With the Dark Lord roaming the Earth again, Sabrina learns her shocking relation to the apocalypse as she and her friends fight to close the Gates of Hell.
Wardwell recounts how, after she wandered the wastes of the world, Lucifer (Luke Cook) fell from grace and found her.
As the Devil exits the Kinkle mine, Sabrina tells her aunts about Wardwell manipulating her and the prophecy, as well as Satan's return. Nick explains Satan's plan and Ambrose tells them about the mandrake, and horrifies the women by revealing Sabrina is meant to be queen. Intent that family should come first, Zelda declares they'll protect Sabrina, and with Nick's help the family sets up onions and iron nails around the house. Sabrina's friends arrive, and after assuring them she's not the copy they dealt with, she tells them about Satan's plan. Harvey, ignoring Nick's point that they're mortal, says they can help since the Gates of Hell are in the mines, so they go to find a way to keep them closed. Prudence approaches her sisters for help, and though they initially refuse, they agree after she says she's going to kill Blackwood, revealing a red ribbon for a distance plan. Satan, now in his original form, enters Dorian's, where the warlock is shocked upon realizing his master has entered the room. The Dark Lord wonders where Lilith is, and she enters, explaining she was paving the way for his return but wonders why everything he promised her is going to Sabrina. She wonders if she'll ever get what he says she will, but he warns that he gets a certain way when bored, which she is making him, and demands she bring Sabrina. He decides to deal with "wayward" members of his flock, and we see the Weird Sisters are chanting a spell to kill Blackwood. Melvin enters his office with news of Satan's return and a request to see him at Dorian's, so the priest, believing his blood to be a sign, has Prudence go with him.
The Spellmans determine Satan kept things hidden to have servants, and Zelda is appalled to learn Sabrina suspects her dad aided the Dark Lord's plans.
Zelda is certain this isn't so, and Ambrose says they could protect Sabrina with a spell that will carve a sigil into her soul and keep her hidden as long as she's moving. Wardwell enters, saying it wouldn't work, and Sabrina snarls to the others how she's the Dark Lord's servant, which angers her aunts. The family defends Sabrina, believing they have they upper hand, but stop when they learn she's actually Lilith, with Sabirna upset to learn she killed her favorite teacher. Wardwell says Sabrina now has to go to Satan, otherwise he'll kill everyone in his way, and she surprisingly agrees, wanting answers. Ambrose wants to go as protection, but Wardwell only allows her to bring Salem. Back at Dorian's, Blackwood pledges himself to Satan, who learns of the church's changes and asks about Sabrina, mocking Blackwood for calling her dangerous. He also mocks the church's new name, saying Blackwood is no Judas, and orders that Blackwood and the others will now also serve Sabrina. Blackwood laughs at this, but Lucifer intimidates him, saying he and the others will serve her at her coronation and every night henceforth. Roz wonders how they're supposed to stop the gates, and Harvey reveals he truly intends to dynamite the mine. Armed with his dad's guns, the Cunning, and surprisingly his sketchbook, the group heads out. Sabrina admits to Wardwell she wondered why Lilith served the Dark Lord, so the woman explains he promised her a throne and power. This doesn't appease Sabrina, so Wardwell continues that he was kind initially, and Greendale was founded on the place he landed, which is why it's cursed. Over time, his monstrous form developed. She continued to serve him because he's all she knew, which Sabrina calls a terrible reason before Dorian enters, saying the Dark Lord is ready for her.
As she sits with Lucifer, he requests her respect and love, but first her gratitude, claiming he gave everything she ever wanted.
She snarls that she didn't want the power and other things he gave, but he believes this is a lie, saying she reveled in what he granted her. She suggests he take Lilith as queen, but he scoffs that she's got her place, while Sabrina's is to blow Gabriel's horn to start the apocalypse, and after they dance the Mephisto Waltz at her coronation, the world will be remade for them to rule forever. She turns him down, but he laughs that she's been defiant since her 16th birthday, yet everything as gone as he planned, revealing Nick helped. She is horrified to see Nick enter, and he explains the cliche that the Dark Lord had him get close to her, but he really did fall in love. Sabrina spits in his face and says he hurt her even if he didn't know this would happen, but the Dark Lord shrugs that he had no choice, as choice doesn't exist. She asks about her dad, and Lucifer reveals Edward wasn't her father; he is. She is confused, but remembers her dream of Edward presenting one of the twins from her birth, who had hooves, to the Dark Lord. He says there is no choice but for her to blow the horn, so she runs out, with an angered Salem hissing at Nick when he tries to follow. In the mines, Roz uses the Cunning at the mural of Sabrina to find the gates, while Blackwood tells his congregation an embellished version of his Satanic meeting. Everyone praises Satan, believing the Dark Lord blessed the church, and Blackwood pulls a Jim Jones by having everyone drink a communal Kool-Aid. Sabrina returns home, surprising her family with what she learned, and though Zelda says it can't be and that Edward loved Diana, Hilda says it could be true. She explains Edward and Diana struggled to have a baby and went to Lucifer for a blessing, and after having Sabrina, Diana worried that she wasn't Edward's. Zelda is shocked and confused, but Ambrose says the Dark Lord would do this because by mixing mortal, witch, and infernal blood, he perverts the holy trinity. Sabrina is furious to realize the Dark Lord tricked and used her parents, and declares she'll fight him until her dying breath. Though she isn't sure how, Wardwell enters. In the mines, the others find the torch-lit gates and realize dynamite won't work, so Roz uses the Cunning and sees numerous runes, which she believes to be protective. Unable to describe them, Roz finds she can instead show the vision to Harvey, who draws the glyphs, which Theo then places in front of the gates. Though everyone is finding little ways to fight back, the Dark Lord seems too powerful as he shatters plan after plan.
Well, there's certainly not many shows that end a season with the threat of Hell opening and the apocalypse starting, though the Winchester boys have faced this.
Lucifer was a highly entertaining character to finally get to see more this episode, with Cook playing him to charming perfection. With confident looks and a cocked brow, it's easy to see why the Dark Lord is so convincing, with his handsome face a far cry from the goat head we've seen before. The man simply oozes confidence and power, striding into Dorian's in only a loin cloth, commanding everyone who comes near, and threatening any who question him with very little change in his demeanor or words. One of the more impressive, yet simple, displays of his authority, is when Blackwood laughs at the idea of serving Sabrina, and he simply stands to tower over the priest. His wardrobe shows his intense vanity, with the first clothes he wears being a silky red robe, followed later by one of gold. When speaking with Sabrina, he makes it abundantly clear he was leading her to his goal the entire time, laughing when she tries to say no and only slightly moving his eyes while revealing Nick was helping him the whole time. And speaking of Nick, holy crap we finally get a conclusion to Hilda's suspicions and Wardwell telling Sabrina she should trust Nick. He claims he didn't know what was going to happen, and later reminds Sabrina you can't just say no to the Dark Lord's demands. This is one of the few moments his argument is really believable, because although Sabrina unfairly claims he could've fought, we all know even she couldn't. You can feel the sadness as Nick admits to helping the Dark Lord, and Sabrina's tears drip as she tries to stay strong and defy him despite the pain. At one point, Nick says he approached Sabrina before the Dark Lord made his demand, which makes me wonder when he got the order. Perhaps it was at the same time the Dark Lord gave Sabrina hers. In this same regard, Sabrina is harsh on Lilith for following Lucifer, just like when she was practicing for the play, failing to see things from the woman's point of view. Now, Lilith's pain doesn't excuse what she did to Sabrina, especially sending Adam to try to kill her, but she was still a victim of an abusive relationship. Sabrina is harsh on her for not leaving after the Dark Lord's fall, but he had by that point already gotten into her head, and she believed she had nowhere else to go. This is a common situation in abusive relationships, as victims often don't have the ability to leave, and doing so can be incredibly difficult. I liked how Sabrina's friends and family rallied together in this episode, with Zelda immediately willing to turn on the Dark Lord after learning of his plan and the others willing to go into the mines and find the GATES OF HELL. That's devotion. I'm now thinking that Nick's constant rudeness about Sabrina's friends being mortal, especially his hostility toward Harvey, could be because of his orders. When Harvey and the others offer to help, Nick reminds Sabrina that they're mortal, but wasn't her being half-mortal one of the things that interested him? The others definitely show it doesn't matter that they're mortal, with Harvey pulling out his dad's guns and planning to just blast dynamite to keep the gates closed. Something I found funny as they went off to do so was Theo's face: if you watch as they leave the Kinkle house, he has a huge grin. Ever since seeing Dorothea's ghost for the first time, Theo has become a strong, confident character, and I found it cool and entertaining that the mission excited him. Roz gets a lot of shining moments as they go into the mines, using her powers to both find the gates and both see and show the glyphs to keep it closed. Despite their first plan failing, these three are able to come up with a good plan B, which can't exactly be said for Sabrina and the others. As was the case early in the first season, Sabrina constantly seems to underestimate the Dark Lord, and the plans she and Lilith come up with are bound to have problems. Despite this, they still have multiple valiant efforts against Lucifer that are commendable, and it's clear from the first plan that they won't give up. With season 2 finally done, the time has come again to simply wait for Sabrina to make her return, this time with a new status quo.
