Nadeem learns of more corruption as Matt decides how to handle his situation, Karen tries to escape, and while Foggy's speech seemed great, he learns a dark secret.
Matt finds Lantom at a bar to demand answers about Maggie; the priest admits he knew, but claims he couldn't tell him.
Enraged that Lantom hid the truth as he struggled, he asks why; Lantom says he'd hoped Maggie would tell him eventually, and Matt says she never visited him as a kid. Shaking, he points out she didn't even comforted him after his father's death, when he was left alone, and Lantom let him believe he had no one. Lantom ignores Matt's question of why, saying Maggie is a person like anyone who has made mistakes; he claims Matt needs to understand you don't see your parents as people if you grow up with them. Decades earlier, a young Maggie went to a boxing match since she and her friends soon wouldn't be going anywhere, and met Jack Murdock. She agreed to help Jack with his water and being wiped off, and they became infatuated as she watched her first fight. After Matt was born, postpartum depression hit Maggie hard, and Jack eventually let Lantom and the nuns lead Maggie back to the church. Matt says he initially felt dumb realizing she was there all along, then became angry that Lantom knew and hid the truth, despite their conversations on the subject. Calling these conversations about truth a lie, Matt shames Lantom and walks out. Over at Nadeem's, the still-bleeding agent calls Winn about what he knows, and the two go to Hattley's house for a recorded explanation. Nadeem states his belief that Fisk is conspiring to commit a crime with the unwitting FBI, and has corrupted Dex, who he believes is Daredevil. He shows his gunshot wound as his reasoning, and suggests an investigation into Fisk, taking full responsibility for the situation. Hattley places him on administrative leave and he hands over his badge and gun, but as he and Winn talk about their next move, Hattley suddenly shoots and kills Winn. The horrified Nadeem watches as Hattley cries out at him to put down the gun, then shuts off the tape. Angered that he brought this to her house, she forces him to sit. Manning then enters and puts the tape and gun in a bag, pointing out they have them, and prints as blackmail; Hattley gives Nadeem his badge bag, explaining that Fisk is his boss now.
Karen has decided to run and hide from Fisk, as while Foggy suggests doing as he has, she points out the man knows she killed his best friend.
She feels responsible for Fisk knowing Matt's secret, and though she doesn't want it, she accepts money from Foggy and leaves. At the church, Maggie is comforting a boy who's been adopted when Lantom arrives and tells her about Matt, so she rushes downstairs and breaks down upon seeing Matt's necklace and empty cot. Our Daredevil has gone to his dad's old gym, where he hallucinates his father and claims that while he knows everything now, nothing has changed. Nadeem struggles with his bullet wound in the shower and Seema tells him he has a visitor; Dex is downstairs teaching Sami how to throw a curveball. While Nadeem is anxious, Dex keeps up their familial friendship, claiming he wanted to taste Seema's cooking, so Nadeem takes him outside to talk. Dex says Nadeem's lawyer stunt was cold and betraying, but Fisk wants him alive so they can get Daredevil; he covers for Nadeem so he can change his bloody shirt, saying they'll be spending the day together. Foggy struggles to fix the sink, worrying but not wanting to run, and Marci claims he can't quit because he's giving people hope, showing an iPhone video of his speech. With half the police force retweeting it and Tower unable to respond, they are excited to realize he could win the election and beat Fisk. At FBI headquarters, Nadeem calls Matt to say something is up; it turns out Dex is watching and forcing him to keep Matt unaware.
Matt argues with his father's ghost about his parents lying to him, and accuses him of leaving just like her by not going down in his fixed fight like he was supposed to.
Jack counters that he did it for Matt, living up to his code of being a man through fighting satisfaction, and it cost him everything, Matt would do the same. Matt denies this, and when Jack says he pretends it's okay because he kills no one, Matt says he's done with that; he's going to kill Fisk when given the chance. Karen arrives at the church to talk to Maggie about Matt, shocked to learn the nun is his mother, and the revelation resulted in his departure. She explains that after Matt's birth, she was convinced she'd sinned even though she hadn't taken her vows, so she committed a bigger sin by abandoning him. When Jack was alive, she felt the truth would confuse him, after Jack's death, she thought it would hurt the boy, and now she's realized she was a coward. Maggie says God sent Matt now to give her another chance, and she failed, so Matt won't be back; she apologizes for unloading. She points out Matt will need a friend when Karen finds him, but the reporter explains she's running and merely wanted to warn him that Fisk knows his secret. Realizing Karen is in danger, Maggie offers the church as a haven, and though Karen doesn't want to put them at risk, the nun says the church has done this for centuries. She claims she can make some calls and get her halfway around the world in days, and begs to be allowed to help her and Matt, so Karen agrees. At the FBI, Hattley announces Dex's return, and Dex thanks everyone, especially Ray, whom he says he'll "pay back" one day. Foggy is celebrating his video with the family when his anxious brother arrives, telling him to take everything about Fisk back. Theo reveals their suppliers randomly stopped ordering the year before, and they needed a loan; he didn't come to Foggy because Red Lion Bank offered help. To Foggy's horror, he explains that the loan manager taught him to cook the books, which got them the loan and brought back the suppliers. This afternoon, Manning came, aware of the loan process, and if Foggy doesn't take back what he said, he'll have everything exposed, which would get Theo and their parents, who also signed, arrested. While Foggy gets this news, Nadeem comes to learn just how corrupt the bureau has become as he is forced to help Fisk, and Matt finally goes after the Kingpin.
Every time things seem to go in our protagonists' favor, Fisk plays a new hand that completely shifts things in his favor again.
Nadeem's discovery at the start of this episode is a massive show of how powerful Fisk truly is, and a good way of stopping Nadeem and Matt's team-up. What's more interesting is that we learn later there is more to blackmailing Nadeem than is already seems, and the Kingpin has been working on this situation a long time. In the past I found Nadeem comical because of his smugness as he was manipulated, but at this point I really feel bad for him. All along it was clear Nadeem does want true justice to be served, yet he's realizing he was getting conned from the start into establishing another corrupt system. It seems like this is the case for Foggy as well, with his family in a terrible position now due to Fisk getting involved. Along with getting back at Foggy for getting him imprisoned, this is also a way for Fisk to prevent any future attacks. Foggy's attempt at protecting himself by running for DA has worked, but Fisk has circumvented this by instead going after the lawyer's family. Now, he's stuck with a decision because he can't just keep after Fisk if he wants to help his family, but stopping would send the Kingpin after him again. It's sad to see Karen having to make a run for it and now hiding in the church, but at the same time, I find it interesting how she actually made a play Fisk didn't expect. It didn't work out, of course, but Fisk had no idea it was her who killed Wesley, and this information was a revelation of his own. In a way this could help derail Fisk's plan, because as calculated as he is, Fisk is rather emotional, and finding his best friend's killer is a big distraction. Matt gets a choice as well in the ending section of the episode, as Nadeem is forced to keep messaging and calling him as Fisk sets a trap. Both Fisk and Matt know it's a trap, and while there is an expected outcome, I was pleasantly surprised by what Matt decides to do. I liked how this episode explained so much about Maggie's past and explored how she and Lantom regret their choices as well as Matt's anger. Prior to the season's release, I remember reading something about this storyline's comic origin saw Matt meeting his mom, but I stopped giving much thought to it as the season progressed. Seeing what Maggie went through and hearing she feels shame for what she did does garner some understanding, but Matt has a massive point against her and Lantom. Along with how he points out they knew all along, especially while teaching him about truth, Maggie's own words in a past episode are a bit condemning. Matt brings up in this episode that he was all alone, and in the past she admitted to Karen that he shut down when she didn't go to him after a nightmare. This was a hard enough blow for him then, but now he gets to realize that she chose to focus on the other kids despite him being her own. Matt is therefore going through a lot of emotional turmoil now, feeling betrayed yet again, and this also makes it better that he makes the choice he does. This episode gives us insight into characters and the full extent of Fisk's prowess, and is able to keep things interesting without needing the usual Daredevil action. With everyone stuck in difficult positions, we're set up for some massive plays on each side of Fisk's chessboard.
