The gang struggles to escape the church as Dex hunts them down, and Foggy and Nadeem find themselves struggling to do the right thing.
Maggie is walking through the city when she comes across the crowd fleeing Dex, whom she notices limping away as police roll in.
Removing his helmet in an alley, Dex takes out his anger on two nearby workers, then returns to Nadeem, who demands to know what's going on. Instead of answering, he tells the agent to lock down the situation for the FBI as Daredevil is a fugitive, saying their job isn't over yet. Back at the church, Karen manages to wake Matt, who immediately warns her about Poindexter and Nadeem. Maggie learns of Lantom's death as Nadeem and Dex take control of the situation, and tells them where she saw Daredevil. She is immediately suspicious when Dex says he saw Daredevil return to the church, and Nadeem gives a list of multiple suspects, including Karen. The reporter has since escaped to the church's basement, where Matt locks them in and chastises Karen for not escaping. Karen claims responsibility for Lantom's death and says she wanted to warn Matt about Fisk; he tells her the Kingpin already knew and he just gave up a shot at him. As she questions what he was gonna do, Matt hears Dex and Nadeem upstairs; Dex is calling the shots when Nadeem demands to know what'll happen to Matt. Realizing they plan to kill him, he says he didn't sign up for this, but Dex claims he did, and the two direct everyone on where to search as Nadeem notices Lantom. Maggie sees Lantom's corpse and begins praying, then when Dex and Nadeem ask for her help, she stalls them at the basement by fumbling her keys. Inside, she notices blood on a coffin and steps in Dex's way when he gets close, directing them to a roof escape.
Matt and Karen then climb out of the cramped coffin, Matt asks why Fisk wants her, and when she tells him about her failed plan, she is surprised when he calls her brave.
She admits to killing Wesley and says her recklessness got Lantom killed, and that she didn't tell him because it was nice to be treated as innocent. When he says killing Fisk has to be done, she claims she's just sad for him, and tells him what happened to her brother, saying nothing she does can atone for it. Matt claims killing Fisk could be his atonement and he can't let the man go, but she counters that killing anyone will change everything for him. Back at the hotel, Fisk walks out with an FBI entourage to a booing crowd, where Donovan explains the second circuit court of appeals has exonerated Fisk. Donovan has the "free man" take the podium, and Fisk says that while it's hard for everyone to accept, the media has tricked them with false allegations in an attempt to stop him from tearing down a corrupt system. The crowd calms as he proclaims that Daredevil is the true public enemy, having been sent to frame him and has since attacked newspapers and churches. At the church, Brett Mahoney talks to Nadeem about how Daredevil apparently tried to kill Karen, yet the FBI calls her an accomplice; he laeves when Nadeem simply says there's more to the story and it's their crime scene. Dex begins to break down due to his failure, and becomes annoyed when Agent Alinori suggests they call Kingpin about his failure. Nadeem breaks up their argument and says they have to give up for now, but relents when Dex says he'd have to be the one to tell Fisk. Nadeem talks to Maggie but she gives nothing and turns it around that if he's moral as he claims to be, he shouldn't want to help the evil that killed Lantom find Karen.
While bandaging Karen, Matt notices Maggie coming; she tells them they can stay and have food and clothes since they can't leave yet.
She assures Karen the situation isn't her fault, and after Matt ignores her, he says they won't be safe there, as the FBI has brought in search dogs. Upstairs, Dex plays it off when a search dog come toward him, and Maggie misdirects them by having a nun claim she saw the "man in black" next door at the orphanage. Karen brings up how Matt is pushing her away and tells him she knows of their relationship, and starts asking if abandonment issues are way he pushes them away. They argue for a bit and Karen finally states that she and Foggy will never just leave him, which makes him realize Foggy could help. Over at his family's shop, Foggy is disgusted when his brother hands him a statement to read from "Mr. Fisk" that claim his statements before were under duress. He claims he can't do it and Theo says this is all only happening because Foggy went after the city's biggest mob boss, who he believes has already won. While he gets a call from Matt, Hattley tells Fisk he has been determined a continuing asset that will be protected. He is pleased to learn Vanessa is coming on a plane, and decides to make a "compelling offer" to the woman who has his painting. Matt goes tot he church's roof as Foggy arrives, passing the line by telling a supportive officer that he's there to see Mahoney. Foggy keeps Nadeem busy for a few minutes while Karen comes out, then claiming she, as his client, is surrendering to the NYPD. Dex is angere,d but Mahoney points out the charge against her is state law, and Nadeem pulls him aside to say he has to get Karen away from the FBI, as she'll be dead in minutes if his men take her instead of Mahoney's. Mahoney complies and takes Karen away, and though Nadeem says Dex can't kill her yet anyway, Matt hears Nadeem snarl that he's just made a huge mistake. While Fisk makes a bid for his painting and learns of Fisk's deceit, Karen and Foggy plan with Matt and Nadeem rushes to save his family.
This episode was a crossroads in terms of morality for characters as they struggle to make choices based on what they've already done.
Nadeem is the biggest part of this and I was glad to see the steps he took despite being in such a compromising position. Like Matt says in this episode, Fisk always seems five steps ahead of everyone, but that doesn't men he has reason to believe Nadeem would go against him. He probably has contingencies, but if he was certain that the agent would stay blackmailed, it would cause problems for him if not, like Karen now being free. Nadeem had quite a decision to make in this episode, as even with Fisk not nearby, he's having to decide while next to Dex if he'll go along with things or not. Matt's idea to bring in Foggy was the perfect way to give Nadeem the opportunity to hand Karen over to the NYPD and leave, even though Dex was right there. Foggy has also reached a difficult point, as while it's unfair to say, Theo has a bit of a point in saying their family was targeted because of Foggy. Ironically, he's now being told under duress that he was under duress when he spoke about Fisk, in a classic Kingpin flip of justice to get what he wants. Foggy's position is a classic superhero trope in that now he can either sit by as Fisk continues his takeover, or keep fighting. It's been said that sitting by is just as bad as siding with a villain, so now both Foggy and Nadeem have to decide if they want to do so and be safe, or risk danger and fight. An unfortunate thing for Fisk is how, in spite of all his planning, holes can appear, like here when Nadeem says they're looking for Karen as a suspect. With people saying that "Daredevil" was trying to kill Karen, and Foggy's claim that Fisk was tricking the FBI, people are becoming suspicious. Mahoney makes note of this when he arrives, and his being there is a perfect way toget Karen to safety and prove to him that the FBI has been corrupted. Interactions between Matt and his friends were great this episode, as Matt finally starts to realize he's made a mistake pushing them away. Without the help of Maggie and the nuns, the dogs could've found him and Karen, without Foggy he couldn't have gotten Karen out, and without Karen they couldn't have shown Mahoney that there's something going on with the FBI. I found it interesting that Matt wasn't really mad anymore as Karen explained the situation fully; like her I assumed he'd get upset, but he just called her brave. While he and Maggie struggle to reach a point they can get past their feelings toward each other, more built is weighing Karen down than ever. Already feeling pangs of guilt again about her brother, now Karen feels responsible for Lantom's death, since talking to Fisk led to the attack. Dex has another one of his breakdowns in this episode that is a result of both the failing search and something Dex hears. At one moment, Dex goes into a tailspin after overhearing two people say they're disgusted that someone could kill a priest. This leads to one of his episodes, and he climbs into a truck to scream it off like Fisk suggested he start doing. Ever since he saved Fisk, Dex has talked about how he should be seen as a hero for his actions, and he's obviously desperate to be seen this way. Therefore, it's quite shocking for him to hear people disgusted with his actions as Daredevil, and it makes him angry as they continue seeing him as a villain. In another break from the typical action we see, Daredevil forces its characters to question who they are and what their morals say to do.
