Sandy teaches Spongebob about Christmas, and the excited sponge decides to get the rest of Bikini Bottom into the holiday spirit.
Patchy the Pirate and Potty are preparing for Christmas, and Patchy brings up that there's nothing like a Bikini Bottom Christmas, showing what Spongebob and Patrick are up to.
Potty irritates Patchy by swooping in to steal cookie dough, which the pirate says is for the kids, and suddenly a bell is rung. Patchy reveals that this means it's time for fan mail, and pulls out a letter from a 10-year-old who wonders if Spongebob also celebrates Christmas. To Potty's surprise, Patchy says they didn't used to know about Christmas in Bikini Bottom, and as the pirate segues into the episode, he finds, to his frustration, that Potty has eaten all the cookie dough.
At some point in Bikini Bottom, Spongebob tries to sneak up to get Sandy with a karate move, arriving just in time to see her plug in her tree's Christmas lights.
Thinking there's a fire, Spongebob enters and throws a bucket on her, and he is confused when she says it's a Christmas tree, having never heard of the holiday. Shocked, Sandy tells Spongebob all about Christmas with Santa Claus catching his attention the most. He then spreads the holiday to Patrick, Mr. Krabs, and Squidward, and though Squidward is a Scrooge, Patrick is ecstatic and Mr. Krabs relishes the idea of getting free stuff. Squidward finds it creepy that some "jolly prowler" just breaks into people's homes, but the others are still excited, with Patrick comparing Santa to a genie. Spongebob gives Patrick and Squidward paper and pencils to write letters to Santa, with Patrick repeatedly tearing his from the strange way he tries to write. As an example, Spongebob writes an eloquent letter asking that Santa simply visit Bikini Bottom, and takes it to a special machine to shoot it to the surface. It works, so Mr. Krabs hands his over, having asked for a pony with saddle bags full of money, while Patrick asked for yet another piece of paper. Other residents come with their own letters, and Spongebob doesn't understand when his stories a bunch of "inane dribble," so he simply tells everyone to prepare.
Spongebob and the others then get into one of the most popular aspects of the special: singing about how excited for Christmas they are while Squidward tries his hardest to avoid the joy.
As everyone declares it feels like the first Christmas to them, even Mr. Krabs and Plankton make amends for the holiday. Spongebob and Patrick decorate Squidward's house, annoying him, and they finish up the song by topping their Christmas tree (Squidward's coral tree) with Patrick. Patchy wonders if Squidward's actually right and there can't be a Christmas under the sea, and as things return to Bikini Bottom, Spongebob finishes sending the letters. He suddenly realizes Squidward never gave him a letter, so he rushes over to write it for him, becoming confused when the latter doesn't want to. Squidward angrily declares that he doesn't believe in Santa, and even after the other residents join Spongebob in trying to convince him, he doesn't give in. To his annoyance, the people begin singing joyfully about how Santa is coming, but Christmas isn't going to go exactly as planned.
Spongebob's "Christmas Who" is definitely one of my favorite classic specials to watch, and I make sure to watch it every year.
It makes sense that the undersea creatures wouldn't know about Christmas, and knowing Sandy means they were bound to learn about it eventually. We see in another episode that it's perfectly possible for Bikini Bottom to get snow, if an iceberg happens to float along, so they can easily get visually into the season. Naturally excitable about everything, Spongebob is more than happy to spread the joys of Christmas, and of course the often rationally thinking and typically pessimistic Squidward would be the one to rain on his parade. This presents a perfect example of the dichotomy between the two, as Spongebob is an ecstatic promoter while Squidward is a major Scrooge. Especially since this was at an earlier point for the series, Spongebob's energy wasn't extremely annoying, so you can feel the happy Christmas energy radiate from him. He also shows a rather selfless attitude in this episode, making his one desire from Santa be that Christmas come to the people of Bikini Bottom. On the other hand you have Mr. Krabs, who sees this as an opportunity to get money and comically asks for a pony with saddlebags full of money. Patrick shows his typical stupidity in the same manner, not even understanding how to properly write a letter. The song in this episode is an instant classic among Spongebob's playlist, showcasing both the whole town's immense joy at celebrating the holiday for the first time as well as comical interactions between Spongebob and Squidward. The live-action sections with Patchy and Potty are great as well, with them getting into the spirit while feuding like always. We see an entertaining use of Potty's puppetry in these moments, with him at one point being so fat his body falls, Patchy cutting his strings, and the pirate also at one point yanking on them, which causes his puppeteer to take a fall. Tom Kenny is always entertaining as Patchy, and he does and he does an excellent job telling the story of Spongebob's first Christmas and getting into the season. The episode is full of beautiful colors, decorations, plenty of snow like the characters say, and the perfect spirit to celebrate Christmas.
