Shadow Weaver makes a desperate plea that piques Adora's curiosity, and Entrapta suggests a new course of action to Hordak regarding Catra.
Adora awakens in time to draw her sword on Shadow Weaver, who entered in the season 2 finale, only for the sorceress to collapse.
Later, Angella leads Castaspella to see SW, though Casta is less-than-impressed with their prison, and Adora arrives with the others. Despite Adora's pleas and pointing out she knows how Shadow Weaver thinks and acts, Angella refuses to let any of the kids near her. Adora makes a poor attempt at pretending she's going back to bed, and when the others see through her "ruse," she runs at the door, but Glimmer teleports her away. In the room, Shadow Weaver wakes in an energy barrier, and recognizes Angella as Glimmer's mother. Casta declares she'll pay for her crimes committed while teaching Micah, and SW angers Angella by speaking his name and pointing out she didn't get him killed. After a coughing fit, she reveals she's got vital information to defeat the Horde, but will only speak to Adora. In the Fright Side, Catra finds herself in Shadow Weaver's cell, and is surprised when Scorpia runs up, having "sneaked into" the cell area. She explains that Hordak has called a meeting and plans to punish her, but Catra has accepted she'll never win, no matter what she does. Scorpia wants to help her friend escape, but Catra, although seemingly moved by her kindness, says caring is what got her into this mess, and calls the guards.
Bow keeps an eye on Adora as Glimmer sleeps, and though Adora lulls him into slumber as well, Glimmer stops her from escaping, doing so repeatedly.
Frustrated, she says they don't know Shadow Weaver will try to hurt her and points out that, contrary to their belief that all Horde people are just evil, she changed. Bow says they just don't want her to get hurt and asks what she needs them to do. Back in the "prison room," Castaspella tries a truth spell on SW, who simply mocks her sloppy work, and Angella calms her sister-in-law. Shadow Weaver again brings up Adora, but Angella doesn't want her to hurt the girl and demands to know what the Horde wants. SW laughs at this, saying she paid the price for escaping Hordak, and Angella realizes she's dying. Casta takes Angella outside and suggests letting Adora see the dying Shadow Weaver, but Angella wants to go to the Princess Alliance. While Glimmer teleports in with Adora, Bow distracts the queens with a magic trick. Shadow Weaver is pleased to see Adora, who stops Glimmer from a ranting threat, and demands to know why she's there, seeing through SW's claim of trusting her. SW calls her clever, but Adora reminds her of the true harsh upbringing, and soon learns she's dying, which Glimmer believes is the truth. Adora decides to heal her as She-Ra, and when Glimmer reminds her she doesn't know how, Shadow Weaver offers to teach her like she did Micah. She-Ra agrees to trust her, but on the condition that the trust be returned for once, demanding the truth as tricks weren't get her anymore.
Back in the Fright Zone, an in-pain Hordak retreats when Entrapta enters, gushing about advancements and asking where Catra is, as she's found new tech.
Hordak tells her of Catra's fall, growing angry as Entrapta shows proof that Catra helped the Horde by heaps. He finally growls that he won't spend troops on the Crimson Waste, where the new tech supposedly is, but eyes Entrapta's tracker. Meanwhile, Shadow Weaver explains the runestone in She-Ra's sword channels Etheria's energy, and she needs to let it flow through her. She-Ra becomes frustrated when her concentration does nothing, so SW warns that this will cause her power to become destructive. Surprisingly, She-Ra agrees to come closer, and steps into the portal, where SW says she must let go of her fear of losing control and feel her powers. Concentrating again, She-Ra glows and her sword floats in the air as Angella and Casta bust in. Before they can get answers, She-Ra grasps SW's face and heals her. The action reverts her to Adora, who demands answers as Glimmer stops Angella from scolding them. Shadow Weaver chuckles and admits she has nowhere else to go. Explaining what happened with Catra and Hordak, she says helping Adora is the way to take them down for revenge, and explains he's trying to use a dimensional portal to bring the remaining Horde forces to Etheria. With no reason to lie, Shadow Weaver also sheds light on Adora's past, so the girl runs to Light Hope for answers, and Hordak makes a choice regarding Catra.
Wow, this episode did a fantastic job at getting me excited for things to come, with a lot of backstory and history to send characters into new events.
Shadow Weaver is an intriguing character in this episode, with questionable motives but plenty of important information to share. Adora has been wondering about her past for a long time, and now she finally has it confirmed from multiple sources that she's not even from Etheria. I hope this will lead to some character arc for Adora, as it must be world-shattering to discover such a thing about yourself. I'm wary of Shadow Weaver of course, and feel there must be something more to the situation than she's letting on, because manipulation is her thing. Adora is certain SW won't be able to fool her anymore, but she was able to trick Catra, and now she'll just have to play the long con. She's actually in a good position because she's provided info Adora now knows to be true, which gives her credibility in their eyes. Despite how wary they might be, they won't know what to trust from SW's mouth, and she could easily slip some half-truths in, like I feel she might have. Shadow Weaver claims Hordak is trying to bring his armies to Etheria through a portal, but I find this questionable, because of his previously shown feelings. Hordak abhors Etheria, and has seemed to desperately want to leave the planet, so it makes sense his main objective would be to leave. For all I know, he could still want to conquer the planet, but simply telling everyone he wants to crush the planet gives them a reason to fight against her. If he truly wanted to just leave and Shadow Weaver knew this, it would be to her advantage because simply saying "He wants to leave" wouldn't help her cause. Although imprisoned, she's really in an amazing position because of how many princesses she's now around, along with their runestones. In the flashback episode showing Micah's past, one sorcerer explained the spell she eventually used turns one essentially into a magic parasite. With this in mind, it felt like a major risk for Adora to let SW touch her sword, as she potentially could've drained power from it. Even this, however, wouldn't have been in her best interest, because she's going for a longer manipulation and had no reason to do so. By draining the sword, she would've still had enemies all around, but if she lets Adora heal her, she can continue to play the helpful prisoner. Entrapta gets some great moments this episode as well, getting closer to uncovering Hordak's disfigurements as she uncovers tech and pleads for Catra. Entrapta has rare moments of emotion this episode, explaining how Catra is her friend and her belief that Adora abandoned her. This, combined with her desire to experiment and her lack of reactions to Hordak's rage, send him into a new course of action for Catra. Bow and Glimmer are a bit back and forth this episode, at first completely against Adora talking to SW, then willing to do whatever it took to get her there. Perhaps they realized they couldn't stop their friend, or decided she had a chance at getting info, but it felt sort of wishy washy. Something I find interesting is that this show seems to often move forward by looking back, with the characters having to solve problems by searching the past. Back when the group went to the "haunted" town, they had to realize there was First Ones tech and the "ghosts" were holograms from the past. I also like that the writers keep things vague about where Adora is from; when she learns the truth, we see her arrival on Etheria from this side of the portal. By doing this, we know the basics: Adora is off-planet. By keeping it vague, though, they allow themselves room to change things later if needed. At the moment, the writers apparently have no plan to make a He-Man show, like this plot could lead to, although Kevin Smith is apparently creating one. I'd certainly be interested if they did, however, and they've made plenty of references to the Most Powerful Man in the Universe. This episode did its job, and I'm now more excited than ever to see where the story is going to take Adora and her friends.
