Donald picks a snowy fight with his nephews, and when the boys retaliate and make a fool of him, their uncle declares war.
Donald wakes to find a winter wonderland outside, but it's too cold to go out as he is, as a single gust of wind freezes his beak when he pokes his head out.
After flicking the snow off his beak, Donald fetches his massive overcoat and heads outside with a sled, quacking "Jingle Bells" as he goes. Once he climbs a snowy hill, he notices his nephews below building a snowman and singing "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow." Ever the mean uncle, Donald immediately launches down the hill and straight through the snowman and the boys, who each end up with a piece of the snowman's body on their own. Noticing his cackling uncle nearby, Huey whispers a plan to Dewey, whose head is covered by the snowman's, and Louie listens from the other side, grinning evilly. The boys build a new, goofy looking snowman on a boulder, shouting that it's Donald and mocking their uncle. Annoyed, Donald rushes downhill again, slamming into the rock so hard all the fur falls off his coat.
Donald sees the boys laughing and gives chase, but they escape him by running to their snow fort, which has a moat and a mattress-door.
When it closes, Donald bounces off the mattress and skips across the frozen lake, slamming into a frozen tree. Snow and ice then fall from the tree, making Donald look like a white rhino in a cage, which he angrily leaps out of as the boys sing "London Bridge is Falling Down." Donald declares that he'll "fix them," and builds a snow battleship out in the water, but the boys are less than impressed. He then proves they have something to worry about when he manages to pelt them with snowballs that leave them as frozen bowling pins, and bowls them over. Though this and another move catch the boys off guard, they're not willing to surrender yet.
This short was paired with the episode from my previous post on a Disney tape I used to watch as a kid, and it gives me plenty of laughs as well.
Whereas Mickey has always been a more serious, kind character, Donald is wacky and absurd with intense anger. Right at the start we get the kind of silly comedy classic cartoons were known for, as just looking outside causes Donald's beak to turn blue and have snow on top of it. He has an incredibly large coat that mostly serves to make Donald look silly in this episode, and when it's ruined thanks to running into the rock, this still works, just in a different way, since it and Donald now look so sad. He repeatedly hits the boys with the ridiculous kind of logic you would expect from a cartoon, as slamming into their snowman leaves its arms, legs, and head on them, and smacking them with snowballs later leaves them as bowling pins. This moment also has a strange showing of Donald's bowling prowess, as he bowls with snow across the gap between their base and his ship. Like the last one having a good version of classic humor with Chip and Dale easily tormenting Pluto, this special has another kind as the boys and Donald trade blows pretty equally for most of the episode. Donald starts it all, of course, by destroying their snowman, and they are easily able to get back at him with their followup creation. They're able to escape and Donald is left cage, but then everyone is left going back and forth at their own battle posts. As one could expect of a Donald Duck cartoon, there are lots of rather unintelligible moments due to his and his nephews' strange voices. There are actually some moments where I'm not sure what was said, but overall it's not difficult to discern what is going on, and the true importance is with what's happening, rather than what's being said. Unlike the previous episode and other specials I've talked about, this episode isn't focused on Christmas or the Christmas spirit. It's still a snowy episode, however, which gives it the right kind of feeling, and it's obviously around Christmas because Donald even sings "Jingle Bells." This makes it more interesting than some specials, in a way, as rather than looking specifically at Christmas, the focus is on events surrounding the holiday. Just like the last episode, this is a good example of fun, simple Disney comedy that is enjoyable for fans of all ages.
