As Soren and Claudia search for the princes, Rayla and the boys make a stop at a town to seek help for the ailing dragon egg.
Callum urges Ezran to rest, but the boy claims he's fine and looks at his book; fear of losing Ezran got him drawing a gorgeous picture of their mom. Believing she's watching over them, he says she'd be proud but would want Ezran closer to the fire.
Rayla enters and says their mother was beautiful, then gives the boys a bag of moonberries and hands Ezran some "bogeyberries" for his cold. He says he won't eat them, and she reveals they go up his nose. She asks about the egg and Callum says it's dim and flickery; she notes it's darker than before she left and Ezran says they need help. At the Bantha Lodge, Soren and Claudia arrive with a pack of dogs. Soren pulls out Callum's filthy training shirt and mocks the boy's skills; though Claudia isn't amused. The dogs easily find the scent and they set off, but the hounds quickly lose the trail upon reaching the river, so Claudia simply applauds their work. Back in the mountains, the kids and Rayla find a town. Callum points out they'll find elf-hating humans with any dragon experts, so Rayla dons Ezran's cloak as a disguise. Callum is unimpressed, so Rayla busts out a silly "human accent." He notes her 4-fingered hands, so she swipes some gloves from a nearby snowman.
The group heads into town with the totally nonchalant "Human Rayla," and come upon a man in town square claiming he can beat anyone with just his dagger.
One contender is pulled away and the man looks to Rayla, but a large man with an enormous sword steps in and people place their bets. Rayla, noticing the man's dagger is glowing yellow and covered with runes, has Callum wait and watch; the crowd is amazed when the man's burning dagger cuts through the massive blade, and the larger man runs off in embarrassment. Rayla explains the dagger is a Sunforge blade. Made by Sunfire elves, they retain their forging temperature for centuries; the man's rune-inscribed sheathe protects him. Callum asks about the blade's cutting power and Rayla, saying it can cut through anything, realizes he wants her to try it out on her binding. She leaves to "ask nicely" for it while Callum and Ezran look for help with the egg. Meanwhile, Soren grows frustrated while planning to track the boys. Claudia knows a tracking spell, but would need something like toenails or spit from the boys. Soren snaps they don't have time to look for such things, but notices Rayla's braid pinned to a tree by an arrow from their escape episodes before.
While Callum and Ezran find a veterinarian dealing with some spooked horses, Rayla tails the man from before, giving chase when he realizes he's being followed.
She eventually corners him in an alley, and leaves him puzzled when she reveals she doesn't want his money, but rather his help. Back in town, Callum and Ezran tell the doctor their story, claiming it's about their friend "Jofus;" the man buys it until Callum mentions glowing, and requests the truth. He promises to tell no one, and is shocked when Ezran unveils the egg. in the alley, Rayla begs the man for help, and though suspicious and noting his blade will burn her, he tries to cut the binding, in the process setting her glove ablaze. Though the binding is undamaged, Rayla shakes off the glove. He realizes she's a Moonshadow elf so she disarms him, and again fails to cut the binding; he is surprised again when she says she's not going to hurt or rob him, dropping the dagger. Meanwhile, Claudia finds a crevice in a rock face that holds the last thing she needs for the tracking spell, dragging the bulky Soren along with her. The doctor in town, amazed to see a dragon egg, finds a heartbeat but determines the baby is dying inside and he can't help it. Disappointed, the boys start leaving, but he tells them there's a possible dangerous solution at the Cursed Caldera, the place one of his horses had a terrifying encounter. He introduces them to a girl named Ellis, who reveals her wolf Ava would be dead if not for the miracle from the Cursed Caldera. While Soren and Claudia take steps for their tracking spell, Callum, Ezran, and Rayla end the episode having made a decision about the Cursed Caldera.
Here we get good examples of how powerful the magic in this world is, and how there are varied viewpoints to its abilities.
One thing I've noticed is how the two groups we're following have opposing thoughts on magic: Rayla is teaching about its intrinsic beauty while Claudia uses darkness. While these two are accustomed to magic already, Callum is growing excited about learning magic, while Soren only sees the disgusting nature of the dark side. Each group's magic use is in the same vein; while Callum is using what he knows to protect everyone and he sees the craftsmanship of Sunforge elves, Claudia is tracking and attacking the group using nasty tactics. The Sunforge dagger is a perfect example of how powerful the magic in this world is, as according to Rayla it'll be as hot as it is for centuries, yet at the same time its power can be contained with the runes on the man's sheathe. If a mere dagger has the cutting capabilities to effortlessly slice through a massive iron blade, one has to wonder what else the Sunforge elves can do. The owner of the blade caught my attention despite seeing him little here, as with his special weapon and an appearance that stands out, I feel he'll be important. The show's characterization continues to impress, as I had assumed the man would either join the group or at least fight when Rayla cornered him. Instead, he surrenders rather quickly despite his talk before, and upon learning Rayla is a Moonshadow elf, he becomes hostile. I get the feeling he'll be more important later, as I also think about the man who assaulted Rayla in the forest, but for now I'm glad I was wrong. The humor was a lot of fun in this episode, though as always there were some moments of joke styles I'm tired of, like Callum's poor attempt at lying to the vet. When Rayla dons her "human" disguise, she declares her find a "snow-elf," and Ezran corrects that it's probably a snowman. Later, once she has her disguise "perfected," she takes a moment as the boys leave to take the nose and turn it into two horns, again declaring it a "snow-elf." It's a rather simple joke, but some lightheartedness among heavier moments is helpful, and the idea of "snow-elves" definitely wasn't something I'd ever considered. After learning about the Cursed Caldera, I'm more curious about what's going to happen, especially because Rayla's binding could potentially be aided by a miracle.
