Callum's delirious dream continues as Ezran chats with Claudia, and Aaravos has suggestions for Viren as guards come after him.
Claudia apologizes to Ezran for her actions before, and he explains his way with animals and how banthers are actually nice. The two walk to the ruined tower.
In Katolis, Viren threatens to destroy the mirror, but Aaravos says he won't, as he's too hungry for knowledge and power the elf can provide. Aaravos claims he'll help Viren achieve what others are preventing him from getting, suggesting they get the attention of the other kings and queens. Back at the tower, Claudia learns Ezran is upset about Harrow, and shares the story how her mom left her dad to return to her own home. The kids were forced to chooe who to follow, and after Soren chose Viren, their mom told Claudia to stay as well. She admits that losing her was the hardest thing she's experienced, she believes her mom left so she could be happy, citing Viren's intensity. Ezran shares what Callum told him about experiencing things you don't expect as you grow, and the two agree they're lucky to have their brothers. A bird flutters in and Ezran admits he can actually talk to animals. Claudia asks him to help her find milk-fruit, as it could help Soren.
Rayla tries in vain to wake Callum, who in his dream finds himself sitting on a bed with his mom urging him to breathe.
He tells her his mind is racing with a ton of thoughts, and she says we sometimes have to focus on the present and just be. As Rayla begs Callum to come back okay, the sky rune on the cube starts glowing, and Callum's mom tells him we sometimes have to let our spirit and body catch up to our minds to help out when things are complicated. She continues that this is the way to truly know something, like how she loves him, and as Rayla starts sharing her own feelings, Callum wakes, gasping. She tries to play the situation off and goes to rub his eye, but Callum interrupts that he now understands the sky arcanum. With the help of some squirrels, Ezrana nd Claudia find a milk-fruit bush, where they see some deer. Ezran recalls that deer love milk-fruit, and Claudia suspiciously agrees. She suddenly suggests he go back to help Clalum, and apologizes for scaring him. As he leaves, she turns and takes a deep breath after looking at the deer.
Callum explains to Rayla he has realized the world is like an enormous primal stone they live in, so he's surrounded by the sky, which is also in him with every breath.
He had previously believed he needed to find his own wings to experience the wind the way a bird or a ship's sails do, but has no realized he is the wind. Though Rayla is now confused, he says it's just time to test his abilities, and after focusing, his finger begins glowing and he is able to perform Aspiro. Confused when Ezran and Corvus show up, Callum is surprised to learn Ezran knows the truth. Ezran accepts his apology for not telling him and the two embrace. Back in the woods, Claudia apologizes to a deer but says she needs it because it is young and healthy. She returns to town with magic shooting from her body, and blasts Soren. To his and the doctors' surprise, his paralysis his healed, though he now feels his broken ribs. His joy is cut short when he notices Claudia hunched over breathing heavily; a gray strip has appeared in her hair, but she says it doesn't matter because he'll be okay. Rayla and the others are preparing to set out when Ezran tells Callum that since he hid when the assassins came and then when he found out about Harrow, he's decided he's not going to run anymore. To Callum's surprise, Ezran has decided to return to Katolis and become king, as he believes he can best serve the people there while they get Zym to Xadia. Though it upsets Zym, Ezran says his goodbyes and leaves with Corvus. Though he leaves, it's up to Ezran to save the others as they head into Xadia, and as Claudia and Soren return to Katolis with a consolation victory, guards close in on Viren.
Yet another series finale that has ended in a satisfactory way for me, though it's sad seeing how things had to go.
It was obvious Callum was going to learn how to do sky magic again, but that doesn't change that the way he does so is interesting, especially when he tries to do so. Comically, his attempts to explain his understanding of the sky arcanum to Rayla go about the same as her and Lujanne's attempts to explain the moon to him. Seeing him performing Aspiro without the help of a primal stone is a happy moment, especially the first time he does so this episode, with the slow build-up and the way his finger slowly starts to glow. Having Callum manage to do this after struggling for a time, especially when tempted to keep using dark magic, is a nice way to inspire perseverance. Callum has been told my multiple people that there's no way he could possibly learn magic, and he almost destroyed him trying to prove them wrong. A few episodes ago we got a cautionary tale of being careful when trying to do something, as he could've killed himself in the storm they came across. This time, however, thanks to the touch of dark magic and his own thinking, he was able to figure out the key to sky magic. One nice touch is having Callum say he was trying to find his wings to fly like a bird or a sail; this perfectly explains the part of his dream with Villads. Last episode it seemed that this simply meant the fact he was trying to experience wind, and on a ship he could the way he thought was right. In a strange way, his mind was actually telling him already what he would realize later: he was trying to find his own way to fly like Berto or the sail, but he is like them already, which is why he horrifically became the sail before. His mom's message to him was also in a way something that I've been told before: he was thinking too hard to figure out the trick to magic. Callum is an intelligent kid, but he gets too caught up in his mind sometimes, and didn't realize he needed to consider other aspects of his body. When he's doing this, we get a moment with Rayla where it seems she's about to say she loves him. I don't feel like she meant this romantically, but it's great to learn she's starting to see the boys as family. Ezran has to go grow up a lot in this episode, though he's the perfect kid to do so, because he's surprisingly mature for his age. Even if he had the banther on his side, approaching Claudia at all after what she's done was a bold move, but he's willing to talk to her still as friends. In a short time, he's already understanding the words Callum got from Harrow about growing up, and shares them with Claudia. His decision to return to Katolis is another bold one because of Viren's actions, but this is a moment of dramatic irony, as Ezran doesn't know what we do. It's another mature action from him as well, as he realizes that although he could help Rayla and his brother transport Zym, it's probably better that he return to Katolis. Thinking about it now, it could be an incredible move, as for one thing, he can dispel all the things Viren claimed, especially that he and Callum are dead, of course. But more than this, he can potentially change the opinions of the people about elves, which will be useful because of what Viren does at the end of this episode. For weeks, Ezran has been travelling with an elf, and she never brought him harm and actually saved him, becoming one of his best friends in the process, which is something the people will have to think about. Whereas a human who has been leading them for a while was willing to let the boys die, an elf befriended and repeatedly saved them. I'm interested to see what happens here, but also with Viren himself, now that the guards have closed in on him. Viren has Aaravos on his side, but the elf is still trapped on the other side of a mirror, and there's no way the people of Katolis will listen to him anymore. At the same time, he's experiencing some powerful magic and has an apparently ancient and strong elf on his side, so he's not out yet. Then there's Claudia and Soren, which again brought bittersweet feelings because of the former being able to save her brother. I was happy to see Soren able to walk again, though I have to wonder if this will affect the growth he experienced previously, and the way Claudia went about it is appalling. We don't see her do anything to the deer she approaches, but considering what we've seen of dark magic before, she obviously had to kill it. This is made more disgusting by the fact she manipulated Ezran to do this, by suggesting the milk fruit was what she needed. In Ezran's mind, he was simply helping her get the fruit, and that would help Soren, but in reality she killed an animal, which he has a special connection with. She apologizes for scaring the boy before, but it's disgusting how she continues to act like nothing more than a caring friend while continuing to deceive the boys. Her magic this episode is the first time we really see her change much; we've seen Viren repeatedly take on a ghastly appearance after using dark magic, but for Claudia we usually just see her eyes go dark. This time around, her hair was permanently left with a streak of gray, which I hope is a sign of the magic we continue to see develop over time. With season two done with, I'm just excited to see what happens next as Callum and Rayla head into Xadia, and I read recently that there are sagas to the story that will follow different characters from the world, which is an intriguing idea.
