"Dead by Daylight" is all set up for the Halloween season with the Hallowed Blight event, so get ready for all those putrid plants! This event works similarly to the Summer BBQ event, where survivors worked on special generators and killers had special hooks. Survivors who succeeded in finishing a certain number of the generators got a special outfit for Kate, and killer who succeeded in hooking got the Pro-pain Hillbilly hammer. For this event, the killer again has special Cankerous Hooks, but survivors now have the addition of Visceral Cankers to deal with. The goal of this event is to harvest Putrid Nectar from the "Pustulus Plants," filling up vials to create Putrid Serum. The Serum can then be traded for cosmetics for characters, with players able to unlock 6 new cosmetic pieces for 2 total outfits. According to the DBD Wikipedia, the event originally allowed players to get only 1 total outfit, but outrage from fans caused them to make the change. As part of the event, more game lore about Benedict Baker and Vigo, two unseen characters, was added to Baker's journal. Within, Baker details finding Vigo's own journal in a laboratory with syringes, protective clothes, and chemicals. According to Vigo's journal, the Entity undergoes a purge each year involving the Blight, and the Pustulus grow. Videos on the website show Baker's discovery of and experimenting with the Blight, beginning with a plant's growth. While he was working, however, the Trapper arrived and destroyed the lab, injuring Baker as the man ran off. With the journal promising escape and fearing an imminent death, Baker chose to return and experiment further. There, he concocted a serum from the nectar and injected it into a dead rodent, which immediately came to life and bit into his wound before scampering away. Baker later woke feeling nauseous with his arm reacting to the serum, and a booming noise coming from the cellar. The Trapper returned, and Baker got a better understanding of Vigo's notes when he was able to overpower and incapacitate the killer. Amazed at his abilities, Baker then chained the Trapper up in the cellar to experiment on him with the serum, until the second video's events. Along with the Trapper's escape, Baker found in the journal that the Blight situation was at its peak, and the nectar would soon be gone. Essentially having become addicted to the serum at this point, Baker began pushing harder and harder to get it. Desperate fix his wound, he decided he would do anything to get the nectar, foregoing sleep to harvest it. With the plants decaying, Baker struggled to get what he could as the Blight went away, injecting what he concocted into his arm. Baker became distraught after running out of serum and being suck in the Mist, searching and shouting for Vigo. As he felt death approaching, Baker realized something was wrong with his mind until finally, the Entity got him. Now it has long been theorized that Benedict Baker, who has never before actually been seen, will eventually be introduced as a killer. While the Entity selected each current killer while they were already working as such, there is also an idea that survivors can eventually become killers. On the Entity page, it mentions that their souls are lost piece by piece as they are sacrificed and their hope and other positive emotions are devoured by the Entity, eventually leaving them cold, emotionless shells. Meanwhile on the killer page, one of Baker's journal entries mentions his wonder about if the killers have any hope left, which has led to the idea that once a killer has lost all hope, they can become a killer. This idea, coupled with Baker's mention of something being wrong as he loses hope, followed by saying the Entity has arrived, suggest that he became something dark. Perhaps in the future we'll be seeing Baker in-game as a doctor-based killer using chemicals like Blight to his advantage. Speaking of the killers, numerous game-made killers got cosmetics for the event, having been infected with the Blight. They are the costumes which can potentially be purchased during the event, featuring monstrous mutations on each killer, with vials of Blight shoved into them and the putrid mixture oozing from their bodies. For me, the coolest new looks are for the Wraith and Doctor, both of him tend to be low on people's killer list. While obviously the designs don't update their abilities, they do get a more terrifying look befitting of a horror game. Along with this on the other side of things, Dwight and Claudette also get some new cosmetics, giving an old-fashioned look. For Dwight, we get a classy vest/pocket watch look, which makes him look like he would fit in with old society. With Claudette, we get an outfit fitting for the event and that capitalizes on her background as a botany student. The event thus-far has been lackluster to some, since the flowers are essentially given the same treatment and animation as generators, and the hooks are a simple change.
Many were expecting something that had pumpkins and other Halloween-themed objects scattered around maps, but I'm overall happy with how things are. Considering how much effort went into designing and programming the new costumes, as well as implementing the new flower to the game, I'm not surprised little was done to the look of the map. It's believed that the even is also being used as something helpful for the devs, as implementing the flowers gives the survivors a new objective each round. A longtime complaint from players is that, contrary to the game's intention, good survivors are much stronger than good killers. With many items and perks considered crutches for survivors, along with the ability to run killers around loop areas, better survivors have made the game survivor-favorable. One suggestion people have had before is to add a new objective for survivors, as matches are essentially time-controlled by survivors. The biggest combination pointed to is good looping skills combined with the perk Decisive Strike, as after successfully running the killer around for a long time, a survivor who finally gets caught can just escape the killer's grasp and run again. Depending on how fast the survivors can get generators done, they can easily get to the point of unlocking the door, and even if not all the generators done, at least one survivor can potentially escape with the hatch. By adding in more objectives, it forces the survivors to stay in the match for longer and gives the killer more time to hook survivors. If this is indeed the true purpose of the glowers, I for one like the fact that devs seem to be at least trying to listen to and fix issues, and would like to see what they implement next.
