As Viren makes progress with the mirror, Callum deals with the news of Harrow's death and the possibility of Claudia and Soren tricking him.
Viren's magic mirror is still serving as some kind of doorway, so he prepares the room, then sits to observe it.
At the Moon Nexus, Rayla tries to apologize and explain her inability to tell Callum about Harrow, but the boy is more concerned with how he'll tell Ezran. He finds his brother sleeping, and can't bring himself to wake him. Soren is surprised when Claudia returns crying, and when she says it's not because of Callum, he clumsily says her he's her brother and will protect her. He reminds her they need to bring the princes back and hopes her being upset won't cause problems, but she firmly claims it won't get in the way. The next morning, Ezran tells Callum about another dream involving the jelly hippo, and his brother decides to take him for a walk. He expresses pride in Ezran and says we sometimes have to face things we're not ready for; Ezran thinks he means how he has to teach Zym to fly, and potentially other things he should be learning from a King of the Dragons. Callum assures him he has the others to help, and Ezran reveals he's trying to model his teaching method after Harrow, whom he misses. Callum tears up, but claims it's just because he also misses their dad. He goes to Rayla, now understanding why she couldn't tell him, and admits he thinks he always knew deep down, but didn't want to admit it was true.
Back in Katolis, Viren wakes to find a fire is now lit in the room through the mirror. He grows excited when an elf with a starry cloak enters, but they soon leave.
Callum realizes now how Rayla knew Soren was lying, and admits he's not the kind of guy to be protecting the boys' feelings. Rayla wants to leave without telling Claudia and Soren, but Callum says they're still his friends, and they arrive just then. He tells them they're going to leave, as their mission is too important to give up on. Soren tries the "dad" card again, so Claudia sends him away and says she needs to give Callum something in private. In her room, she gives him the missing letter from Harrow, still unopened. Though he doesn't feel he's ready to open it yet, he thanks Claudia and she hugs him goodbye.
Ezran becomes frustrated trying to get Zym in his backpack again, and Callum enters with news that Claudia understands their mission and wants to come with Soren.
Rayla is sure they're tricking him, and if they figure it out on the journey, it'll be too late, so Callum asks how they're supposed to know it's a trap. She goes to Lujanne, who tries her half-moon spiel again, and though she says her only options are monsters and fake food, Rayla says there's something she can do. The two meed Claudia, Soren, and Ellis, where Lujanne says she'll miss everyone despite them desecrating a sacred place, and returns Ava's illusion collar. Everyone heads out after Callum and Ezran arrive, and Claudia agrees to do things to "Soren Way," with him intending to give the signal by attacking Rayla. Rayla "casually" says she's going to look for berries for the journey, and Soren follows, failing to see through Rayla's sarcasm as he attacks. Claudia magically wraps the boys in chains, scaring off Ava with Ellis, and catches Zym in a bag. In Katolis, Viren again sees the star-speckled elf, who walks toward the mirror, and he realizes they can't see him from their side. While Viren makes a discovery about the elf on the other side of the mirror, Rayla's plan to trick Claudia and Soren unfolds, aided by a former adversary.
I'm glad at least Callum now knwos about Harrow, and his reaction to the news and Rayla not telling him was what I'd hoped for.
Of course, immediately after learning, he likely felt a bit betrayed, but even then was simply more concerned with how he'd tell Ezran. The news was hard enough on him, but Ezran is even younger and so innocent, and the loss of his dad would be a terrible kind of maturation to experience. After failing himself to tell Ezran, he immediately understands why it was so hard for Rayla to give him the truth, and accepts she didn't mean to hurt him. Even in well-intentioned, the news would clearly have been painful for both of them, and of course part of her telling them would've been how she was involved. Claudia's reluctance to lie to the boys was a good show of her character, as she seems less willing than Soren to fulfill their dad's orders. Soren has had difficulty coming to terms with what his dad wants him to do, but he's already started doing so, and making excuses for his actions. Claudia, on the other hand, is conflicted with even lying to the boys, and wants desperately to get them to agree to coming back to Katolis willingly. Of course even with this, the boys are starting to have different goals and beliefs than them, and she's still planning to obey her father's dark orders. Rayla's plan to trick Claudia and Soren was my favorite aspect of this episode, making use of Lujanne's illusions to ironically show Callum the truth. The writers make the implementation of her plan a bit of a joke, with Rayla obviously trying to trick them but Soren being dumb enough to immediately believe her. The plan shows the group's intelligence as well as being a good way to prove to Callum that Claudia and Soren are lying to him. At the same time I was glad about this, it is an upsetting situation for Callum, who has now learned his dad is dead and his two friends from home are betraying him. I hope this isn't an issue that disappears quickly, but given we've seen Rayla struggle with this for a time, I would find it hard to believe the writers would ignore it. Despite Viren's scenes being so small lately, they're continuing to intrigue me, especially now that he's had success with the mirror. At first, I had thought he was somehow connecting to a room at the Moon Nexus, but it's become clear he's seeing another kind of elf we haven't been introduced to yet. The elf itself was a beautiful figure, with a space pattern on both its body and the cloak it was wearin, and a darkness around its features as a result of the cloak. Like Viren, we still don't know much about the mirror or how it works, but it seems that unlike he initially thought, the elf was able to see from their side as well. Fire seems to be the key to activating the twin mirrors, as last episode Viren knocked over soem candles in a rage, then put the flames out, and this episode he wasn't seeing anything until a fire had been lit on the other side. Along with the mystery of Viren's mirror, we now have the gang running from Claudia and Soren with the added weight of Harrow's death on Callum.
