Following their disastrous air training, the D-pilots are tasked with escaping an island together in a week, but there seems to be a problem with the OTFs.
The mood before lights out is terrible, partially because of Hisone's words to Elle, though the former believes the latter should get blame as well.
Sosoda, meanwhile, learns from someone at Elle's base that while her predecessor got the OTF in "Hotel" mode, it has been in "Foxtrot" since Elle became its pilot. Though Sosoda and Remi have no plans and the situation could cause problems, Sosoda mentions that Vice-Minister Iiboshi had an idea. When Sosoda and Iiboshi previously met, the latter said OTFs make a trade with their pilots, receiving mental freedom in exchange for letting the pilot inside them. The right girls, he says, are blank slates and the aptitude test finds girls who feel lost. They learn who they are by being around the OTFs, allowing them to unify. Sosoda wonders what to do about Elle, who hasn't opened her heart to her OTF, but Iiboshi reminds him the OTF is the one who chooses the pilot. After an air combat session, the male pilots tease Zaito and urge him to keep going after Elle, who is again outpacing the other women while running laps. They are given free time, and while Nao surprisingly wonders about the others' wellbeing, Mayumi discusses her anger with Futomomo, and Ririko sleeps. Nao visits Elle's OTF, again in Foxtrot mode, to ask if she can fly it since its pilot isn't showing up, only to claim she was kidding when it doesn't respond. In the showers, Elle vents that everyone is looking down on her as Hisone, unaware she's blabbing in response, says they just want to get along. As she wonders why Elle doesn't approve of her OTF, the latter blurts out that it's the opposite. Hisone says it was a self-destructive move, then realizes Elle is there, and apologizes as the other pilot storms out. Elle hurriedly dresses, standing in the way of Hisone's clothes, then leaves. Hisone begins blaming herself again, then notices Elle left her bra behind. Zaito approaches Elle outside and hits on her while suggesting she not beat herself up about difficult training, but struggles as he notices her lack of a bra. She gives him a slap when she notices, leaving him frustrated as the other men arrive.
Remi explains to the women their next training will be on an island nearby where they have limited resources and be forced to work together.
Though Elle finds the idea ridiculous, Remi dryly tells them to take the mission seriously, as failure could result in them being relieved of OTF duty. Hisone is disheartened after, saying she'd just be a social outcast who talks to herself if she fails. Masotan cheers her up with a lick, so she replies in kind, to Haruto's surprise. Nao chimes in that she's like Elle, never considering OTFs had feelings and identities, but Hisone was able to figure it out quickly, which is likely why Masotan chose her. Haruto reminds her Masotan accepted her once and urges Hisone to not worry too much about the other pilots and trust the OTFs. Overjoyed at their kindness, Hisone leaps on Nao to share the love, much to the latter's irritation as Haruto laughs.
The day of the training, the women are flown to an island while their OTFs are hauled there, and told everyone has to survive and escape.
Though Remi says they can use their OTFs, she says they'll first have to figure out how, and they have a week to escape, or else they'll be retrieved. They are shocked to learn they only have enough food and water for three days, and after urging them to use their surroundings, Remi says the training is complete once they're all back at the base. Elle immediately decides to use her OTF to fly back, but everyone is surprised to find the dragons aren't responding to them. Above in a plane, Iiboshi confirms this is all training for a certain coming event, where the "white lotuses," the pilots, will need teamwork and one other thing: their emotions will be grown while they're with their OTFs. While theorizing about the OTFs' lack of flight, Hisone mentions their supplies, just as Futomomo eats all their food and water. He goes for Hisone's bag ext but she yanks it away, causing the head from Nao's dummy to fly off, startling Mayumi. Hisone talks to her Wilson-style companion as though it were the real Nao, having it suggest they search the area. Meanwhile, Mayumi is using two sticks as dowsing rods to search for water and rare metals, feeling guilty about Futomomo. Hisone's attempts to cheer her up only worsen her mood, she Hisone leaves. Feeling like it's hopeless to try escaping, Ririko has decided to sleep and wait for the rescue, shrugging off their lack of supplies by revealing she did a rain dance. Hisone finds Elle building a raft, and is surprised she has decided to escape without the enormous OTFs. Elle says they're not required to anyway and can't fly out. Determined to escape with the OTFs, Hisone tries and fails to build a fire, becoming frustrated that the others don't want to try working together. "Nao" reminds her she isn't doing much either, and after trying a rain dance, Hisone decides to search for water. She is disheartened when the others ignore her again. Though everything seems hopeless, some surprise discoveries and teamwork help the group out as they fight to survive.
Whereas most of this series so far has started happy, faced a problem, and fixed it, now we're at a point where there's more of an arcing issue.
There's a compelling situation as Elle is so drastically different from the others; while they're different from each other, they can get along and understand the OTFs. Elle, however, sees them as just tools, and unlike the others, who love their jobs, Elle hates her position and how she's seen as a "zookeeper." This episode reveals she thinks the others are looking down on her, which reminded me of My Hero Academia's Bakugou, as she's obviously excellent at her job. I'm more with Hisone, wondering why she possibly wouldn't want to pilot a dragon, but for now her anger is what's causing her problems. It's good for Elle that Nao is at the base as well, however, as she understands how she feels when it comes to considering the OTFs' feelings. I liked seeing Nao encourage Hisone in this episode, as she's expressing character growth and getting over her own unfair hatred for the other pilot. Considering she was a straight-up bully and now seems to accept Hisone, there's hope that Elle, who is just frustrated with her teammates, could as well. It'll also be good for Elle to have someone around who can better understand where she's coming from, and maybe help her improve. The future event that Iiboshi keeps talking about is curious, as he's clearly preparing the pilots for something, but they have no idea what that is. He keeps referring to the women as "white lotuses" and mentions that they are currently struggling to find themselves, which you can see in lacks of self-worth. Hisone seemed to simply choose the pilot life because it was there, and constantly struggles to deal with her social problems and worries how she's be without Masotan. Then there's Ririko, who is quiet and even mentioned she and her dragon dislike being looked at, and Mayumi has difficulty speaking up. and dealing with feelings. The trip to the island is a perfect way of both molding the girls the way Iiboshi wants to and have the characters express themselves. We're able to see their personalities affect how they handle the situation, with Ririko giving up easily, Mayumi getting emotional about Futomomo's actions, Elle retreating into her own plans, and Hisone struggling to bring them together. These are their initial reactions, however, and as they calm down and adjust to their situation, they'll be able to better react and improve themselves. The challenge is on, and the D-pilots will have to work together if they hope to get off the island and complete the challenge.
