Ghost Face has joined the server to stalk some survivors, and people are debating whether he's good as he is, or if his killing could use some work.
This Ghost Face doesn't follow the Scream movies; rather he is original character Danny "Jed Olsen" Johnson, a former freelance reporter.
Due to his charming nature and the need for a position to be filled, he easily joined the Roseville Gazette with the staff doing little research on him. A few months after he started, the police were baffled as a murder spree began, with seemingly random victims of all ages that the killer obviously knew to some degree. No DNA evidence could be found, and though the crimes had passion fury, the killer was known to stalk his victims, with some reporting it shortly before their deaths. After spending weeks following and photographing his victims, the killer would quietly break into their homes. Everyone at the paper got involved, and Olsen specifically went to speak with victims' families and get info from police, which only helped him with his "work." He eventually revealed footage of the killer, with their ghostly mask, entering a house, and he seemed pleased when his following article spooked people. He suddenly disappeared weeks later, leaving a note saying he hoped people enjoyed the stories he brought to life, and that he wasn't done. Olsen, who is reading this story about himself, happily rips out the article, having moved on when the police search pointed to him. In his humid room, Olsen pins the article up next to numerous others and crime photos, wondering when he last ate. As he admires his work, a sudden chill overtakes the room as it transforms into the Entity's realm, and Olsen smiles.
This Ghost Face brings an updated version of the Scream look, wearing more than just a simple cloak and having cloth tendrils that float behind him.
The iconic mask is still the same, and his weapon is of course a hunting knife. There are alternate costumes that make him stand out more, like one where he's a devil. To go along with his creepy appearance, the Ghost, like the Shape, aka Michael Myers, stalks his victims to inflict the insta-down "exposed" status effect. Much like how the Cannibal's (Leatherface) chainsaw differs from the Hillbilly's, the Ghost's stalking works in a new way. Myers' stalking leaves him only able to move slowly, and the stalk is something that applies to himself. The Ghost's allows crouching and leaning, and applies to victims. When Myers stalks, a meter around a picture of his face fills until he reaches tier two, which becomes permanent, and then he can go further to tier 3, which allows insta-downs but runs out. Each survivor can only be stalked a certain amount. For the Ghost, each survivor gets a meter instead of him, and once it's filled, he has a limited time to insta-down them. Their meter can be filled repeatedly, and if he stalks them for a time but leaves, the meter stays where he left it. When using his ability, Night Shroud, the Ghost has no terror radius, but hitting a survivor before filling their stalk meter depletes it, and if survivors look at him for long enough, they can deplete it. The Ghost can lean around corners while using his power, filling the meter faster, and can crouch; doing so removes his red stain, similar to the Pig,
The first of Ghost Face's three perks is "I'm All Ears," which allows him to see the aura of any survivor close enough who performs a rushed action for six seconds.
This ability can trigger every 60 seconds, and seems best for those who aren't the best at "mind gaming" during chases. With the help of this perk, you can see through walls if a survivor jumps through a window or vaults a pallet, which can help you decide which path you should take. Once you're a little more experienced, this perk will likely become useless to you, but I'd say that's why it's just the first of his teachables. After this is "Thrilling Tremors," which for a limited time locks off any generator not being worked on when Ghost Face picks up a survivor, appearing with white auras. This one reminded me of Legion's ability to see when more than one person is on a generator, and Plague's perk to lock off gens at the start of a match. A big issue is obviously that while you're chasing someone, other survivors are on gens, but now once you hook the person you chase, you know for sure which gens have survivors on them, as they won't be glowing white. This shaves off time from you having to look for survivors, a useful counter to long chases, and at times you might cut survivors off as they approach gens. This can actually be effective throughout the match, as well; early on you can find the gens people have starting and/or lock them from ones they're near, while later you can potentially stop them from completing the final gen they need. Ghost Face's final perk is "Furtive Chase," where after you hook your obsession, you gain a token, max three, with each decreasing your terror radius by four meters. When the survivor is saved, the person who saved them becomes the obsession, but if the obsession is killed or sacrificed, you lose all your tokens. This can of course be useful in that if you have no terror radius, you can more easily sneak up on survivors and get some stalking done. This is definitely a perk that can easily be rendered useless, as the obsession dying takes away your ability, but that situation isn't too bad, as it means a survivor is gone. The only counter survivors really have to this is to eventually let the obsession die, which will leave them one person down. I feel like this could be useful with Myers, especially when put with Scratched Mirror, which lets him see through walls but keeps him in in tier one, where his terror radius is minimal and people often reduce with perks to sneak up on survivors. You could counter the token loss after obsession death with Dying Light, which slows survivor progression once the obsession is dead, but that's an ability you was to get quickly, and the rotating obsession would make this difficult.
I'm really excited about the place Ghost Face is in right now, though at the moment there is controversy as the devs have altered him a bit since the PTB.
He was given some changes that many immediately decried as hard nerfs, but when I read through the changes, they didn't seem terrible. Along with a few add-ons being slightly reduced, a few were given slightly longer duration, pallet stuns now knock Ghost Face out of stealth, marked survivors can't be stalked, and survivors have a wider detection area to see the killer. Now when Ghost Face first came out, he was just a mess, due to the survivors just needing to aim their camera at him to instantly drain his ability. After some fixes, however, he was made more viable, and these changes don't really seem like a big deal to me like some are treating them. Getting knocked out of stealth from pallets I would imagine isn't a big deal, because if you're getting hit that way, the survivor is aware you're chasing them. The detection change is probably what people hate the most, but the survivors need a way to counter his ability, and it's not like they can again break him out in a second. Ghost Face is labeled as a "hard" killer, so I've just been rolling my eyes seeing people say they're having a difficult time doing well with him at this point. If he's labeled as hard, you have to expect he'll take time to get used to, and it's only been a few days since he came out; no one should be a master yet. I like his ability, which as many have joked, feels like an amalgamation of Myers and the Pig, feeling different from each in a good way. It'll take time for people to figure out how to properly use this ability differently than Myers, the OG stalker, but I feel like it'll be worth it. This isn't a case like we saw with Legion, who many saw as similar to the idea of Ghost Face and was found by people on both sides of the survivor/killer debate to be no fun. His ability can be scary if he manages to expose you, and then he need only chase you down and give you a single smack before you're put on a hook. The leaning for his ability seemed silly to me at first, but I figure now it'd be creepy to turn your camera and suddenly see, and the silliness goes well with Ghost Face. Even his mori has a sick goofiness to it, as after carving the survivor up like a ham, he pulls out a camera to take a picture with their corpse. I was actually one person who didn't see the strong desire from many to get Ghost Face in the game, but now I'm actually liking what they've done with him. For now there's a lot of hatred due to his recent "nerf," but I hope this will fade over time as we get to figure out how Ghost Face works best.
