fist. Chen Wu, missing an eye from the parlay, switches sides immediately, saying he can help Davos end the war and defeat every criminal. A text from Joy gets Davos's attention, and he tells Wu to meet him at the pier in two hours with a list of people, warning that he'll top the list if he doesn't show or tries anything funny. In a flashback, we see Davos broken after his trial with Danny, with Priya tending to his wounds and explaining his father won't be there, as Danny facing Shou-Lao is a "more important matter." Priya lists "excuses" she believes Davos is thinking for why he lost, and says she'd be happier barren than having brought this "failure" into life, chastising him for losing his birthright to an outsider. Davos declares repeatedly that he'll make his mother proud, staring down at his clenched but unempowered fist. Back in the present, Danny wakes in Rhyno's hideout; he says he can get them money, but they don't believe he has any because of his job. Danny tries to break his chain to escape, to his surprise only succeeding in injuring his hand, drained of his iron fist. Misty and Colleen, searching for clues about Mary, are surprised to learn workers at the cafe where Danny met Mary say they never saw a woman with the appearance they described. Misty tries to calm Colleen by bringing up Danny's supposed fighting skills but notices she's still upset; Colleen vents about how she wanted to leave this life behind. When she again laments that she could have done something, Misty points out that Danny is his own person who makes his own choices. As the two joke about relationships and Ward calling Misty's prosthetic a "Maserati arm," a call comes in about a possible suspect with abilities. Over at Rhyno's hideout, BB tells Rhyno, who needs Danny alive, that he might not make it. As BB tries to keep Danny hydrated, the latter recognizes him from the restaurant. Danny begs him to get Colleen, promising him help in return, but BB walks away. As Danny spits up blood, he warns BB that if he dies there, the young man will have to live with it. Joy returns to her apartment and finds Davos waiting; she tells him about the meeting with Walker and says she wants to separate to cover their tracks, asking for her key back. Davos admits that their plan of bringing Danny down has finished, he's not done working. Tentatively taking her key back, she points out that they didn't agree to more. Davos, on the other hand, is excited at finally having the fist and being able to do "what Danny couldn't," by using the fist instead of just having it. When she says she doesn't want this affecting her, Davos says she can't just hide a part of who she is and offers her a role in his new life. Joy requests time to consider, and Davos says he knows what she can do for both good and evil, warning her that her actions from now on will have consequences. Once he's gone, Joy makes a phone call, while his walk to the elevator triggers a flashback to when he left K'un-L'un, when he visited his mother. He tells her everything about going after Danny and points out that he could die, making this her potential last moment to tell him what she feels. Though she listens directly on the other side and seems to have nothing on her mind, she says nothing. He vows to make her proud enough of him that she can finally say what she wants to. Over at the Tigers' club, Misty is caught up on the situation; police are most interested in Ho, who was thrown against the wall so hard his spine was shattered and his skull caved in. The officer tells Misty they have escorts nearby who saw what happened; Misty and Colleen are surprised to learn they claim a man with a glowing red fist is the culprit. Though they know this was obviously not Danny, they wonder who else it could be just before Colleen gets a call from BB. At Rhyno's, two men come in with news about Ho; his words about the unknown fighter's glowing fist catches Danny's attention. With no deal possible, BB suggests they free Danny, but Rhyno simply has him brought over and BB reminds him of the money offer. Rhyno demands $500, but since Danny obviously doesn't have that much on him, he tries to break free; they subdue him again and Rhyno goes to cut off one of Danny's fingers. Misty and Colleen arrive just then, and though the gang thinks she's bluffing about shooting them, they listen and release Danny when she dents a pipe with her mechanical fist. Declaring that she and Colleen are leaving with Danny, Misty warns Rhyno about almost crossing a line and sends him away; Danny jokes about having everything handled as they leave. On the way out, Danny tells them about Davos and Mary, as well as his fist being gone; Misty immediately ties this to the club. Refusing a hospital, Danny tells them to call Ward to get him a Doctor; they relent and take him to the apartment where Ward arrives with Bethany. She hurriedly points out that she's just an anesthesiologist, but Ward begs her for helping, noting that they need to keep Danny out of the spotlight for many reasons. Though surprised by their stocked first-aid kit, Bethany gets to work and staples Danny up, getting him stable as Ward asks about Mary since learning she's bad news. Bethany tells them to keep Danny's wounds sterilized and call 911 if an infection starts, then angrily requests that Ward not call him for something like this again. He apologizes but says he was worried about Danny; she replies that he needs to be up front with her about matters like this and she doesn't like being a part of them, though it's nice to see Ward can actually care about someone. Misty asks about Mary; Ward tells them about her special ops past and says she went freelance after being medically discharged, which is why he was in the Rand database. He is surprised to hear that Davos hired her, pointing out his relationship with Danny, so Colleen explains what Davos is doing. News that he's killing people frightens Ward, knowing Joy is involved with him, and Misty points out she could have had a hand in the situation since Mary was in the Rand database. Though Ward wants to talk to her, Colleen says it'd be better if she and Misty went considering Joy's current feelings toward him and that Danny needs someone to stay with him. Over at Joy's apartment, Walker is picking up her money when Joy brings up that the former was right about Davos, and she needs help. Walker says she could protect Joy like she wants, but Davos is someone who needs to be taken care of completely, and she could do that as well. While Danny recovers and connects with Ward, Misty and Colleen head to Joy's apartment to figure out her role in the situation. So far I'm definitely liking how this season is going a lot more than the previous one, especially in terms of character development.
Last season, as everyone knows, it got pretty old how Danny was naively optimistic and just shouted about being (meme incoming) "the Immortal Iron Fist, protector of K'un-L'un..." This time around, due in part to Matt Murdock's sacrifice in The Defenders making him more dedicated than ever to protecting his city and the Hand's defeat leaving him unsure of what he should do next. Though he's injured and out of it for much of this episode, he finally opens up about some problems he's been keeping from Colleen as he recovers. We see an obvious parallel between him and Davos this episode, now that the latter has stolen the iron fist, and this is most shown at the moment Danny realizes his powers are gone. During Davos's flashback to when Priya berated him, we get a shot (shown earlier) of Davos staring at his clenched fist, as he desires the power his "brother' had gotten. Soon after this comes Danny's attempt at breaking out from Rhyno's hideout, when he hurts his hand on his chain, and stares at his own hand. More than just a statement about wanting to be the Iron Fist, I'd say this is a moment showing where each of them feels powerless in more than one way. For Davos, he had just been defeated by the person he was closest to, which stung enough, but this person was also an outsider and won what had been considered his birthright. The pain of this must've already been terrible along with the beating he'd taken, and then his mother called him a failure and essentially said she wishes he'd never been born. For Danny, he likely feels guilty about what happened to Matt, which is why he has so vehemently taken on his friend's crusade. He's been pushing himself to his limits this season, and now he's been beaten by two people he thought were friends, and had his very being stripped away. Ward actually brings this up while talking to Danny, and to have the fist taken after having earned and lived with it for so long must be completely shattering for Danny. Much like how Daredevil is now trying to find himself, Danny is also having to figure out who he is and fight if he wants to take back his abilities. We also see the more obvious contrast between Danny and Davos in this episode, with the former having a more peaceful ideology and method of using the fist. Whereas Danny always tries to keep people alive and struggles to use his power, Davos has no qualms about killing those he deems a foe and has quickly mastered the fist. The contrast also shows in their upbringing, as despite both of them growing up with the monks of K'un-L'un, Danny started out with his loving parents, while Davos felt like a disappointment. We see a lot of progression with Ward in this episode, as learning of Danny's plight immediately stops him from telling jokes, and he quickly becomes involved in trying to help. Like Bethany says, it's nice to see him actually care for a person; when he arrives with her to help Danny, he is visibly upset and wants to make sure his friend makes it. At the beginning of the series, he was the one vehemently set against Danny, sure that the young man was only after their money and company, and Joy was more of an ally. This season, as a result of Ward and Danny's deception, Joy is a main antagonist, while Ward has again reached a level of brotherly love with Danny. At the same time that Joy has clearly gone too far to get what she considers payback, it's clear that she's not totally evil, as seen at the start when she seems horrified at what's happened to Danny. Throughout this season, she has actually often felt remorse for what she's done, with Davos occasionally wondering if she's wavering from their cause. When she met with Danny and Ward, she felt some reluctance to move forward because of Danny's compassion, and though she still went through with their plan, she struggles to answer when Walker asks if she's happy with what she saw in the video. It's nice to see Misty get continued screentime after Luke Cage, as she continues to be a commanding, powerful present whenever she's onscreen. Her command of the situation when she and Colleen rescue Danny is impressive as she handles Rhyno and proves him to be no threat. On the other hand, Colleen gets somewhat tiring so far as she continues to try avoiding their dangerous life in favor of settling down with Danny. While obviously it's fair and understandable for her to want a simple life, she's dating the Iron Fist, and her own search into the combs she found earlier this season were sure to get her into trouble. We know in the end she's going to lose her reluctance, especially since there's hope that she could end up with Misty as Daughters of the Dragon. In a way this hope could be dashed since both Iron Fist and Luke Cage have been canceled, which is a pity considering I felt like season 2 of this has been a vast improvement on season 1, but I'm trying to be more hopeful about the situation. They could simply be canceled, but since there have been hints in both shows about Luke and Danny teaming up, as well as Colleen and Misty, forming a team, it could be that a show is planned for at least one of the groups. With Luke and Danny having become closer and both needing steady work, I'd definitely be interested in seeing the Heroes for Hire come together. Though Danny's still out of it for now, I can't wait to see what he does to take down Davos and reclaim his fist.
